Leafs 2023 2024 Season Discussion Part 7 - Shambles
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NorthernLeafsFan05</b></div><div>Bingo! The revisionist history surrounding that STL cup run is astounding. Berube sucks and hiring him would be a lateral move.</div></div>
It really wouldnt be a lateral move considering he's a better coach than Keefe when it comes to getting playoff performances
A lateral move would be Evason, Gallant, Wood, etc.
In general there is nobody out there that would be a major step above Keefe come regular season performances, its playoffs we want. Unless Sullivan or Brind'Amour magically becomes available or MLSE goes **** it and hires he who shall not be named the majority of moves are either lateral or downgrades

Good luck to them as the media will be like Vultures and he/she got a lot of work to do

Again your just excusing their underperformances blaming the coach when the fact of the matter is they also need to perform.
Starting 2024-2025 9 years these players have been here with 2 different head coaches and it has not worked
9 years is enough time to see what you have and know if its working or not. And so far what have we learned 3 or soon 4 guys in double digits is not a recipe for success

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LeafsFanForSomeReason</b></div><div>Babcock's system won Detroit a cup, let's bring him back.
You're giving Berube way too much credit. STL won the Cup on a miracle run. Huge PDO bender. They weren't some dominant team. And since then they've had about as much playoff success as the Leafs and even missed out last year. Got himself fired this season.</div></div>
Babcock should be no where near a hockey rink with his off ice creepy antics and 1950's style especially with the stories that came out his late DET dayz. That guy should be banned from the NHL
I would argue for the blues the main issue was management not knowing how to replace the guys they lost/traded away even the fans felt the same when he was let go. Like letting Pietrangelo walk because you extended Faulk who yah traded for was a what yah doing moment. Plus Binnington did fall off the face of the earth for a few years before somewhat resurging. I remember that bubble team and they could not buy a save from either guy.
He's a guy I would not mind as maybe he can whip these boyz into shape and turn them into men. Make them play like they want it especially in playoffs.
Cause yea other than him options be Boudreau (pls no), Evason, Gallant, Woodcroft, McLellan, Smith, Lambert, Queneville (people gonna hate it but he's getting a job at some point)
Maybe they can steal Brid'Amour as CAR apparently are hesitating to pay him but yea its gonna be interesting who they decide on
But of all the resume's out there Berube's is the best right now unless MLSE go **** it and sign the other guy
Now that could change if Sullivan and the Penguins decide to part ways but idk if that happens

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>RipNasty</b></div><div>Babs was a different time, they were all young players and were underdogs. You give Babs and Keefe a pass. You always give Sammy a pass and now everyone but the core is getting a pass.</div></div>
I dont give them a pass but just blamming all the problems on the coach and ignoring the underperforming players is silly
Again this team goes no where if the big boyz do not perform
Does not matter who is in net
Does not matter who you surround them with
Does not matter the coach or assistants
If they do not score and or perform we go no where
For almost 9 years TOR has built around them added, let go of and traded away players to make room for these 4 guys and so far it has not worked
Enough is enough no more trimming along the edges its time to fix the issue at the core

Every leaf fan is focusing on the big 4 and for good reason they are the one's expected to do well these playoffs and so far they have been once again underperforming
They did it with Babcock in the past to. We cant just keep blaming the coach
Under Keefe Matthews scored 69 goals in the regular season. These playoffs 1 goal in 4 GP
Enough excuses
This team has trouble scoring and these are the guys we are paying double digits to do so and they be ****ting the bed

He won STL a cup and who did he beat to get it?
BOS who still had Bergeron, Krejci, Chara, Rask and as a bonus made Marchand cry
And if management wasnt stupid letting Pietrangelo go and if Binnington didnt fall off would have probs won STL another cup
Of course he would be better. Keefe in the playoffs is a joke guy gets stuffed in a locker, his style works great in the reg but like this team falls off in the playoffs. Ducharme ****ing beat him in the playoffs lul
Woodcraft's just another Keefe. TOR needs a hard school coach who will whip these boys into shape, call them out when they underperform, and build a new culture and playstyle

Who has done anything? Blaming the core is lazy. No one produces under Keefe's system. No one has, beyond the core. Bertuzzi and Domi were supposed to be difference makers, and they haven't made a difference.</div></div>
In 4 Games the big 3 and with Willy back now have a whopping 6 points
Matthews 1 goal and 2 assists
JT 1 PP goal
Marner 1 goal and assist
6 Points and making almost 35m between the 3 of them EMBARASSING
Face it they have not been good enough. No more excuses for them
Domi and Bertuzzi havent been good enough either but they aint the focus here. The focus is the big 4 eating almost 50m of our cap and have once again **** the bed. BOS is eating them alive
In the end these are the guys being paid the big dollars, these are the guys who are expected to perform above the rest, everyone else is secondary. But so far the big 4 individually have the same amount of goals as Domi, Bertuzzi, Kampf, etc.

