Re-Evaluate The Evaluator

Created by: Missouri
Team: 2024-25 Columbus Blue Jackets
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 18, 2024
Published: Mar. 27, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This is a simulated result of what trades/signings were made in our GHL GM League for a simulated off-season.

GM's were tasked with the job of getting their team ready for the season. They had to stay within the salary cap restrictions and must have a maximum of 6 players on the Taxi Squad for injury relief purposes.

Your job is to comment and evaluate how the GM managed their team.

Questions to answer:
1. What was the best move made by the GM?
2. What was the worst move made by the GM?
3. Did the GM improve the team or make them worse?

Thank you for playing! Our GHL GM League is played for a couple of months then posted on CapFriendly for everyone to see the results made by the GM's!

1. Best move: getting Marchenko to sign for less than $5M, I'm 100% expecting a 4x$5.5M or something like that.
2. Worst move: Bean for 4 years? He's a serviceable defenseman, but a bottom-pair LD isn't the guy you lock up like that.
3. Improve? Yes, adding a top veteran UFA goalie and top UFA center while keeping the majority of the current roster is going to improve the team nearly every time.

The tweaks I'd make: find a way to move Elvis, get Jiricek on the 1st or 2nd pair, and probably not sign Lindholm. I know he makes the team better now, but that'll be an albatross contract in 4ish years right when the rest of the team is ready to fully compete. If you really believe in Fantilli, signing him shouldn't be necessary.

I can’t see NSH saying no to that— Boqvist could do well in Brunette’s system.

Best move: The extensions to Chinakhov, Marchenko, Sillinger, and KJ are all surprisingly decent.
Worst move: Lindholm. That's an albatross waiting to happen. The trades aren't much better; very poor value for our guys. (Dumping Texier in favor of Tatar or Mantha in particular really rankles.)
Better or worse: Short-term better, but probably not enough to make much of a move in the standings. Long-term worse because of cap crunch concerns.
