A serious Marner trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>StLHockey</b></div><div>I think Toronto has shown that having Marner doesn’t equal success. Marker doesn’t play our style of hockey, is the main reason no one wants him. Just go watch the Boston series, he’s terrified of the corners and the physical play. Fans in St. Louis think Kyrou is soft. I can’t imagine getting Marner at his price, they’d want to run him out of town.</div></div>
Hed put up 95 points and elevate Thomas to a 90 point player, after that the fans would be pretty happy

Big Deal with ST Louis
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Caniac2000</b></div><div>Aho's a really bad comparable since hes better in every facet of the game. Eichel's probably a better comparable, and this is more than that... probably an overpayment by Carolina. Neither team does this</div></div>
Eichel is not a good comparison for any trade, because there were so many contextual factors that led to that trade.
Aho and Thomas are not worlds apart from each other. Aho plays on better team and is also two years ahead in his career.
Points is they are both True 1C's and the deal above makes no sense.
In all likelihood you are trading an entire prime of a Elite 1C for Necas and probably some middle six level players.

Blues next year opening day
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>xercuses</b></div><div>I’d rather just buy him out</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Moss_Bucket</b></div><div>Yeah, I think your post about buying him out would likely be the option for St. Louis.</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>AC14</b></div><div>Would have to imagine if the Blues were to line up another trade for Krug that made sense there would be a conversation of if you don't take this we're going to send you to Springfield. I guess I get it trying to be respectful to the player the first go around. But regardless, if Army wouldn't exercise the option to waive the player to strongarm a trade, there's virtually 0 reason for him to be so strongly against NMCs and still hand out NTCs. There's alot of dialogue that that's the main reason Petro left.</div></div>
The other thing to be mindful of here is what is really the upside of going scorched earth on Krug. They need to be moving out the bad contracts and Krug certainly has one, but if you're adding around half of his cap hit as dead money (either in a retention trade or in a buyout) PLUS signing Hanifin to a big extension, you're tying up more money in your defense on veteran players than you are right now. Has that worked out well at all for the Blues over the last couple years? Signing a big UFA player into his thirties is a win-now move. You're banking on getting a few good years in which you can hopefully win a cup and then deal with the bad years later. That doesn't track with where the Blues are. They are not winning now.
I've said it a million times but it would be malpractice for the Blues to add any more veterans with significant term/money contracts until they get rid of their commitments they currently have. If you're retaining or buying out Krug, you're getting rid of some of the commitment but not all of it. If you're doing it just to open up cap space/roster spots for an additional pricey veteran? I just don't see the point.

Feeling Blues
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BDHockey</b></div><div>I would concievably move Kyrou in a trade for B. Tkachuk, but definitely not Thomas.</div></div>
Even that, different style of player obviously (and Tkachuk would obviously be more endearing to Blues fans for that reason, among others) but Kyrou and Brady Tkachuk are pretty much the same caliber of player. Good offensively (though in a way that makes you think there's always going to be another level that they just can't seem to reach) and defensively suspect. And frankly Kyrou has been perfectly good this season defensively while producing points at nearly the same pace.
Potentially more "leadership" with Tkachuk but I'm not sure how much of that reputation just comes down to "he'll fight people when they're losing".
Thomas, of course, is in a different stratosphere altogether.

Bolduc
There are other ways to extract value from a player besides trading them.
Using them to set an example for your rookies and younger veterans is another way. Yes you lose them for nothing, but you gain all they were able to teach about being a pro and dealing with tough game situations.
Holding Savard is a great example of this.

Pens
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>AC14</b></div><div>I don't really know if that helps the Blues at all or not. Our 4th line of Walker - Sunny - Toropchenko has been pretty good. I guess if we felt Toropchenko needed moved up to the 3rd line it could work. I get that the idea is to cut bait on some term on the contracts. Hayes has been fine, Saad is what he is. Very streaky, but will get to 20 goals and 40 points or so. I have no reason to care to keep either player that the Blues would move here, but i don't really see where the two returning would fit either too much.</div></div>
Pens get slightly better players, Blues get cap sooner is how I see it
Pens' best chance of being competitive is finding better fits for similar players
Blues could probably dump those two easier than Saad and Hayes given NTCs

Is this a dumb idea
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>AC14</b></div><div>I mean I personally don't see Laughton helping our current issues like Couterier could. Here's my issue with our current draft position. In the event that one of the following doesn't fall: Dickinson, Levshuvnov, Buium, Parekh, Silayev, there's alot of risk involved in what's left. The options behind that that I would deem at least the potential long-term to fill a blinding hole and play a significant spot would be: Yakemchuk (Hard to tell exactly what he is, but physical tools are definitely there), Jiricek (big injury risk and down play), Kiviharju (Again large question mark due to injuries stunting development), and then there's the ceiling concerns with Badinka, Emery and Elick.
There's alot of risk involved on both sides for sure. But having a true shutdown Center with some offensive ability would look nice to pair with Thomas. Also creates a lot more stable of an environment for our young guys to come in to as Hayes and Saad filter out of the lineup.</div></div>
Okay, well like I said, Couts is slipping out of the legit 2C tier as we speak. Laughton is basically Couts light, but a legit 3C and paid like one. But he's just an example, there's other fish in that particular sea.
As for the draft, there's little sense in placing expectations on our draft position until we know better what that will be. It could be 10, it could be 22 for all we know, but it would be monumentally dumb as an idea to trade it before we know what it is, let alone for a declining over 30 guy with 6x7.75 left.
Once we do know, I would certainly not assume that we will stay in that slot. We have the ammo to trade up and there's a bunch of teams with fat fat fatty fat D prospect pools who will be picking in that 4 or 5-10 range. It should not be much of a trick to get the right guy with our pick.
As for the D available to be drafted with our 1st, I think you can narrow your scope there. Lev will be gone. Parekh is the semi opposite of what we're looking for. Same goes for teeny tiny Kiviharju. Badinka, Emery and Elick are not good enough for this discussion. I do think you are underrating Yakemchuk a good bit. Silayev probably will be gone already, but there is a chance he drops to us somehow. Buium would be a very nice consolation price for missing out on Dickinson, who I have to think has to be the #1 target.
And I think it's attainable. And I think it is going to take a trade-up whether we make the playoffs or not. None of these guys worthy of that pick are going to fall to 14 or 16 or 18 or whatever. Army has to be proactive, like he was the summer of 2018. Like he was with Buch. We can do this! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?!??!?

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Lancebmx</b></div><div>It's the retention, that's what is the killer here.</div></div>
True to one extent, sure, but it's far from the only killer. This is an offer you try on a teardown team like Chicago or San Jose, not the Blues. Then there's the matter of quantity over quality. Leafs fans love to overrate their prospects, it's become a running thing here. While Cowan and Neimela are indeed their top F and D prospects, that's not saying a whole lot in and of itself. The Leafs have one of the shallowest prospect pools in the league, Neimela is the exact opposite of the type of D the Blues want and they already have an array of forward prospects better than Cowan. There's really nothing suitable about it, but try telling them this. We've been going through this for years now. At least back in the day they made offers of good value.