I can see why Berube is waiting to keep all his options open
He knows theirs a bigger opportunity waiting and when Leafs clean house on the coaching staff besides maybe Chynoweth prime opportunity for him
Chynoweth to me is the one assistant you keep as if you can bring in proper guys for this PK he can get it back to 80% again he had it there 2 seasons in a row

Ilya Lyubushkin hasn't been on for a 5v5 goal against in this series, and he's third on the team with a 58.3 xGF%.
Sums up this series but also would not mind bringing back on a reasonable deal as he has not been bad just this Dcore needs renovations
Till they can find or develop someone better would not mind a 2 year 1.5m deal for him and just slot him with MO

Sammy could have been better - maybe the series would be 2-2. But the flaws in this team are still there.</div></div>
Yep what team is winning with a 7% PP and 50% PK
Or in 10 of their last 11 cant score more than 2 goals
Game 1: 1 goal
Game 2: vs. Ullmark 3 goals
Game 3: 2 goals 0/5 PP
Game 4: 1 goal
WTF we paying these big 4 for if we struggling to score in big playoff moments. Dont matter whose in net if these guys just crumble when they meet a goalie who can stop them a few times.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>I've been a Domi supporter this season, and thought he would be a good resigning this summer. But geez, he's been penalty foolish this playoffs. Seems like he can't handle the Toronto playoff pressure.
I'm not saying Trevling is the guy that has the ability to reshape the Leafs......But having Bertuzzi, Domi, Brodie and Samsonov gone. well there is 16m to restructure the team. And the summer of 2025, 22m with Marner and Tavares gone.</div></div>
If Cap has 87.7m for 2024-2025 Leafs have 20.5m and this is with Timmins buried in the minors
They will need to extend Robertson, Liligren, Dewar all shouldnt be super expensive (My guess Dewar around 1m, Robertson 1.35m, and Liligren 2-2.5m)
Based on Brad's comments I think the focus this summer is the Dcore. I think he will explore bringing Domi and or Bertuzzi back seems doubtful with lack of funds but also I think depending if Shanahan is still around or not may be asked to talk to one of JT or Marner and go so hey do you think you would mind waiving your NMC.
Do I see them doing it no but hey its worth an ask. But yea I think this kind of retool is gonna be a 2 stage process
2024-2025 we will probs have a new coaching staff and revamped Dcore to work with. We will see what Woll is in a full starter role and see how the big 4 perform under this new system. If it works great if we see the same issue then we go to stage 2
2025-2026 move on from one of JT or Marner maybe even both and use the funds to improve the other area's. If Woll aint it go trade for a legit starter and go from there.
Going back to Dcore renovations the goal for me would be 1. To create an actual shutdown, 2. puck movement, 3. create more offense

Steve Dangle has a saying and it fits this issue with TOR
2 + 2 = 5 is what Leafs management is trying to get out of these guys
When you have so much money tied into 4 forwards these are the issues we see rn
This team has no playoff depth scoring, defense is meh, and goaltending is unpredictable
And we can go to ABC and go so why dont they fix. They cant without trying to get rid of one of them but now they got big fat NMC
That said with what we saw game 4 I think one of them may be more willing now

1) Dump the core 3 or 4 and rebuild, or
2) Re-sign the core 3, almost guarantee they will be the 3 highest scorers in Leafs history, and accept that there will be little to no playoff success.
Now all have No Trade Clauses. The decision was made - now we live with it. Enjoy the regular season - after all, it's longer than the playoffs.</div></div>
You didn't really need to rebuild
Trade 1 or 2 away and focus around Matthews
If TOR was to have traded Marner or Willy away last summer I would not be angry if they had gotten a nice return

At least Mitch got one, but it just seems like collectively, as a group, the core 4 (5?), is never clicking at the same time. Like is it really too much to ask to see us be able to score around 4 goals a night, one for Matthews, one for someone else on the core four, maybe a couple depth guys get goals.
I honestly don’t know what to think about a possible comeback. But it’s not looking too good for us, I’m not really expecting much at this point. And even if we do win this series I don’t have a lot of confidence they can win another one, let alone 3.</div></div>
