Created by: rednwhite
Team: 2024-25 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 18, 2024
Published: Mar. 18, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Yzerman and his buddy verbeek get a deal done. Not sure soderblom is the prospect Anaheim wants but they find a way to get a deal done without Detroit giving up a 1st. Anaheim can retain and flip Husso at the deadline as well.

Husso needs to be at least NHL tandem quality in order to flip at 50% retained, convince me that he's even that.

Why in the world would you think that Anaheim would trade John Gibson "without Detroit giving up a 1st"?!?!?

Unfortunately there's not much Yzerman can do to upgrade his goaltending.

He'll just have to live with Husso and Lyon next season.

Ideally he could have a vet goalie for 2 years.

It's all about buying time for Cossa who's had an excellent season in Grand Rapids.

He's 21 years old.

Cossa will play next season in Grand Rapids.

Year after he'll likely serve as a back-up goalie in Detroit.

Year after in 26-27 he'll be ready to start.

They also have Augustine who looks like a very good goalie prospect.

He just turned 19. LOL

He backed Team USA to a gold medal win at the WJC.

Soderblom is hardly enough to replace or add to something else in order to replace a first.

At the end of the day he was a late pick with a lot of potential to become something good, but his skating is just bad and isn't developing. He may hang around for awhile and get chances with Detroit and other organizations because of his unteachable traits, but I don't see him becoming anything significant at the NHL level at this point.

Cossa would line up with Gibson’s contract imo

Gibson would be an option but Verbeek knows the Red Wings prospects pipeline very well.

Which is why I don't see a trade happening. LOL

But Red Wings can't be trading a 1st right now.

They're cratering.

That pick could be very good.

If Yzerman trades that 2024 1st for a 30+ goalie and not in a package for a RHD that's a significant upgrade from Jeff Petry, I'll start sobering up from the "Yzerplan" Kool-Aid.

GM's probably have trades agreed upon once the season is over.

Should be slowing down after some of those defensemen contracts he has given out, right?

Not really. At the end of the day it's staying the course of plugging holes while the kids develop. Holl got paid because he was the RHD plug available at the time, and they didn't realize Petry would be available for cheaper. Now they've just got a plug they don't need.

Neither hurts us long term. It's just annoying to watch them suck lol.

No, Husso hasn't been great this year. GSAA of -6

Who's worse you might be wondering?
Gibson - GSAA of -12
Vasilevskiy - GSAA of -9
Oettinger - GSAA of -10

So I wouldn't expect yet another retread goalie for next season and ride out Husso/Lyon until Cossa is ready.

Yeah cossa is going to be the guy but he won't be ready for a few years. Gibson will help bridge the gap and serve as a mentor for cossa.

Is his value really that high. He's been below average for the last while. I know he's had a bad team in front of him but I don't see him commanding a massive return. When was the last time a goalie was dealt for a huge return?

Cory Schneider for a 1st which turned out to be Bo Horvat.

I have a hard time seeing gibson landing a return of a 1st round pick. He could maybe go for a real late 1st but detroits pick will be in the 12-18 range. He's been below average for a while now, yes he's been on a poor team but a similar replacement in husso plus a prospect, 2nd and 3rd rounder seems like a fair price.

Thanks, I couldn't remember any in the past few years. Wasn't Schneider a young up and coming goalie though? Not a 30 year old overpaid vet.

Yeah Schneider was up and coming but the Canucks had Luongo.

Lou Lam was Devils GM and he needed a goalie.

Avs fleeced Montreal when they traded for Patrick Roy.

But Montreal just wanted to get rid of him at that point.

If he's not worth anything why would we want to trade for him then.
