Description
Ok. I KNOW this is gonna piss some people off.

In the Habs fanbase there are PLD haters that say he's the next Drouin and we dodged a bullet.

In the LA Kings fanbase, there are people who don't want to trade him. Not because they love him, but because they feel they would be selling low after paying a lot to get him.

That being said, let's explore the possibility that there is a deal to be made here that can work for both sides and is fair based on his average production over the past 2 years without focusing too much on upside.

My personal perspective is that PLD IS better than he's shown this year, but that his production will be 60-70 points per year over this deal, and that is what I am paying 8.5M for which is overpriced.

Thanks for hearing me out. Now release the hounds and let them tear me apart!

Trades
MTL
  1. Dubois, Pierre-Luc
Additional Details:
In PLD the Habs are not really taking a gamble. We have all seen PLD play for years and he has been great on some nights and mediocre on others, but he has been a consistent 60 point player. Unfortunately in LA, Danault was once again underestimated and has outplayed PLD for a top 6 role. Part of that probably has to do with the winning culture in LA that is a lot less forgiving of players taking creative liberties and coughing up the puck.

PLD would fit well on a line with Dach & Newhook, 2 exceptionally hard working guys. He is the kind of guy who needs to be dragged into the fight, but he is incredibly valuable once you get him going.
LAK
  1. Anderson, Josh
  2. Beck, Owen
  3. Primeau, Cayden
  4. 2024 1st round pick (WPG)
Additional Details:
Let's get the unpleasant part out of the way first. Josh Anderson is an overpaid 3rd line winger who has had a historically bad season and needs out of Montreal in the worst way. He is added to this deal to balance out the overpayment of PLD, but only for the next 3 years. It's a bitter pill for LA to swallow, but because of this, they can also get fair value for PLD in the rest of the deal.

I feel LA will need a backup next season and Primeau will make a good one, especially at 1M salary ahead of his RFA status.

In Beck LA gets an up and coming 2-way forward who is marked by the fact that contending teams in the OHL have traded many assets for him multiple years in a row. He is consistently in the top 5 in faceoff percentage and he has closed out the OHL regular season on a 20-game point streak (talk about consistency!). He is ready to turn pro next year and it's up to LA to decide whether they want him in the AHL or the NHL. It seems likely he can make an NHL team out of training camp.

LA also gets a late 1st round pick in this upcoming draft.

Yes, Blake signed Petersen, and the Kings lost Walker who fetched a first and are paying $2M for it. GM made a bad move and had to correct it, Flyers got a first from Walker which makes them easily the winners of that trade. At the end of the day Blake has a few mistakes and owning up to any more likely costs his job. The only way PLD gets fair value in a trade is if he is a force in the playoffs. Otherwise his NMC kicks in July and these trades can finally die.

I hope you're right, but I think everyone and their grandmother knows that NMC is completely irrelevant if it relates to a potential trade to MTL.

It really does, if PLD only wants to move to Montreal, why would Montreal be motivated to provide a favorable trade for LA. At this point PLD is staying in LA barring some actual value and no negative contracts coming back.

I have seen a PLD trade to Montreal every week since last year, and it typically is done by Habs fans. It typically becomes an echo chamber of how lucky the Habs are that they didn't trade for PLD.

We get it, congratulations, but can these trade threads die already?

PLD isn't half as awful as people have thought, and if Blake moved PLD at a loss he would be fired because it would be his third losing move this year (moved Cal Peterson at a loss, fired one of the most expensive coaches in the league, and now this). He isn't getting moved, and will likely improve in LA, which he has, honestly over his last 10 games, I don't have a lot to be upset about.

I don't think that's the kind of post I made here. I think I am offering good value plus one bad contract which is short in comparison to PLD's deal. The bad contract is a payment for the inherent risk in the deal.

I would love to get PLD, I think he would be a great asset but I would rather send one of Newhook or Dach back to facilitate the trade than include Beck and a 1st. I know it's not a popular opinion around here but neither Dach or Newhook have proven to be what we hoped they would. Newhook is on pace for his first .5 ppg season and Dach is too injury prone for me

I think it comes down to player timelines. Dach can add value next season and hopefully the Habs have Beck in the AHL for a year.

The PLD ship has sailed (hopefully). Him having "effort issues" has really solidified itself as a real thing. Almost everyone gave him the benefit of the doubt in CBJ, a few still gave him the benefit of the doubt in WIN, now almost no one is giving him the benefit of the doubt in LA...

