offszn
I would not be giving Liljegren 4.5m that would be like Zaitsev all over again.
Forsling will get more than 5m and it wont be from the leafs

Timmins
Don't think it matters. Holl will be getting a fairly sizable raise next season and Toronto is probably out of that market. Timmins is the RHD replacement who they already have and is relatively low cost. He's a long term project.

Leafs
Leafs are much better having Kerfoot and Dermot at a combined 4.9m than Dumba at 6m.

I finally understand LTIR
You are quite far off, LTIR doesnt adjust the cap. It is essentially money subtractwd from your current cap hit. However you have to look into more detail the the LTIRd contract. For example, if Marner were to go on LTIR the leafs would only get 700k in actual contract relief and 15M in bonua relief. Yes they are 2 different things.
Lets say a player with a 5M contract goes on LTIR and you are 1M below the cap, yoy dont get 6M cap space to work with now, you get about 4M. LTIR cap space is calculated by this: total cap (with LTIR players included) - league cap.
Also technically you count as being over the cap when using LTIR so you cant acrue cap space as the season progresses

I finally understand LTIR
It's not as simple as that. The cap doesn't change, and Toronto would be allowed some relief, but they're not just allowed to go over the cap by Kesler's contract value.
Toronto is allowed to replace the injured player on LTIR with another contract and receive cap relief. The cap relief is calculated each day. So let's say on day 1 of the season, Toronto was $2M over the cap with Kesler's contract on the books. So they divide that $2M by 186 days (or however many days there are in that particular season). In this example, the Leafs would receive $10,752 in cap relief for that day that they could bank and use later in the season.
As the season progresses, the amount of daily LTIR relief earned increases, adding usable cap space to the team's allowance. Halfway through the season, the team would have received $1M of cap relief. For this reason, it's preferable for teams to be as close to the cap as possible before they place a player on LTIR. That's why the team traded for David Clarkson's contract last summer when it was apparent that they might have to deal with a Marner holdout. They expected to be able to fit his new AAV under the cap using LTIR, but they weren't going to be able to afford a pro-rated cap hit for players that hold out into the season (like the situation was with Nylander). By adding Horton, they maximized the amount of LTIR relief they received, even without Marner's hefty contracts on the books.
A lot of people think that LTIR is just free cap space. It's not. It's much more complex than that and can cause issues if you don't fully understand how it works.

LEAF FANS rank these guys for Riellys RHD
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NoWah49</b></div><div>yeah? he can still play right</div></div>
Here's my "thought" on your question. Really, it shouldn't be on the RHD to be the difference maker in the RHD/Reilly pairing, it' really up to Reilly to be a better player.
Reilly doesn't play the PK because he isn't that good at it. He's average 5 on 5 when the Leaf DONT have the puck. He's good 5 on 5 when the Leafs HAVE the puck. On the PP he is very good.
Due to his defensive deficiencies/offensive recklessness, I don't think Reilly is a premier NHL Dman. The Leafs would be better if they could upgrade the right side of their defence....not necessarily just to be Reilly's partner. If the season were to start tomorrow.....would think the RHD would Holl, Dermot (both I like) and the unknown Liljegren. So a competent RHD would be welcome. The 2018/19 version of Hainsey would do just fine. But Holl has shown he can play big minutes and IMO he was the best RHD last season..better than Ceci and much better than Barrie.

Major cap drop
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>yanleg96</b></div><div>How can you be so sure about that. Tell me if im wrong but we're really close of having no playoffs at all, and if we have them if strongly think they will be behind close doors. So the NHL lose big cash here and TV contracts are almost already sign for big markets so they cant ask for more because nobody is allowed in public space so they dont make money here. This is only for 19-20 but lets say that public health departement say that no gathering up to 100 is allowed in public area until next summer to control or limit this virus, nhl will loose money again. Yeah teams have insurance for a reason but most insurance is not valid for natural disaster which a pandemic is part of so yeah i wish too that the cap wont drop but maybe it will and it will be for economic health of the league and avoid bankruptcy.</div></div>
First off, there wont be that thing happening where public health department says that no gatherings are gonna happen until next summer. Next season I hope would be normal. NHL has without playoffs revenue of at least 50% of normal season. Id argue more. 70/82 games in regular season were played NORMALLY. Playoffs generate more revenue. Thats why I said 50% of revenue of the whole normal season. Cap should go up by 50% of what it would normally go up by, but likely we would have flat cap as the worst case scenario. Not a drop. League would drop cap only if they would not play whole season or more. Lets say that gathering thing would happen and whole season would be played behind closed doors. TV revenue would still exist and it would be higher than ever because everybody would watch it. Money would be lost regardless because yeah, tickets are better source of finance.. Im not saying they arent. But at no point should there be even a discussion about dropping the cap. At worst, cap stays the same. If there is maybe war happening and there would be worse than this happening for multiple years, then maybe they wouldve dropped the cap..

if cap stays the same
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Bc44</b></div><div>I think i have done 12 gm leaf teams trying to figure this very thing out. There are 100 trades that make sense from a value for value perspective ie hockey trades. However the cap situation around the league is troubling to teams like the leafs. An extra million retained or traded can handcuff a team moving fwd. With that said i thinknthe leafs have 2 choices trade kappanen kerfoot or johnnson to a cap sapce team ie ott or njd for a pick or several picks to clear their cap to hit the ufa market strong and sign a big ticket dman . This is not ideal as this wouldnt maximize the value of these nhl caliber players. Almost a strategic salary dump scenario. Option 2 is going to be very unpopular with leaf fans and its basically do nothing major resign all your obvious guys and add 1 million dollar veteran defenceman to try and plug holes for now. This option is probably the best thing for the organization but the fan base would flip.</div></div>
The Leaf certainly haven't the worse cap situation. Other teams with NTC and are team that have trouble signing their own RFAs.
One suggestion I had was just give 3.4m Johnsson away and replace him with a 925,000 winger. Now Johnsson playing value certainly is OK but in these crazy cap situation for so many teams, the Leafs (and other teams) just might no choice. Last year the Leaf had to give up a 1st just get rid of Marleau's 6.25 cap year for one year.
I know so many folk think the Leafs Dmen are just so bad. I don't believe that. For one, the Leafs worse Dman last year Barrie will be gone. Ceci and has 4,5m cap hit is gone. Reilly, Muzzin and Dermot were all on LTIR. Reilly, Muzzin, Dermot, Sandin, Holl, Marincin and Liljegren....that's 7 at just 19.5m. Gotta think there a way to sign a competent NHLer. You're 1m solution might be the answer.
If we looked at revenues for the 2019/20 season, gee the cap should for 2020/21 should really be 70m. The owners and the NHLPA have to find a solution to the cap. Plus the NHLPA and its members will have to vote and the sharing of their share of the cap. I believe ALL salaries might be reduced. If I was betting the 2020/21 season will not start in October, and really the whole season could be lost.
