Two top six forwards

Description
What I really like about this lineup and the flexibility down the middle. Acquiring Mercer not only gives the Bruins more hope at C in the long term (along with Poitras and Zacha), but also gives them more flexibility in shifting lines around since he can also play RW. I could also see Gentzel signing with Boston. 7 years is steep for a guy turning 30 at the start of next season, but I think that's the price you pay for the lower $8.8m cap hit. Finally, Alec Martinez or a similar veteran LHD joins to create some internal competition for Wotherspoon and Lohrei.

1 year of Ullmark is not worth that. Throw the 2025 1st for Ullmark. Keep Mercer.

You don't buy rentals using cost controlled roster players.

Ultimately, Ullmark is not a rental. He’ll be resigned likely at the beginning of the year. I’d rather have him than Markstrom when I consider age.

That said, I think there are a ton of other deal possibilities that don’t include Mercer.

I mean losing Mercer is tough, but you have the bite the bullet here if he’s the ask, or pay less for guy with more question marks like Markstrom

My view is always to just look at team control. Boston has control for 1 year. Yes we could extend him, but it would likely be at a market rate virtually identical to what we’d pay as a UFA.

A ton of options to put pieces in and Ullmark should 100% be the target.

There are plenty of other assets at NJ's disposal than Mercer.
Holtz, Bahl, Casey, Top-10 overall, 2025 1st.
If Boston wants to play games, there are other goalies to go and get (Saros, Jarry, Markstrom)

The question is do you lock him in or not. There are other options for you that are either older (Markstrom), more expensive (Saros), or not as good (Jarry).

Completely open to keeping him, but I think there is a trade there

I would trade for him, see how he works out, and look to potentially extend him if the fit and contract is right. No extension before he plays in jersey.

Obviously those pieces are ideal to move, but if Mercer is the ask I would prefer the team bites the bullet and brings in Ullmark. Would think he would be included in a Saros deal as well. But a player like Mercer shouldn’t be untouchable for the highest level goalies in Saros/Ullmark

Saros and Ullmark have 1 year of term. Would be very shortsighed to trade a 22 year old top 6 forward for 1 year at the most volatile position in hockey.
