Blues Potential Targets

Created by: StDetroitBlueWings
Team: 2024-25 St. Louis Blues
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 26, 2024
Published: Mar. 26, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This is just to determine asking price.

Blues could use a 2C. Really only Stephenson fits that in free agency this year, so plan B?
1LD is another need, but would need to move one of Krug and/or Leddy to make that happen I would bet.

Other options are to target younger "change of scenery" guys. Low risk and high reward
Trades
1.
STL
  1. Danault, Phillip
Additional Details:
What's the cost? A few players to sign and deep at center
LAK
2.
STL
  1. Kakko, Kaapo [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
Wonder how optics on him have changed. Still a candidate to be traded, especially if they don't think they can resign him? Buchnevich 2.0?
NYR
3.
STL
  1. Samuelsson, Mattias
Additional Details:
Deal involving these two? Buffalo has 4654549831 LD and could use a veteran presence on the blue line
BUF
  1. Faulk, Justin
Additional Details:
Base of deal. Add other players as needed (retention is most likely not happening)
4.
STL
  1. Hague, Nicolas
  2. Roy, Nicolas
Additional Details:
Wouldn't mind either of these. Roy a 2C, Hague next to Parayko would be intriguing as well. Asking price for Roy would be high I imagine
VGK
5.
STL
  1. Berggren, Jonatan [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
Snag a younger guy for cheap?
DET
6.
STL
  1. Lundell, Anton [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
Are they going to be able to sign him? Currently around 20mil to sign at least 10 guys. Potentially trade for his RFA Rights

Danault is going nowhere, PLDs slow start in LA has solidified the need of Danault well past Kopitar leaving.

No chance Los Angeles trades Phillip Danault. Moore -- Danault -- Arvidsson/Fiala have been our most effective and consistent line since January 1, 2023. That's right, 2023, not 2024. We won't be trading him because his acquisition is what Rob Blake points to every time somebody brings up Pierre-Luc DuBois.

Yeah, we can forget Danault. I think Roy could be a real possibility, Vegas gonna need to shed something.

Don't know what your offer for Berggren would be but it would have to be something worth while and it won't be "cheap" like you say

With Buffalo's increasing cap hits from Power and Dahlin I can't see us making that trade; especially without any retention.

Sabres trade could happen if cap hits are equal, which would not be agreed by Blues. Cannot see Sabres adding anoter big salary to defense.

Noted on Danault. Wasn't sure on their situation with Kopitar and PLD as other C options, then needing to pay Byfield and Turcotte this offseason.

It wouldn't be "cheap" as in a late pick, but would be maybe a 2nd or combination of another younger asset heading to MoTown plus a pick. Just not 100% sure how Detroit values Berggren right now. Has the potential but they just don't seem to be utilizing him at all.

Retention would drive any price up on this. Certainly could retain but it won't be 50% like I've seen others suggesting. Maybe 2 mil or so to make it a similar hit to was Samuelsson would be, but would need a pick or another asset to have to retain, or another player heading to the Blues to offset the retention (Krebs maybe?)

Oddly enough, there was no market for Buch and he was a “cap casualty” hence the low return

And the Blues are grateful for that. Really interested in seeing what happens with Chytil if he can come back. For his sake, I hope so but that could complicate things there with needing to pay others like Kakko. He may be available depending on other variables but I know it'll be a decent asking price. Personally, especially after his struggles this year, I value him at a late first, early second. So my offer would be a 2nd and 4th, which is most likely not enough which is fine. Just wonder about a change of scenery and new opportunity will benefit Kakko

I mean even with chytil coming back, they have enough cap space to give Kakko a 1 year prove it deal

If it doesn’t workout I’d hope the rangers package him and their 1st for a top 6 RW

Kakko and the first for Buch? Lol. Not even sure the Blues go for that without someone else though, like a LD. If Kakko was smart, a one year prove it deal would be best to show he can bounce back, then cash in after a good season and the cap going up more. Or if he wants that security, a long term contract but it won't be a high AAV

Agreed.. wonder how a Krebs + Samuelsson for Faulk (2mil retained) trade looks. Or if that's legitimately it. Would assume picks involved and/or other minor players

I honestly don’t think Buch would even waive to go back to the rangers, they soured the relationship

Kakko needs to work on his skating. He has trouble creating separation and offense

Kakko is most likely better than the kid what will be drafted in the 2nd round and that pick probably can’t acquire a player who’s better than Kakko either

Kakko > 2nd

Maybe but you could say that about any player

Pat Marron is better than the kid that will be selected with the 7th therefore Pat Marron > 7th

The fall off of talent after the 1st is drastic….this isn’t the NFL where you can find NHL talent in the 4th round as likely

Also they’re trying to win now so futures are irrelevant

We’re not shedding the guy making 3 million thru our cup window that can play up and down the entire lineup.

I think Hague or Whitecloud could be on the move. Also maybe Howden/McNabb

Buch wanted 5.8m which is why highest bid was a 2nd+, Kakko will make 1/2 that, 2x 2.9m. He's is going to have a good career, tons of promise and is worth a mid 1st easy.
He is in our plans for now... but it all comes down to how he delivers this post season...
