Seattle and SJ swap

Created by: Jacketsman61
Team: 2024-25 Columbus Blue Jackets
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 20, 2024
Published: Feb. 20, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
What do you think? The Seattle trade makes a lot of sense. The Jackets could use C depth and Seattle could use a high end winger. Both have struggled and could use a change of scenery.

Sharks fans are going to (arguably rightfully) say that's not enough for Ferraro. I don't think he's the guy that makes sense for Columbus, we just need a really solid veteran 3LD and let Mateychuk pair with Severson on the 2nd pair next year.

I also don't think it makes sense to swap KJ for Wright. We've got plenty of center depth, and we have a top-end center in Fantilli in all likelihood. One of Jenner, Sillinger, or Voronkov should step in to be a good 2C, one will be a devastatingly good 3C (Jenner the goal scorer, Sillinger the defensive shutdown guy, or Voronkov the overall beast), and all 3 of those would be wasted on the 4th line. I think Wright is more of what we have: top-6 potential C's that are likely to land in the middle-6.

Johnson, on the other hand, has a good shot at being THE winger, the guy with the skill and creativity to actually drive play and score a bunch of points. The guy Gaudreau should be. Every other winger we have isn't inspiring as a 1st-liner, Marchenko Chinakhov, Laine, and Gaudreau are all great 2nd-liners and are a luxury on the 3rd line. If one of those can break out (or bounce back) and Johnson can keep developing, we should be set in the system at wing too.

The Provorov deal I'm totally fine with, I just don't think Colorado is the team to pay that this season.

COL needs a C and back up goalie why are they trading prime assets for a dman?

Boqvist isn’t on the same level as Ferraro, both about the same age Boqvist has more offensive potential and Ferraro is more a stay home D guy. The biggest difference though has to be Ferraro is having a good season and Boqvist is having his worst, that combined with the NJD pick being a potential 1st if NJD make the ECF would make this a horrible deal.

That makes zero sense for the avs.
And also, Shane Wright will not accept that kind of trade for him. He barely accept the fact that he was picked 4th overall

Sharks pass, basically no upside. even if you take the 2nd out, a late first not worth a ton and Boquist is eh. Ferraro is within age bracket for sharks rebuild and a decent 2 pairing guy when (currently playing top pairing and he isn't one). If you include Jirieck then we can talk more.

I'm as hyped as anyone about Mateychuk's future, but I think expecting him to play 2nd pair next year is a mistake. He hasn't earned an NHL spot yet. I really see Provorov staying there at least until the 2025 deadline.

I don't dislike that idea, and honestly we might get more for Provorov next deadline than at anytime this season or offseason. Mateychuk looked good in the preseason, and arguably deserved a shot on the roster more than Jiricek, who's been playing in the top-4 at points this season. I don't think he'll have too much trouble adjusting, and his play style isn't really a fit for the 3rd pair, but he'd definitely need to earn that spot in the preseason/early next season.

The key though is that it doesn't make sense for CBJ to trade significant futures for a different 2LD until 1) we've properly evaluated Mateychuk, and 2) Provorov no longer fills that role.
