Description
Need to hire a good, veteran coach, definetley some decent options out there, wouldn't be opposed to finding a new goalie coach either he clearly does not do a good job. I think daws and/or schmid are the devs goalies of the future but they r still very young and need more time to develop and get a lot of ahl work. Jake allen is not the guy, he sucks, terrible move, he is not an upgrade or a comptent starter especially if you want to have a contending team. I would have schmid be the backup nbecause he was solid in a limited role in 2022-2023 and let daws be a workhorse in the minors to develop. Now as for a goalie in the offseason. They could go all in on a big goalie like juse sarros but i thinkit would cost a lot, get a golie who can be good but is repaceable when daws is ready, this also avoids giving up everything for saros. Holtz needs to take toffolis place, maybe if management and coaches will actually play him that willl happen. Defense is fine just not played well due to bad coaching and systems. could maybe use a solid middle 6 forawrd and maybe some forward depth in the event of injuries . I like the idea of elvis merlinkins because he has been good in the past, he is still young and has the potential to be good he has just had very ****ty defense and he wouldn't cost everything since it is known he wants out and his recent stats aren't as good. For this thread I will be getting merzlinkins but i do not believ that is the only solution like i said saros is possible or just getting someone else so daws can cook for a year or so. he just needs more games.
idk casey's timeline but after two years of ncaa and him doing really well i would thik they will look to sign him, sprong is underrated, he is a solid scoring forward with a great shot and quick skating, look at his production in seattle and detroit past two years and he only averaged 11-12 minutes a game, i think he is a solid fit for this devils team. doesn't have to be him but think he is a good fit, him and mercer could be switched between 2 and 3 LW could even see him playing with hughes if they need to switch stuff around cuz he is fast and got a great shot

I say this as a Jackets fan: that's an overpay for Elvis.

Keep Stillman and Hatakka, Columbus still says yes. Keep the 4th, too. You could probably keep the conditional 2nd and send us just the 4th and Allen instead. Elvis is an average goaltender, he should rebound in a new system but he's not going to be Saros. His contract makes him a slightly positive asset at best.

If you're not having us retain, Allen and a pick is totally fine for a guy who's possibly 3rd on our surprisingly good goalie depth chart now. The cap space and roster flexibility alone makes it worth it in the long run.

I’d honestly expect Elvis to be a cap dump at 5.4 mill AAV. Cant see a scenario where he returns +ve value without retentuon

You're missing the other critical component of what makes someone a cap dump, though. Columbus doesn't need the cap space. They are not under any financial pressure to move him. It's like Andrew Peeke, to be honest. Every other fanbase here was screaming at us that he was a cap dump we'd have to pay to move even with retention and then... we moved him with no retention for a third and a meaningless AHL player. Elvis a perfectly serviceable average goalie, yes overpaid for that but not egregiously so. A bit of a clubhouse cancer? Almost certainly. But he is not a cap dump.

elvis has been pretty bad, wants out, has an expensive contract, for that price almost any other option would be better

I think that was mostly just Toronto fans.

I certainly dont think CBJ will pay to dump him full price. No need for them to do that. I think retention to make him a desirable asset is more likely., whatever that looks like to a team. I don’t think a team would pay for 5.4 Elvis, and I don’t think CBJ would pay to dump 5.4 Elvis.

I think the new GM will be perfectly happy to move on from Elvis for nothing more than the pleasure of his absence from the roster.

I could see a world where Columbus retains ~$1M to make him a more desirable asset if that's the hangup for an acquiring team, but historically CBJ 1) doesn't retain salary/pay players not currently playing for the team (read: "has cheap ownership") and 2) somehow strong-arms teams to get what they want in trades, it's uncanny. We'll have all 3 retention slots available this offseason, though, so I could see if it's a situation where we either have to pay assets to move Elvis or we actually get assets but retain in order to move him, so we retain slightly.

But it does boil down to: if you want our starting goalie, you probably have to take the whole deal. Otherwise we're in no rush to move said starting goalie.
