This is definitely a trade
I say devils win
EP>=Hughes
Demko>>>>>>>

I give the edge to Jersey they get the better 2 players and 1st

L. Hughes is going to be a good top 4 d-man but I still think Devils win

Agreed. Top 5 centre in the league and top 5 goalie going Devils way.

This is interesting, not obvious that Devils win trade so easily. Petey & J Hughes really close - I give slight nod to Petey but he’s RFA looking for $11-1 & J Hughes locked up at bargain $8M. Slight edge to Canucks. Demko is clear win for Devils. Rather have young player (former 1st rounder, early pick) than late 1st round pick, edge to Canucks. Really close but it might just be that Demko is so good and so young, Devils win.

Pettersson is looking at 12.5 or so.

4.5 mill AAV gap for 2 equal players with Jack also being younger and still developing is massive.

That’s 27 million dollars over the life of jacks contract. Demko at 5 million would have to be a 14 million dollar goalie just to make up that gap, or if this is an offseason deal an 18.5 million dollar goalie.

Demko+Pettersson for Jack, MAYBE.

Luke for a singular 2025 1st, not a chance

Jack Hughes is going to make 5 million dollars a year less than Pettersson and is 2 years younger. Theres at minimum a 25 million dollar gap that Vancouver has to make up there. Demko would maybe cover it.

Take out Luke, vitek, and retain 50% on Demko

Valuations:

Jack: 16 million
Pettersson: 16 million
Demko: 10 million

Jack: 48 million in surplus value
Pettersson (on 12.5x8 extension): 28 mill in surplus value
Demko (at 2.5x2): 15

48 vs 43.

I agree on value of Jack Hughes contract vs Pettersson’s new deal; that’s why I mentioned it 😕. But Demko would be massive upgrade for Devils; if difference between Hughes and Pettersson contract is $4.5M, Devils still couldn’t find an equivalent goalie to Demko at $9.5M. You could use the money elsewhere of course but i would personally still take Pettersson at $12.5M + Demko at $5M over jack Hughes at $8.0M . But to each his own 🤷🏻

Both Sorokin and Hellebuyuck as UFAs just got contracts at 8.25 and 8.5 million.

Demko only has 2 years left on his contract in the offseason. If you value him at 10 mill like I do that's 5 mill in surplus value each year and with goalie volatility there is certainly no guarantee he maintains this current level of play. He's never done it in any other year.

He was lights out in 2022, down year last year (injuries I think) and has been lights out this year. He’s a top 5 goalie imo but I get the point on positional volatility. And he will demand much more as FA in 3 years but cap will be significantly higher by then too so tough call. Good point on Hellybuck & Sororkin but counter is they didn’t sign with Devils so you still (are one of many teams that) need a franchise goalie

Swayman could hit the market at like a 6.5x8 extension if we paid a hefty price in draft capital. Saros, Shesterkin hit UFA in 2 years. Also again money could just be used elsewhere. For example Ullmark/Jarry at 5 mill or so and then use the other 5 mill in savings elsewhere on the roster.

I'd also rather have Jack going forward than Pettersson. I frankly think he's better right now and is still only 22.
