Some ideas to improve defensively and up scoring

Created by: GiggywithGibby
Team: 2024-25 Anaheim Ducks
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 19, 2024
Published: Apr. 19, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Take a RHD with our first round pick, flip LaCombe to move up to take MBN

Roll three scoring lines and one shutdown line, keep the nuclear deterrent in Johnston on the side to swap out as needed.

Top line should be very gritty and battle well, gives Leo room to cook as a playmaker

2nd line has Lundestrom as a disruptor/support piece while Zegras playmaker to Terry.

Third line of Vatrano McTavish Killorn should be plenty nasty and chaos causing.

4th line is big and heavy for shutdown purposes.

Trade Strome for TVR, Washington is light in the middle 6 and could be looking to open a spot for Iorio, gives Cam the defensive partner he desperately needs to ride out his contract with.

Sign Roy to babysit Mintyukov, grab Reinhart to be 1RW.

Grab Kampf from Toronto to center the 4th line and leak the PK.

I don't watch much Anaheim, Why do you not have Killorn in either a net front or bumper position on a PP or PK?

If the Blues cannot trade up and Jiricek is already gone at 16, I could definitely see them considering that. As of right now, probably not. I suppose it depends on how hot Army is for LaCombe.

Too slow to be on the PK, keeps getting burned. Could put him on the PP I just didn't.

I could see Toronto doing that, though I'm not sure Kampf accepts the trade (not trying to knock on Anaheim, just may be the reality).

Didn't think you were, was just commenting from what I've seen. His foot speed isn't there to keep up, he's been getting walked a lot and we don't have the same defensive abilitsteucture to cover for it. With a better overall defense we might be able to.

He's been a speed bump more than a wall on the PK

That sucks thanks. Ironically I guess his skating had been getting better he was a much better skater at 33 than 26/7. Hopefully he just didn't fully recover from the knee injury.

I like pretty much everything here. The one thing I’m totally opposed to is Lundestrom in the top 6. He just has not shown an ability to produce or facilitate offense. He’s chalked up as a 4th liner in my book at this point. (We need to stop spending late 1st rd picks on guys we hope to be a 3rd liner.. I.e Gaucher as well)

If you shift Z to 2LW,, bump up McT to 2C, Kampf to 3C, and Lunde to 4C that’d be more my preference

Gotta pay up for a short term deal. Doesn't hurt our cap situation before it's over.

He's on that line as a support piece. Fore checking, puck digging, secondary faceoff, defensive improvement, etc. I get where you're coming from, but I would rather spread the talent out over 3 lines. I could have put Killorn there but between him and Zegras the lack of foot speed on that line would get caved in. Jones could go there too, but I think Zegras and Terry are enough offense to carry the line.

Vatrano could also go there but I decided to keep that line together.

I hear you and it’s totally well thought out. I’m just fully anti Lunde anywhere in the top 6 (possibly 9) at this point. I think he’ll hold that line back despite having a decent motor. Skill wise he’s just a full step step behind those two linemates where I feel like anytime we have the puck he’s going to look lost. If he manages to be in the right spot, he’s gonna find a way to hit their netminder square

Would love for him to prove me wrong, but it just hasn’t been there. These are all just coaching decisions though. The team itself here 👌🏼

Ironically enough, Lundestrom has the third highest shooting percentage on the team north of 13% After McTavish and Vatrano. He just doesn't shoot that often. I think a lot of his offensive black hole nature is due to being saddled with Silfverberg on his line, but I guess we'll see next season if he is kept around.

That’s honestly part of the red flag for me. He doesn’t have some elite shot, his sample size is just low, and I’d expect regression to the mean for that shooting % on a bigger sample. The dude averages less than a shot per game not only this year, but in his 250+ game NHL career. The avg NHL shooting % is close to 10%, meaning the forecast I would make for his goal tally next year would be around 8.

He’s never reached 48% taking faceoffs, his Gf/60 is always near the team low, and his GA/60 and advanced stats aren’t good either. I’m just not sure what hope is left to hold on to for him
