Boston keeps him at that price and he has one last run while they use cap space to fill other voids.

There really isn't a history of that type of trade.

There have been four rental goalies, who alone have returned a 1st round pick

1. Bill Ranford (1/11/96): 1st (#19), Sean Brown, Mariusz Czerkawski
2. Dominik Hasek (7/1/01): Vyacheslav Kozlov, 2002 1st (#30)
3. Dwayne Roloson (3/8/06): 2006 1st (#17), conditional 2007 3rd
4. Darcy Kuemper (7/28/21): Conor Timmins, 2022 1st (#29), conditional 2024 3rd

(Both Ranford and Hasek had option years)
(All were sent to playoff teams)
(Only two were done over the summer...both to contenders)
(One was reigning Vezina winner, all four had been top-10 twice or more in recent years)

There have been three other goalies, who alone have returned 1st plus 2nd or 3rd

1. Tomas Vokoun (6/22/07): 2008 1st, 2007 2nd, 2008 2nd (had $5.7m x 4 years remaining)
2. Semyon Varlamov (7/1/11): 2012 1st, 2012 2nd (RFA, signed $2.83m x 3 year extension)
3. Frederik Andersen (6/20/16): 2016 1st, 2017 2nd (RFA, signed $5m x 5 year extension)

(all had extensions in place or term remaining)

There has been one other rental goalie, who have returned 1st or more, with other pieces attached, over the summer

1. Vesa Toskala (6/22/07): 2007 1st, 2nd , 4th (with Mark Bell) (rental)

There have been eight other goalies with term/control, who have returned 1st or more, with other pieces attached, over the summer

1. Don Edwards (6/8/82): 1982 1st (#9), 1983 1st, 1982 2nd (#30), 1983 2nd (with Richie Dunn, 1983 1st, 1982 2nd (#37))
2. Bob Janecyk (6/9/84): 1984 1st (#3), 1984 4th (with 1984 1st (#6), 1984 3rd, 1984 4th)
3. Rick Wamsley (6/9/84): 1984 1st (#8oa), 2nd (with 2nd, 2nd, 3rd)
4. Curtis Joseph (8/4/95): 1996 1st, 1997 1st (with Mike Grier)
5. Kevin Weekes (6/24/00): 2000 1st (#5oa), 4th (with 2nd)
6. Ron Tugnutt (6/18/02): 2002 1st (#20) (with 2002 2nd)
7. Cory Schneider (6/30/13): 2013 1st (#9)
8. Martin Jones (6/30/15): Sean Kuraly, 2016 1st

There have been five other goalies, who have returned 1st or more, with other pieces attached, during season

1. Roland Melanson (11/19/84): 1985 1st, (NYI option of flipping in 1985, 1986)
2. Ken Wregget (3/6/89): Two 1989 1sts
3. Grant Fuhr (2/2/93): Dave Andreychuk, Darren Puppa, 1993 1st (with 5th)
4. Ryan Miller (2/28/14): Chris Stewart, William Carrier, Jaroslav Halak, 2015 1st, 3rd (with Steve Ott) (rental)
5. Joonas Korpisalo (3/1/23): Jonathan Quick, 2023 1st, 3rd (with Vladislav Gavrikov) (rental)

In other words, Ullmark alone is unlikely to get a 1st rounder before 2024 draft, when he cannot have an extension attached. Maybe if Bruins attach another piece or wait until later in summer once his window to extend opens up. Or perhaps if he is dealt to a contender, where the pick will be known to be late. He also has a modified NTC, which limits his market potential.

Most GM’s, who have this caliber of goaltender, don’t entertain trading them unless forced to cap wise. Cap related trades are generally done at a discount.

I don’t believe we can acquire Timo Meier for a discount because Taylor Hall netted two AHL types with the Bruins up against the cap. Yet that seems to be the concept thrown around here with goaltenders.

As I take a look at talented teams whose years were destroyed and whose playoff ceilings are limited because of poor goaltending, I am OK keeping both goalies.

My perspective is most late first rounders can be amply replaced statistically by an AHL free agent, a second draft candidate, or a minimum player looking for a chance on a good team. It’s probably the most overrated asset in hockey followed closely by a 2nd round pick. Every draft has that stage where it goes from great prospect to good prospect to talented flyer

You take them when you know you are going to lose a player, because it’s a flyer with upside that likely will fail to materialize into anything. When they do, it’s great for cap health.
