His cap space makes us able to add more depth including to the center position. He's the most expendable defenseman we have that will fetch a decent return. Letang and Schultz are NOT going to be moved. Dumoulin isn't going anywere. Cole (our most physical Dman) is a UFA after this year and only cost $2.9m right now. So Maatta is the logical one to shop. Just like all of us shopping Sheary. He's going to make $4m + ... would you rather have the cap space for depth or the player with the cap hit?

It's not because either suck. It's because they both have value that can be traded for value and cap space.

Brown and Kadri and their 50 goals fetch a much better return than a meh Dman and high 20s or maybe 31 pick. Kadri and Brown for Schultz and Sheary...at least.
