The Glorious 2017-18 Washington Capitals (2.0)
Grubauer trade makes no sense with the Darling signing. Also, solid troll job by putting Rene Bourque and Nicklas Backstrom on the same team. I appreciate it. A little too cheap for Kuznetsov, but it's much better than most of these teams. That's probably a bit cheap for Orlov too. I sort of like the Pavelec signing, but $2 million is a bit too much for me. Could just grab someone like Enroth for the league minimum.

Uniting Laine w/ his idol and create CUP caliber team through FA
Quality > Quantity, so that's not enough to get Ovechkin. There are only two NHL players involved in the deal and neither of them are impressive. Heck, you don't even include a top prospect. I don't like Stanley.
I would, however, do Trouba (assuming he's willing to sign long-term extension), Connor, and a first for Ovechkin.

Not a bad team at all. But why go with Zucker over Jonas Brodin? Not saying Zucker isn't good, but Brodin's a legit top 4 defenseman with a very nice contract.

Kuznetsov?
So a top line center for... a first round pick, a second paring defenseman at best, a sort of unimpressive forward prospect, and a decent center?

WSH could really benefit from trading the rights of these guys because they're honestly all top 6 or 7 free agents</div></div>
Can't see anyone jumping to sign Daniel Winnik. But the other guys, absolutely.

How does trading your best center for Brandon Dubinsky and Boone Jenner help you win a Stanley Cup? Also, Buffalo's moving Kane for a defenseman if they do it at all.

Money is way off on just about every signing. Orlov and Winnik are pretty close though</div></div>
Mark Scheifele is a pretty good comparison to Kuznetsov except Kuzy has a year on him. But yeah, 8 years and $6.25 million sounds about right.
The Kuznetsov signing was way off. He just had 59 and 77 point seasons he won't sign for any less than 4 million</div></div>

I don't give a crap if he helps the team get better. Honestly, Jagr did his crap well over 10 years ago. Get over it. He's very different now. Also, keep in mind Jagr is likely the reason the Caps got Backstrom and Ovechkin. Without him, Caps never embrace the full rebuild (or maybe do it a year earlier).

convincing anyone to take orpik would be one hell of a good move but think you need to plan on being stuck with him.
i believe washington should make changes but i think yours are a little bit unfair to other teams wishes</div></div>
Orpik might not be a completely nuts one. He could be "payment" for Vegas taking a lot of the Caps front office guys. Washington sure didn't raise a stink about it. Maybe taking Orpik was arranged as part of the deal for the FO guys.

This is a fun game. People get so serious and offended by these hypothetical trades, like we are REALLY GM's.</div></div>
Yeah, this was seriously fun to ponder. If the Caps do a rebuild, I want them to do an all-out rebuild. Don't half ass it one bit. 2003-04 all over again. Which would be incredibly fun with this team.

Its not even about value anymore when your talking about superstars like Crosby. Even if some team offered 10 1st rounders for Mario Lemieux at age 20, I'd still not do it. Even if it would defy logic. I'd rather keep Crosby just out of spite that no one else could have him except for me than to trade him.
That's why these fantasy trades for superstars like Crosby, etc can never be plausible and will forever just be for fun but without any substance.</i></div></div>
Agreed. The merchandising and franchise value is too great. Ironically Boston traded away probably the 2 biggest since the blockbuster Gretzky trade...Thornton and Seguin.</i></div></div>

Uh... Seguin WON a cup with the Bruins.

Optimal Team USA

Honestly though, they need more skill guys. A team can essentially plan to have a guy in Patrick Kane's face all night and then you are just left with a bunch of power forwards and Pacioretty getting yelled at. The team is built to dominate if they get up early, wearing down the other team's defense, and playing a gritty style of hockey but they clearly had no plan of attack of coming back from a deficit. At least we know Big Buff will be in there for the rest of the tournament (see 2 games).</i></div></div>
Been saying that for years. Team USA is obsessed with grit. All hope is not lost, but they'd better realize that skill and speed are infinitely better than grit soon with all the young American players.

I like this version of the team much better</i></div></div>
Thank you, I appreciate that. I hope that last night's shenanigans are enough to make Team USA's higher ups realize that speed and skill are much better to have than grit. Dean Lombardi and Tortorella both need to be held accountable for their mistakes. Ray Shero should be Team USA's next GM and I say give Bylsma a shot with a roster built around skill and speed rather than grit. PLV or Sullivan would also be acceptable choices. I'd even take Todd Richards over Tortorella.

Gaudreau doesn't have a contract, so couldn't add him. No idea what he's going to get either, so I couldn't even guess. I definitely would have added him because there are less elite left wing options than right wing. No Eichel because I don't like his expected goals against. Janmark is better defensively than him and that was the entire purpose of my fourth line. Plus bonus overages and the such.
