Youth Dubas Said He Expects To Fight For Spots Next Season

Created by: Fluxcc
Team: 2024-25 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 27, 2024
Published: Mar. 27, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
- Today on the Mark Madden show, Dubas said he expects Gruden, St. Ivany, Poulin, Ponomarev, Koivunen, Blomqvist, Yager and Pickering to be ready to battle for spots on the roster this upcoming season.

- Assuming all the people he named make the roster, it would look like this below.

- I just moved all the older guys that we would have to trade to LTIR, just to show the cap space we would have to fill a 1LW and 1LD spot.

- Would also potentially have to fill 2C and 3LD spots if Yager and Pickering aren't quite ready yet. (26.7 million in cap space, if Yager and Pickering aren't ready yet).

OBVIOUSLY THIS IS PURELY HYPOTHETICAL AND THE CHANCE THEY ALL MAKE THE ROSTER IS HIGHLY UNLIKELY, KEEP THAT IN MIND, THIS IS JUST SHOWING WHAT IT WOULD LOOK LIKE IF EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM ACTUALLY MAKE THE ROSTER OUT OF TRAINING CAMP.

Curious if that means he may let SJ have this years first even if it's in the 7-10 range.

This is the approach that SJ had when Pavelski, Braun, Nyqvist, Donskoi, etc left in 2019-2020, of "letting the youth fill out spots in the lineup" and that resulted in Ottawa getting Stutzle at 3rd overall with the Sharks unprotected first

That could very well be the case, yeah.

Maybe Dubas should be another guy fighting for a job.

I definitely think Dubas needs to just focus on PoHO things and hire a GM and he can work with that GM on roster building. I would LOVE Jason Botterill, the AGM from the Seattle Kraken.

Including the two kids he got in the Guentzel trade may just be window dressing and he's the one who put Gruden on waivers, so I'm not too sure about those three, or the goalie prospect when it should be pretty easy to re-sign Nedeljkovic. You guys should be patient with Ryan Graves so that you don't rush Pickering. I think getting someone to fill the #1LW hole should be the #1 off-season priority and getting something useful for Rakell or Smith would be a real step forward.

Yeah must be hard making over $45m on this contract. I'm sure no NHL executive has ever managed a harder situation than poor Dubas...

If Dubas hires a GM it will be hand picked to manage certain operations. Spezza might be most likely. This isn't a unique situation, Rutherford makes the decisions in Vancouver as Pres. of Hockey Ops.

I can see Ponomarev taking the 4C and moving Acciari to 4RW, Poulin taking the 3C and trading Eller as he should have decent value. Or keeping Eller to play LW if Yager doesn’t win a spot. I think Pickering is more likely a mid season call up. St Ivany likely wins the spot this year if he continues playing like he is. Him and Ludvig on the 3rd pair is a heavy defensive pair. Koivunen I would think is another mid season call up unless he absolutely crushes it in camp and pre season, which I think would force Dubas to trade Rakell (not sure they’d get a lot for him, but the cap space would be worth it). I think Blomqvist has to crush it too otherwise they can re-sign Ned or another vet backup.

How is it nepotism? The ownership groups made the hire with this structure in mind. The Murray family being NHL executives or Shero was nepotism.
