Penguins are trying to get younger, as much as I love Staal, we are not taking him back.

He nearly hit 30 last year and will almost certainly hit 25 this year. As much as you complain about this deal it isn't without risk for the Hurricanes too

And?

The offer is asking for Toronto's 3 best assets for a guy due to make 8 million+ and even with everyone taking sweetheart deals, you can't afford

We can afford him... we would just need to get younger... we have managed the cap so well that this offseason is going to be relatively painless compared to other cap crunches. This is because unlike in Toronto our stars actually care about winning instead of getting every single dollar possible... just look at Aho

Let me rephrase; you can't afford him while also paying for Guentzel and still remaining competitive

We actually can because our best players actually take discounts to stay with the team... just look at Aho. We'll just have to bridge Jarvis for a year and then pay him next offseason

Just because our players are on 120 point paces or on 70 goal paces... Is why our players get more than yours...

And if Jarvis is going to bridge, it's going to be for 5+ mill and Guentzel's taking more...

You are also going to find a replacement for Lilly

Therefore, you can't sign Necas and Guentzel while still fielding a good team without a dump (KK)... And it's going to cost a decent bit as teams know they have the leverage

They were gonna offer him 11m on the open market... and unlike Marner and co. he didn't want every possible dollar

Why wouldn't they? He's about to put up 90 points as one of the best defensive players in the league

Tavares got $11m in free agency from the Leafs at a much larger % of the cap and he and Aho were on similar tiers when they signed their respective contracts
