Doesn't make any sense.
A non-playoff team isn't trading for a pending UFA. They can wait and sign him after the season, especially if it means taking on an unwanted defense contract in the process.

I agree. The only reason any non-playoff team would possibly do this would be if they identified that player as someone they wanted to target in free agency and it was discovered that the Penguins are allowing GM's to talk to Jake about an extension prior to the trade. I have not heard that Dubas has allowed that to occur.

I saw this rumor yesterday and I still can't figure out how this makes even the slightest bit of sense for MTL. Am I just missing something?

This is awful for Montreal. Beyond having a rebuilding team acquire a rental, Montreal's trading their one good local prospect/young player and taking a D on an awful contract that they don't have clear roster spot for. Is this a real rumour or just something somebody made up?
