Description
To be clear, this is from a Sharks fan's perspective.
Trades
COL
  1. Kähkönen, Kaapo
  2. Sturm, Nico
  3. 2024 4th round pick (VGK)
Additional Details:
Potentially willing to retain on Kahkonen and make minor tweaks to the picks. Maybe SJ's 2025 3rd instead of Vegas' 2024 4th or add in an additional pick (SJ or WPG's 2025 4th)
SJS
  1. Johansen, Ryan
  2. 2024 1st round pick (COL)
Additional Details:
If the pick needs to be pushed back a year or 2 that'd be fine. Pick can be top 16 protected or whatever with it going back a year if it falls in the top 16.

How far off is it? Most comments I've seen have suggested it's around a 2nd to dump RyJo's contract. Here you're getting rid of that, getting a good 4C who can step up and fill a 3C during injuries, kills penalties, and has the 5th best faceoff percentage in the league, though he's probably a little overpaid, getting a goalie who, aside from the last 2 games, has been putting up good numbers behind a terrible defense corpse* and could be a good backup that can cover some games so Georgiev isn't stuck playing a billion games down the stretch, and you're getting a 3rd or a 4th in exchange for a late 1st.

*typo intentional due to just how bad the defense corps is

Sturm wasn't very good for the Avs, is overpaid and the Avs can't afford a 4C at that price going forward. Just don't see the Avs having any interest in him. I'm also one of the ppl who believes it won't cost as much as some believe to move RyJo. KK will be a rental only for the Avs as they can't afford to re-sign him. Rather stand pat with RyJo than make this move. There's no money after to pay for a 2C which is the most important position of need for the Avs. Just a bad idea for them.

Rylo is a cap dump with an extra year, will cost a 2nd or 3rd depending on if they find a good deal. COL isn't winning this year with Rylo at 2C....maybe Landeskog comes back at takes the 2C in the playoffs, but you are still royally F'ed next year. Rylo will have to get dumped and one of the Dmen will have to get traded.

It's already more or less a foregone conclusion Manson will be traded; not that he's been bad but they can't afford a $4.5M 3rd pair D. His contract was basically written for him to be traded this offseason for cap relief but he should bring back something decent. However that doesn't mean the Avs are going to pay a 1st to dump Joey; there are plenty of fans and media folks that would be okay with it but the Avs FO doesn't do stuff like that. They don't have a lot of options at 2C but there are options. My guess is they'll get Wennberg; they can afford to add him without dumping Joey if Seattle will retain half. Not sexy in the least but would be better than Joey in every way except at the dot.

How about Granlund as a 2C option?

Doubt the Avs see him as a solution; his skating isn't great and he wouldn't get much PP time. The Avs are definitely in tight situation with the 2C spot but they aren't going to throw good money after bad.

This isn't a 1st to dump Johansen, it's roughly a 2nd depending exactly where the 1st is. All of the following is moot if you don't think they should dump him or don't think it's worth a 2nd to do so.

Pick 29 (losing in the WCF while having fewer points than the team that loses in the ECF) is worth 3.0 GSVA per The Athletic's draft pick value chart. Vegas' 4th is probably worth 0.3 GSVA (it could reach 0.5 if they end up falling to 5th from the bottom of the standings). A second is worth anywhere from 1.1 to 2.6 GSVA, likely towards the lower end of that if it's the Avs' pick since they'll be later. If it's pick 29 you're looking at 2.7 - 1.1ish = 1.6 which would be pick 49 or 50. which is what I'm roughly setting as Sturm + Kahkonen, potentially with retention on Kahkonen and I'm willing to adjust a bit on the picks.

If instead of Vegas' 4th we're using the Sharks' 2025 3rd, the pick will likely be in the top 5 of the 3rd round which would be 0.9-1.0 GSVA if it were this year. Since it's a year later it loses some value, call it around 0.6 and now we're only valuing the Avs' pick at 2.4-1.1ish = 1.3 which would be pick 56 or 57.

If the Avs win the cup the 1st goes to number 32 which is 2.7 GSVA (or 0.3 less than pick 29) which brings down the value to 1.0ish which would be an early 3rd (65-68).

If the Avs are eliminated before the WCF they'd have somewhere between 17 and 28, most likely in the range of 25 which is 3.4 bringing the value up to 1.7 which is pick 46-48, or a mid 2nd.
