They should be a pretty good team yes, but Dallas is right there alongside them. Both have their few weaknesses, but they are my two front runners for 1st in the central. Although I would really like to see Minnesota take 1st place. That would be something haha

As long as it is 1 to 2 goal games consistently, we will be happy, and I do belive we will be loosing 5-3 and 4-2 against Tampa's and NYR's of this world.

Montreal should be very fun to watch this year. They have ALOT of young depth on D and on F. So they will have a lot of work to do, to siphon through it all. Their forward group has work to do but they have some proven talent. D is a lot more raw but they have some serious potential.
They will be scary in a few years.
Hughes has stated that they don't view this team on paper as a playoff team YET but anything is possible (it would take a miracle for the playoffs) But they are building in the right way.

Yes. Someone gets it. Montour probably coming back November they’ll be fine. Above average goaltending by and they’re a lock. Knight is coming back with a chip in his shoulder imo. Time will tell.

Just comparing the team to last season, who barely made the playoffs, it's going to difficult to make playoffs. Two key injuries with Ekblad and Montour, and toughening Atlantic division with the Sabres, Wings and Sens. Injuries for any team could make playoffs problematic.

Hard times
It all comes down to these things:
-Can Carbery get Kuz back to being a 1C and Mantha a 30G scorer?
-Can they get the PP going?
-Can they incorporate the kids?
-Can they stay relatively healthy?
If they can get all of that they are top 3 Metro team. If none of that stuff works, they are a bottom 5 team in the league.
I think Kuz and Mantha have back bounce seasons. If that happens the PP will bounce back. At that point it's just getting kids going and staying healthy.

I think it will be close between them and MTL for last place, but imo OTT has undoubtedly passed them. Especially after adding Chychrun and Korpisalo, and having Stutzle reach legitimate star status.

Bounce back
Definitely looks like a better roster than last year. Forwards look slightly better. Defense a lot better - that's a solid d core. The only place I see any regression is goaltending since Desmith is better than Ned. But a slight downgrade at backup goalie isn't that big of an issue imo.
Should be right in the wild card contention. There's going to be a lot of teams there though so it'll be a battle for sure. The more I think about it I don't think it's crazy for them to sneak into 3rd either - although I'm still not expecting it. They were essentially tied with the Rangers last year at the TDL - the Rangers just made moves to improve the team and the Pens didn't. But the Pens definitely improved more in the offseason than NYR.

As a Leaf fan....I wish the Sabres were in the Metro. You're right, Sabres are an up and coming team. Besides when the Sabres (and Sens and Habs) play the Leafs it's like the Leafs are playing the Cup winners
These teams have good records against the Leafs.

just a look at depth for bottom of lineup
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>futurebobmckenzie</b></div><div>agreed. Hajek maybe could bounce back in WBS hopefully, he’s just never really put it all together. I think that O’Connor could hopefully pot some playing full time on the 3rd line. Or we could drop one of Smith, Rust, or Rakell down, too. It’ll be interesting to see how the team shakes out this coming season.</div></div>
I'd be really interested to see how well one of the young guys could do in a top 6 role. Like Puustinen, Nylander, or maybe Poulin? Then you could drop Smith or Rust (I'd keep Rakell in the top 6). You could even try someone like Johnsson or Pitlick up there.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BestGMBenning</b></div><div>Honestly I like our bottom 6 better now. I know people are going to say it’s still a problem but I trust the growth of Drew O’Connor and Alex Nylander to end up blossoming this season. Perhaps Poulin ends up making the team as well. Rem Pitlick is also a nice piece to have in that bottom 6. Andreas Johnsson. They maybe a bunch of project type of players but they are low risk high reward add ons. I trust that Sully and the coaching staff will make our bottom 6 one of the best in the league. They have the legs, speed, defence, versatility, grit. It’ll be fun to see how they turn out. Overall depth is a bit better as well. Tomas Tatar would be amazing to have. But I don’t see it happening as the days go by and we still have the cap space to somehow clear for him.</div></div>
Cap space is our only roadblock, really. Will be interesting to see how it shakes out

If he gets 8 mill or less then they're probably fine. The cap is for sure at least going up by 3-4 million, that has been said by multiple different sources. Plus, with Carter's contract coming off next year that's more than enough to add to Guentzel's next contract.

It's Bargain Bin season. I never understood why UFA's wait all summer to sign. Teams spend their cap on July 1st and most of the money is gone. Then the unsigned players are frozen out and have to take lowball deals to stay in the league.
