Kicking the can down the road
Hard pass on Holtby. Samsonov is the future now. Plus he'll go out and get $10M somewhere. The absolute lowest he'd go with Washington is probably $9M and that's way too much for a 30 yo.
I like Backstorm but I'm not getting mixed into that contract. Do 4 year deal around $8.5M.
Don't need Dadonov, though I do like him.
What the hell has Johansen done to get that contract?
Fehervary, Alexeyev, and probably McMichael will be on this team by then.

Handling next year
Lists of to do for this roster:
- Don't sign Stephenson for that much, or at all. We have bottom 6 guys in Hershey that can come up for under a mill and give us the same or more.
- Don't sign Holtby at all, Samsonov is going to be a stud and he'll save us a lot of cap space for the next few years.
- Pay Siegs more.
- Give Backstrom more of a raise, at least $8 mill.
- Bring Copley back up to the NHL as the backup for Samsonov.
- Don't trade Hathaway, he's a nice player for pretty cheap and fits the bottom 6 really well. He's more valuable to us than to anyone else.
Think that's it. IMHO.

Yeah I'm hoping somewhere at West haha I don't want to face him a lot. Honestly, the team that should be all over him is CAR. They are a good/great goalie away from being true Cup contenders. I'd die if he did that though.

Gonna probably need 22 at least. Leipsic is better than Boyd or Stephenson, I think. Dowd is a center, not a winger. Stephenson is sent down to the AHL or traded for a bag of peanuts soon.

Justin braun return would be a starting point for comparable.</div></div>
You’re clueless. He’s the caps best defensive defenseman. His cap hit alone makes him 2x more valuable. He’s a top 4 with a low cap hit. Low cap hits that fill a major void are valuable. It’s not rocket science bro

Bingo. A top 4 with a cheap cap hit is worth that easily imo. Kempny missing the playoffs is arguably the #1 reason the caps didn’t advance

They are about the same tier of player, Anderson has one year left on his contract then will want to be paid like Wilson. Wilson is a great lockerroom guy and is a future captain of the team.

This is going to be an interesting season
Dowd is a good fit at 4C and is locked up for 3 years at barely above the league minimum salary, so there's no way in hell they'd trade him for picks, and there's definitely no way they'd replace him with Brouwer and call it good. Also, no team in the world would give up two picks for Stephenson, that's just nuts.

Kuzy sails away
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TanSor</b></div><div>Interesting idea, although I don't think Vancouver does it. Vancouver will need the cap space down the road to re-sign Pettersson and Hughes, especially with the way the market is trending. Horvat will also probably be their captain in the next year or two. This is my personal opinion, but I also think Horvat is the better player.</div></div>
I was looking at the Vancouver roster and Horvat being named C did cross my mind, and I would expect they value him sentimentally too, as he was one of their high up 1st rounders and came through their system. To me the trade seems fairly even, both players have their pluses and minuses. It depends on what the Caps want to replace Kuzy with, a better 2 way more consistent forward like Bo or keep the roller coaster ride that Kuzy has been the last year?
The Metro is getting tighter and tighter with both the Rangers and Devils improving quite a bit this off-season. The Caps were only 6 points from missing the playoffs entirely, you can't afford to "not care" about the regular season, or you'll find yourself out of the playoffs.

Keeping Holtby and Backstrom
I think this post shows just how infeasible signing Holtby is. The amount of moves that'd have to be made shows that there are too many moving parts, and this team is worse than this season's roster.

Bark off
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Eli</b></div><div>Usually if one guy leads his team by a ton of points, it seems like he did more of the work, because he was probably double-covered, so Stamkos getting 18 points in the 2015 playoffs is just as impressive as Justin WIlliams getting 25 in '14, when Kopitar and Carter got just as many. Similarly, I know Kuznetsov played with Ovechkin, but he also had to carry someone most of this board insisted was a fourth line right wing on any good team, on that line.
I'm more impressed that Barkov was tenth in the league in points last year than that he got a ninety point season when his linemate had four fewer points, in a year that produced three times as many ninety point seasons (14) as the previous ten year average (4.6).
My main point is the Caps aren't giving Kuznetsov away, while he's going through some hard times. They have five other centers on their roster and they'll give him a sweater as soon as he's ready.
If my value on the above trade is off by a pick or something, it really doesn't change that.</div></div>
Well the panthers are giving away barkov. Stephenson is a3rd liner tops. And Copley is a back up and will never be anything but. It’s like trading McDavid for Matthews. Both good players but one is way above the other regardless who of they play with.

Yeah, I dont think there will be a suspension, though as a Ranger fan I'm ok if there is (just kidding, I think). More likely they make him go to some kind of counseling, and if he doesn't keep up or has another incident with drugs, then they may suspend him. But hopefully it never comes to that.

A good steering wheel that doesnt fly off while youre driving
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>AFriendCalledFive</b></div><div>Does this scenario have Stephenson playing in the AHL?</div></div>
I put him there under the assumption that other teams are thinking like I am and don't see him as a viable NHL player in 2019-20 (or ever). In spite of basic and advanced metrics alike showing clearly that he had no business playing NHL minutes, he got a lot of run in Washington while never substantially improving. Add the depth free agents signed by GMBM and there suddenly isn't a place for him anymore with the big club, so I think he'd be best off as a "veteran" leader in Hershey (Stanley Cup ring in the room blah blah blah).
