Now to Draft and into Summer

Team: 2024-25 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 14, 2024
Published: Mar. 14, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Has this season moves forward,

I provide Hutson a contract as soon as the NCAA season is over, put him in Laval for the series if they make it; just like Caufield, burns that 1st year which is not unheard of for talented prospects. I do the same with Reinbacher, as soon as the season is done I fly him in for Laval. I would also start both of them in Laval for next year in order to get their legs going.

I provide Dvorak with more much needed rest.. LTIR

I go for Marchessault big contract for 3 years; but you get the Power Forward you need for that first or second line, interchangeable with Slaf of course.

I push to Vegas for Roy and see if they are willing to give him u in order to get an extra 3M$ on their cap since they'll need it;

Trades
1.
MTL
  1. 2024 5th round pick (ARI)
Additional Details:
PIcked ARZ but would trade for anything at all. I selected a 5th here to mostly indicate his max return on a deal.
ARI
  1. Armia, Joel ($1,700,000 retained)
2.
MTL
  1. 2024 1st round pick (COL)
Additional Details:
Avs get a 4th line center under 2M$ and Barron back who had no space before but they'll need Defensemen who cost less then 2M/ next year. They also get 2X 3rd round picks in order to get a few more prospects in. I think Habs could provide the PITTS 2nd in 2025, but the two thirds would be more than enough I think.
COL
  1. Barron, Justin
  2. Evans, Jake
  3. 2024 3rd round pick (MIN)
  4. 2025 3rd round pick (VAN)
Additional Details:
Habs gets the AVS 1st in 2024, but mind you that it's a very late pick and they need players who can play now. Evans and Barron do fit the bill.
3.
MTL
  1. 2024 2nd round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
Kovacevic is a good player still in the + and on the Habs team. Young player with a low salary hence good for the oilers.
EDM
  1. Kovacevic, Johnathan
  2. 2024 3rd round pick (MTL)
  3. 2024 5th round pick (SJS)
Additional Details:
Taking a 2nd rounder but offering a 3rd and a 5th.
4.
MTL
  1. Roy, Nicolas
Additional Details:
Vegas will need cap space, getting two good prospects plus a 2nd round pick should be a good return for Roy given Vegas normally just flips over contracts for nothing.
VGK
  1. Beck, Owen
  2. Heineman, Emil
  3. 2024 2nd round pick (COL)

Vegas would rather trade someone else. Roy is young and locked up for a team friendly deal. Also if they were interested in trading him, no highly doubt that he's worth that much. it's a pretty big overpayment.

Additionally COL would say no too. They don't want Barron and they're isn't room for him. Evans isn't the best player either and COL would probably want MTL to retain a good chunk of his contract.

Finally, if Vegas needs to get money to spend, who are they spending it on? Marchessault isn't leaving Vegas and he's also not worth 8 mil.

So Marshy leaves and we still trade Roy? Make it make sense…

We “give up” old players past their prime that are making too much. Name a player we just “gave up” that has done much since they left? We “gave up” Schmidt for a 4th, Haula for Roy, Nikita for a 2nd and finally Reilly Smith for a 3rd.

None of those guys had 3 years left at 3 million. Comparing apples to ass here lol

I disagree, but your comments are fair.

For me Roy is worth it. Beck will be a good 3rd or 4th Center; Roy is putting up numbers and from what we're seeing right now with Hugues is that they are fishing for QC players out there worth their time. I think he'd fit that profile.

COL - You have to look at their current cap situation, it's not bad, but it could be better. Barron would come back a better player than before and can take the spot of the older guys that may not be returning next year with a cap hit of less than 2M$/yr for a Defenseman that's not bad. They also need a good 4th line centreman, and for some reason, HABS players are suddenly good in Colorado.. Just look at Drouin and Lehkonen.. Lehk was nowhere near what he brought to them. I think Evans ain't gonna be that, but he'll be good enough for that 4th line.

Vegas/Marchessault - He's got 58 pts in 65 games this year has proven his worth in playoffs, so I think he's heading for the bank for his last contract. My view is that MTL will gain from a player like him, he's a leader and a QC native which like I said above, seems to be a road taken this year with Hugues. So he'll be careful, but right now he needs forwards since he's got the defense pretty much summed up for the next few years. I put in 8M$/yr, but you have to take into account that we need to put numbers at the max we think they may get for our team or from others that would want to bank in on UFA's.

With the slew of young players, MTL would benefit from him.

I'd like to have barron back, they can't fit evans under contract though. Sakic drafted barron and mack liked him. We don't have much in the system with his size so to have him come into the rotation next season could help with that.

If Edmonton doesn't re-sign Desharnais I could see them being interested in this.

I appreciate your post, was a good one. Im on the team that doesn't see it as a positive move for the Avs. RHD depth chart goes Makar, Manson, Malinski or Walker if he is a cheap resign. After that it is a drop off but Behrens maybe a ld/rd and they really liked Clurman as a JJ replacement when he got some pre-season games.
Barron wasn't smart enough to handle the Avs level of play and that has not changed. Trading a 1st for a guy you know doesnt fit, is a bad move during a deep draft. Barron is likely back to the AHL if the trade were to be made.

Personally don't see any interest there from the Avs. A 4C next year will probably be ELC/min contract for the Avs to fit them. Evans is too expensive for that role with the Avs. Barron is ok but the Avs were fine with trading him. He'd be fine to bring back into a rotation if the price was right but can't see the Avs giving up the first. Kovacevic is still the D that the Avs likely would have the most interest in on the Habs roster imo.
