Penguins Retool but Avoid Mortgaging the Future

Created by: pavelski_tip_in
Team: 2024-25 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 14, 2024
Published: Mar. 18, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Penguins avoid the rebuild until 25-26

(1) Fire Mike Sullivan

(2) Retain 2024 pick and Carolina makes Stanley Cup

(3) Trade for a top 6 forward with the 2 2024 first round picks.

(4) Offload Graves while he still maintains value (just not a good fit for the team)

(5) Round out the team with a few UFAs to improve the powerplay and complete the defensive group.

(6) Keep 2026 1st, Yager, and Pickering

  1. Keller, Clayton
Additional Details:
Keller might be swinging too high, but maybe the Coyotes look to cash in and start again in a new city.

If Keller is unavailable, #10 + #31 is a solid package that can net the Penguins a top 6 forward from a rebuilding team. Needs to be a team that would accept picks instead of players.

Other options could include Tuch or Caufield.
ARI
  1. Graves, Ryan
  2. 2024 1st round pick (CAR)
  3. 2024 1st round pick (PIT)
Additional Details:
Graves is not a salary dump but needs a change of scenery.

Pittsburgh pick is in the top 10.

0.81 PPG for Granlund vs 0.92 for Keller.

Sharks would have to include 3 3rds to make up the difference.

Not enough for Middleton, so the Wild say no. The Wild want more big mobile D-men anyway, not less.

Hard pass on Keller but I could see a way forward for Schmaltz. Wouldn't be as high as a price either

Schmaltz and 2025 2nd (TOR) for Graves (ret ~2MM) and [2024 1st (PIT) -Guarantee SJC gets unprotected 20251st.]

I take your point about it being an underpay for Keller.

Ignore Graves for a second and let me know a few players in the league you would value at 2 first round picks (one top 10 and one late first rounder). Bonus points if they play for a rebuilding team. It's about the same value as Chicago got for Debrincat coming off his 40 goal season.

I think you've done a good job at balancing out the value with the 2nd round pick and lopping off one of the 1sts.

At the end of the day, if I'm a GM trading a top 10 pick, I would want a nailed-on top line player. Schmaltz isn't even projected to hit 60 points this season (which may be a function of the team he plays for). Ottawa got a 40 goal scorer for #7 overall in the DeBrincat trade. Turns out he wasn't as good of a player as they had hoped, but they paid up for his goal scoring potential.
