Damon Severson and the Devils

Created by: MG1986
Team: 2017-18 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 7, 2017
Published: Sep. 7, 2017
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
WHY THIS TRADE MAKES SENSE FOR BOTH CLUBS:

Toronto: This deal provides an immediate upgrade on defense in offense, defense, speed and experience. It also frees up some cap space and frees 3 spots on our 50-contract list so that both Carl Gundstrom and Tim Liljegren do not have to be loaned back to Sweden for the years. The addition of Mike McLeod would fill Bozak's spot at center, once he departs as UFA.

New Jersey: this deal provides the Devils with 4 immediate NHL-calibre players, 5 if you count Kerby Rychel, who is blocked from a spot on the Leafs. This deal also includes 2 of the top-5 Leafs forward prospects and 1 of the Leafs top-5 defensive prospects. I love Nielsen, but he is quite blocked on the left side. Although I am sure I will get a lot of slack for the inclusion of Mike McLeod in this deal, remember that he is quite blocked with Adam Henrique, Travis Zajac (once he returns from injury), Nico Hirshier and Pavel Zacha at center.

WHY THIS DEAL DOES NOT WORK FOR BOTH CLUBS:

Toronto: although this deal is pretty much a win, it goes against there long-term strategy of youth, drafting and development. While a second rounder may not seem all that bad to lose, this will be one heck of a draft in 2018 and is arguably viewed with the same weight as a 1st rounder from the 2017 draft.

New Jersey: the Devils would be trading away one of their bright spots on defense in Damon Severson and one of their top prospects in Mike McLeod.

If ever you watch a Leafs game, Mike Babcock focuses on a balanced attack. The lineup you see is not a depth chart. It's just a right-left combination I think would work between youth and experience and what was successful, or reasonably successful, last season (with Nikita and Jake). I don't think the Devils could afford to turn down such a deal if they actually wanted to rebuild successfully. Now with Butcher, and probably getting quite a high 1st for the 2018 draft, they will land themselves a much better defenseman than Damon Severson.

Sorry, it is kind of hard to watch a Leafs game from another country. Anyway, New Jersey needs defense man and it makes no sense to trade a good, young one for forwards.

McLeod is not blocked this yr and will have a few months to show his stuff.
We need RWs and although hes a C playing wing to start wont hurt him, so although your thoughts are good if they were right, they just are not.
Shero looks like he is going to play the kids and see what they have. As long as there looks to be progress its fine, if it lands us a top 5 that too will be ok. Its a marathon not a sprint with the Devs, even I myself keep wanting to add guys from teams who are just hitting their stride (which I still think we should do-young on the cusp of breakout players). Sevs will be signed, Shero is waiting for anything else to fall into his lap!

Liljegren no longer has a deal with his Swedish club, they've released him to the Toronto Maple Leafs. As for the deal, I don't think it's allowed via league standards (I could be wrong) but also that just doesn't work for the Leafs. As you said, it goes completely against their long term plans, but it's not something that the team truly needs nor is it something that the Devils want to give up. We don't need McLeod, we have Brooks and Bracco coming up, plus the possibility of Aaltonen or if Nylander slots to the center. Liljegren will grow and possibly be ready for a depth/3rd pairing role next season if he doesn't shine brightly in the AHL this season, so right now the team isn't in a panic to trade for a youngish RHD that could play for them long term but rather the possibility to get a 3rd pairing veteran.
If you haven't followed that Marlies, then you missed how well Nielsen did (points production wise) in his first season in the pros and how well Kapanen produced, not to mention that Babs seems to love Carrick and as you said that draft this year will be VERY deep and this just seems like a bad trade for the Leafs.

While the deal might be fair, I don't know why both make the deal. McLeod and Kapanen you could argue is even. But although you have given the Devils quantity.....Rychel is an AHLer, Nielsen is an iffy NHLer, Fehr is 5th liner, Soshnikov appears to be a fourth liner (and now concussed) so the trade is Carrick, and a 2nd for Severson.