Habs should steer clear from PLD... Would be nice to shed Anderson's contract (would rather shed Gallagher's in this case), but as someone else mentioned above, it comes down to the difference in actual dollars. PLD will have over $50mil in salary left to be paid off, whereas Anderson (or Gallagher) would have less than $20mil... adding the effort issues from PLD, it's clearly not worth the risk, let alone having to add a prospect of Beck's caliber AND a 1st rd pick.... hard pass

Thanks for the thoughtful rejection. Appreciate that it's a discussion at least.

The Kings traded several high-level wingers to obtain a center, with Kopitar retiring in 2-3 seasons having a top-6 center is their priority, second priority is a top-10 goalie to bridge the gap until Portillo is here. They can likely get a goalie stop gap from free agency, they have proven this season that is doable.

LA won't move PLD until it is clear they have a top-6 center in their system or who is coming back. If that can't be addressed, at least a goalie would need to be part of this. If negative contracts come back, Blake will get fired. He's stuck, and hoping PLD will improve, and since the coaching change that has occurred. So no trade here, they will keep rolling the dice with PLD.

Im low on Beck, no need for Primeau and a late 1st. If that's for PLD alone then fine, but it'll take all of those assets to dump Anderson anyways so LAK may as well hold onto PLD.

You are one of the only ones. Beck is gonna be a great 3rd line player for a championship team.

I think 2 teams can trade risky contracts. PLD IS risky. Anderson IS risky. Anderson needs the kind of structure they force players to adhere to in LA. PLD needs the freedom to express himself creatively that MSL offers.

I think it's a good deal all around.

Agreed, my point is just regardless if PLD's NMC has kicked or not, we all know he'd be ok going to MTL. That doesn't mean he wouldn't waive for other teams, but there's no certainty there.

You must be confusing me with someone else sir.

He's also 6'3, 220 pounds, stands in front of the net, and scores 60 points per year.

FWIW - Dach & Newhook have never been able to score 63 points in a season. I hope they do if they can ever stay healthy.

dach + newhooks salary/cap still lower than pld. combined

yea okay bro and the prospect of a great 3rd liner is so massive in trades!

You are inflating all of your players. anderson is a bottom 5 contract in hockey, he is only getting moved as a dump or with another star, not for a star on a down year. What if I sent Anderson from another team for Caufield since he only has 20 goals? That would be insane because we all know he is gonna rebound. Cmon

Frankly who cares about production, he's been on a number of teams now and left each one with a sour taste in their mouths. I want no part of PLD and its officially buyer beware with him. Not worth the risk. I was totally on board bringing him in this past offseason but seeing how he's been in LAK, Im glad they didn't get him.

Anderson can be bought out if we're at that point with him. Not only are the Habs paying top dollar for PLD here, they're also taking on massive risk. there's no need. They're probably drafting a center this year, getting Dach back next year and are still a lottery team/non playoff team. The right play here is to be patient and if anything add through free agency where the only really costs are overpaying cap, which the Habs have oodles of so its not a huge burden.

I don't disagree with you on UFA, but every time I suggest bringing in players like Monahan, Toffoli, Marchessault, Reinhart, or even trading before the TDL for Hertl, I get tons of pushback from the same crowd complaining that those players will become an albatross before their contract is up.

Essentially the fans around here only value young players, and only if you can trade for them by offering a bunch of Bs and Cs for an A+ and then severely underpay the player.

Like Harris, Armia, and WPG's 1st for Boldy is ever gonna freaking happen?! You need to give something to get something. You always need to manage your risk, but sometimes risks pay off. Dach & Newhook deals were risks. They are working out (ish). I think PLD could work out too. I don't believe that he's a Prima Donna, if I did I would not trade for him.

I think you are wrong about them being a bottom feeder team next year. They will make moves this offseason and push for the playoffs.

Ya I meant to say, assuming they don't do anything major of note, they wont be a playoff team again next year. I agree they won't be a bottom feeder next year. Frankly they wouldn't have been a bottom feeder this year if it weren't for Dach's injury.

Regardless, Im all for going to get solid talent through trade, just not for PLD. But I also think unless they win the lottery, Im all for them staying the course with a slow and steady progression too.

Now John i normally agree with your posts but this one you got all wrong... He is not worth 8.5 million and he is not great in the room and it would affect our culture with our young players who are better than him but he is going to get paid more than them. We dont need him. We need a young stud with potential to play wing and score goals.. Dvorak is a good defensive center and so is Evans and Beck and you have Dach and Roy in the top six and maybe newhook too... we totally dont need an overpriced player with questionable work habits and effort just because he is tall and is from quebec... I would rather trade for Zegras but he probably isnt smart either.. just draft a goal scorer in the draft and be patient with the rebuild.
