Toronto can trade for the value of 1 year of Marner, but can't get value for the Hawks signing an extension which would have to happen after the trade. For that reason, the Hawks aren't giving up that much for a 1 year rental, which again, is the only value the Leafs own of Marner.

That's crazy to give up anything for 6m Markstrom. There are good UFA goalies available for free.
Same with Parayko. Just sign a short term UFA, and keep the picks
Can't see the Hawks giving up so much for Marner...even with this unlikely extension before the trade.

Replace Arbrusseze with Knies and Conroy considers it.

You're right. If the Leafs can trade NMC Marner....and it's a big if, the value to the Leafs will be clearing 11m in cap space for other player(s), not a big return from the Hawks.
I tend to think Matthews might be willing to accept to some team, despite his NMC. He has four years at 13.4m. That could be a better trade for the "rebuilding" Leafs if they go that way.

Just curious why the Leafs couldn't sign Marner to an extension prior to the trade? He's eligible to sign an extension this summer, right?

With an extension in place, that's a fair package for Marner. Not sure that Kyle from Chicago would do it, but it's a fair trade.

They could, but why would Marner agree to a sign and trade? Generally that is an unlikely scenario, as why would either party agree to a price that is beneficial to another team...rarely see that and due to the collective bargaining agreement, 3 parties can't sit in a room together and negotiate (at least they are not supposed to).

He has a NMC now. His new contract will include a NMC. It's the NMC in place right now that holds up a possible trade. But you're correct, if he's willing to be traded to this new team , and can agree on a new extension....acceptable to Marner, his new team, and trade acceptable to his new team and the Leafs....certainly it is workable.

Thanks! I thought he COULD sign an extension before the trade. I realize it's very unlikely to happen, but it is possible.

Here's my thought on Marner. He's not leaving the Leafs without an extension in place. He needs to play with premium forwards to up his value for his next contract.
Now the Hawks are one of few teams that have the cap for him this season....and it looks like Hawks have "hope" so a Hawks trade or even signing him as a UFA in summer of 2025 is a possibility .
Heck, I've proposed that maybe Matthews who is signed for four more season at 13.3m might waive his NMC if he thinks the Leafs are going rebuilding without Marner/Tavares and maybe even Nylander. Again the Hawks could be destination for Matthews if Leafs/ Matthews want to go in that direction.
