Penguins at the Draft

Created by: mynameisliang_
Team: 2024-25 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 10, 2024
Published: Mar. 10, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Had a Penguins thread about Dubas served to me in my Reddit Algorithm, so I wanted to continue some of my thoughts here.

This all ends with the Pens emptying their cupboard to improve their overall roster, and start the year with cap space to accrue towards the deadline if they want to continue to make additions and swing for it one last time. Crosby needs to extend July 1 for this to make sense, but this is them going for it for a last dance with Crosby/Malkin/Letang, and whether they win the cup or miss the playoffs, they are going hard rebuild in 2025-26.

Trades
1.
PIT
  1. Chychrun, Jakob
  2. 2024 1st round pick (OTT)
Additional Details:
The condition on the Pens' 2024 1st in the deal to SJ is that if the 2024 1st is top-10, the pick slides to 2025. The Senators would be acquiring the Pens' 2024 pick which means they're moving back from #4-#5 to #8-#9, and sending Chychrun to get Karlsson at $7m.
OTT
  1. Karlsson, Erik ($3,000,000 retained)
  2. 2025 1st round pick (PIT)
Additional Details:
$3m/year in retention is a lot of retention, but I think it's worth it. By bringing back Chychrun, you get a player who is not quite as good as karlsson, but you're clearing $3m in cap space.
2.
CGY
  1. Pickering, Owen
  2. Yager, Brayden [Reserve List]
  3. 2024 4th round pick (PIT)
3.
PIT
  1. Gustafsson, David [RFA Rights]
  2. Iafallo, Alex ($2,000,000 retained)
  3. Perfetti, Cole [RFA Rights]
  4. 2025 3rd round pick (WPG)
Additional Details:
Winnipeg needs Cap space to re-sign Monahan and they need assets to try to find an RHD somewhere. We have Lambert and Mcgroarty who will be promoted to fill the Iafallo/Perfetti slots in our roster, so to me it make sense to move these guys and get a bunch of draft picks, restock the cupboard then try to flip them for an RHD to replace Demelo who I think will have priced himself out of an extension in Winnipeg.
WPG
  1. 2024 1st round pick (OTT)
  2. 2024 2nd round pick (PIT)
  3. 2024 2nd round pick (PHI)
Additional Details:
With this trade and the previous one, the Penguins are emptying the cupboard to go for it one last time with Crosby/Malkin/Letang. By acquiring Perfetti, they get a little younger as well.

I assume you're a jets fan from your profile picture. I'll issue this comment from my house in St. Vital.

I don't think the Jets *need* Perfetti. We have Lambert and Mcgroarty who will graduate next season, and we have Barlow on the way, with Lucius waiting in the wings if he can ever stay healthy. What the Jets *do* need is cap space. We want to re-sign Monahan, and we *should* be trying to extend Demelo as well, but I don't know if that will be possible. Iafallo is a fine player, but he's not worth his $4m cap hit, and we need the roster spot for the aforementioned rookies. Gustafsson doesnt factor into our long-term plans. We can't afford to Re-sign Monahan and Demelo *and* extend Perfetti long-term. We also need to get Nikolaj Ehlers another contract on July 1 as well. I think that by converting Perfetti into a high draft pick and a couple of second rounders, we restock the cupboard of draft picks and are able to either extend Demelo or try to trade for a difference maker at RD using the acquired picks.

if the roster looks like this next year, I would be more than okay with it.

Connor-Scheifele-Vilardi
Ehlers-Monahan-Mcgroarty
Niederreiter-Lowry-Appleton
Barron-Lambert-Namestnikov
Kupari

Morrissey-???
Heinola-Pionk
Samberg-Schmidt

Jets use the assets returned in this trade to fill the ???. Either you flip some 2nd round picks to bring back a servicable d-man or you take the high 1st and other assets and bring back someone crazy from a team that is looking at a rebuild.

Wouldn't trade Chych for EK straight up, let alone dropping in the draft to do so

I'm not opposed to trading Perfetti at all, but only if the return is right. Like you said, it would need to be a 3-way trade for a 1RD/2RD with term. I like Iafallo, but I also understand that his contract makes him difficult to fit into the roster next year. I'm not willing to retain on Iafallo, he's worth more to the Jets at $4M than a free roster spot at $2M.

There's also the Winnipeg factor and the human factor to consider. Both of these guys like playing here, which can't be said for anyone the Jets acquire in return for them. The human factor complicates things too. Trading Perfetti would likely piss off Samberg, and trading Iafallo (assuming AI doesn't want to be traded) would piss off Vilardi. Both Samberg and Vilardi fit into the long-term plans for the Jets, and trading their friends might make them think twice about staying in Winnipeg long-term.

The good news is that Perfetti has kinda played himself out of signing an 8-year deal this summer, so the Jets can give him a bridge deal to keep his AAV low for a couple more years. Personally, I think Iafallo is the cap casualty this summer, Monahan getting re-signed is a 50/50. DeMelo is basically guaranteed to re-sign in Winnipeg. Heinola takes Dillon's spot like you said, and only one of Lambert/McGroarty makes the jump to the NHL. Either Perfetti re-signs and Kupari is the 13th FWD, or Perfetti is used to acquire that 1RD and the D-pairings look like:

JMo - New Guy
Heinola - DeMelo
Samberg - Pionk
Schmidt

Even if EK is now too "old" for the Sens rebuild and not really the type they'd need, I was at least interested in a Chychrun - Karlsson (3 M$ retained) swap...

until I saw the pick swap LOL
