Initial Creation Date: Apr. 23, 2024

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
A big risk with goaltending but Campbell was looking better in the AHL. A deal like this clears Edmonton with salary unused while Skinner remains number 1. For he senators it is a risk to see eof Campbell, forsberg or sogard can be #1 but with the small retention and draft pick (could be upped to a 1st round) it could be enticing to try Campbell if he can provide new found value.
Signings provide top 9 depth and depending on how Norris returns, Brodie, harmonic etc... can be dropped to minors to accommodate salary.

EDM says no, it's cheaper for us to buy out Campbell and getting Korp just puts us in another cap dump situation.

1. Brannstrom gets less money if we're bringing him back.

2. An extension for Pinto will be 5-6 years long.

3. We are not signing Monahan or Bertuzzi.

4. Brodie gets way more money.

5. The Jack Campbell trade doesn't make much sense for either team.

6. Seattle declines.

I could be off with Brannstrom and Pinto. They were guesses. Monahan and Bertuzzi can make sense of reading the description for good overall depth. Brodie getting more money let him walk. He is a playoff healthy scratch and playing barely usable for the entire year. He is no longer worth more than 1 million. The Campbell trade can actually make sense as buyouts last longer years than the term. He term is similar and if Campbell is to never play again, they will look to trade him. Korpi gives a goalie without the length of buyout as Campbell is like 6 years of 1.5 million. Ottawa is giving a goalie deserving of a second chance for a much lower salary then even Korpi.

Campbell buyout is about 6 years of minimum 1.5 million. And a capable backup is still them needed to sign.

We can get a backup for 1M, taking on 4M while still retaining on Campbell puts us more in the hole.
Situational this trade just doesn't make sense.

It's still cheaper for us, either we buy him out at 1.5-2 million on average for 6 years and just take the dead cap penalty with no risk or we retain 1.5 million on the guy for the next 3 years while getting back another potential cap causality that runs us 4 million for the next 4 years that could be another potential buy out. It's a lateral move for us over the next 3 years as we would be paying 5.5 million in total and if we buyout Korpisalo it would be 1.3 million over 6 years after that. I think we would rather just buy him out or dump his entire contract somewhere else without taking one back

Campbell costs $3.8M against the cap right now. Why would Edmonton want to trade him for a $5.5M Korpisalo, who likely isn't any better than Campbell?

Campbell will be bought out or moved for cap space. They aren't going to take on MORE cap in return.
