The Tanner Jeannot Trade

Created by: bolts03
Team: 2023-24 Tampa Bay Lightning
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 6, 2024
Published: Mar. 6, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Just one year out and this trade may be the one that sinks the hopes of a Tampa dynasty. This trade was bad from the moment it was announced. But as I think most Tampa fans did we said screw it who needs those picks this is our window those picks don’t matter. Now a year later not having a first round pick for the next two drafts was probably a big reason for why we didn’t land Hanifin. In five years when the whole draft class that Nashville was able to select through this trade has developed this trade may look so so much worse. I truly believe this trade has the chance to go down as one of the worst in the salary cap era.

As for the player, Jeannot is just fine and has a role on the team but for what was given up and his inability to stay healthy it just hurts so much.

JBB hit a home run with Hagel but other than that he has appeared out of his league with trades and contracts given out to declining assets.

(If he gets Chychrun I take it back)

I really hope we dont get chychrun but as for the jeannot trade I think it could go down as the worst trade of the cap era at the moment of the trade. Some trades have aged worse like the Huberdeau- Tkachuk deal or the Dubois trade but those trades were seen as closer when the trade was made. The second the Jeannot trade was announced everyone knew it was terrible. Some trades have aged really well for JBB but overall I can't think of a single trade that he didn't overpay at the time of the trade

Who do they sell? They have no assets worth anything that aren’t part of the long term plan.

Spot on. At some point we have to start asking if he is the answer at GM moving forward. I don’t think we are there yet but another year or so of this might be it for him.

Problem is that outside of those guys nobody is worth more than a 6th round pick. And no they aren’t trading Stamkos or Hedman.

Stamkos would just block any trade with his full NMC. Hedman has plenty of game left in him on a good deal. Trading him doesn’t help Tampa.

Neither of them are getting resigned and stamkos is next to useless so might as well try to trade

Personally I would be okay with being bad for a year or two in order for both of them to retire as Bolts. They given so much to this franchise I hope they never wear another jersey. 2026 could be a lottery pick at that point and we start the journey over again.

Best to put Boltsfan71 on ignore if you don't want your thread to quickly get derailed with baseless claims and very outlandish positions based on zero knowledge and/or evidence.

I'd do the trade from Tampa's view, but I have doubts that's enough for retention given the extra year he has on his deal.

Kinda sounding like you aren’t a real “bolts fan” lol. Being as great as the Lighting have been this past decade is something we will likely never see again. It is what it is. Cherish the good times and honor two of the greatest players in not on Lightning but NHL history.

Would you trade Erik Cernak for Lassi Thomson, Jacob Bernard-Docker, and a 2026 1st?

That would be a good question if the comparison was remotely close. Cernak is better, plays the more valuable position, and is locked up long term at a nice price.
He is locked in 6 years longer than Chychrun and every asset you named for Ottawa with the exception of the pick isn't close to being as good. So, to answer your question, no, ,but your question is an utterly moronic comparison..
Jack Thompson is a MUCH BETTER prospect than Lassi Thomson, Nick Perbix is Much better than JBD and the picks a wash. Assinine comparison.
