Flyers No Huge Shake Ups and Someone Comes Home
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Mr_Gardoki</b></div><div>LOL If you don't think Carter has been playing well in his role this year, then you're just a hater. I was all for moving him last year and yes, he doesn't live up to his contract, but he is not playing poorly at all this year.
If you think he's been slow, then YOU have disqualified yourself from this conversation. Dude still has wheels and anyone who's watched can verify and you sir have lied through you teeth saying you've watched. You CLEARLY have not.
Again, he doesn't not live up to his contract, won't dispute that one, but he's been a solid hockey player this year.</div></div>
He is constantly behind the play and out of position. His hands still have it, and he can skate straight line speed, but he's slow to react and pivot. His only saving grace is he knows how to use his size and stick and still has hands to win faceoffs. He's had a few good games, but mostly is invisible. He would probably cost a high pick to move as OP suggested and his nmc makes him all but untradable.

I've watched every pens game and Carter is not playing better. He's slow and a liability but he's been sheltered as a face off specialist on the 4th line. Carter was 3c last year and a huge liability, he didn't get any better by turning 39. He coasts often and is noticeably slower then everyone else on the ice. He still has hands but is in no way worth his cap hit and still is a negative asset.

Off-season
No way Letang is taking only 2 years unless hes getting 8+. Malkin should be a little cheaper, I think under 8. If you don't like Kapanen, I don't think Zadina is the answer. I'd try to get Kap back cheaper or let him go for picks. Zadina looks like a bust. Mrazek has negative value, but it won't cost the leafs Robertson. Toronto laughs at that.

Next Year
Kapanen doesn't deserve 4 years, and I'd be surprised if they don't move him. He still has the potential and skillset to put up 50+ points, but hasn't developed the hockey IQ to get there. IF they don't move him, he gets 1 year in pitt to prove it, at 3 mil or less. Malkin at 5 is almost half what he is making now. He has stated he will take less, but that would be insulting. I think Malkin will sign for 3 years around 20mil. Maybe he follows Sid's superstitions and signs for 7.1. Pettersson isn't going to sniff a 2nd round pick, let alone 2 additional 3rds. He is the wrong LD to move anyways, Dumoulin has more value and is a pending UFA with declining play.

If Geno and Letang price themselves out
erod and rakell overpaid by 1mil+. 3.5 fora backup goalie is wasted money even for maf, itd be better to just keep zucker. Forsberg will probably get around 9.5x7 to leave nashville, so serious underpayment there. Agree that Dumoulin should be moved, but also letting letang walk and replacing him with Psysk? That would give pitt arguably the worst defense pairings in the nhl.

Erod over paid by about 1.5 million. If he is your 2c, this team will struggle to make the playoffs.

Free agency plus trades
Rakell isn't worth 6.5. He hasn't been at a 30 goal pace in 4 seasons. Right now he's worth 4 x 4, maybe high 4's IF he has a solid playoff. I could see Rakell taking a 1 year deal to bet on himself if Pitt brings everyone back. Kapanen deserves 2, but would get more in arbitration. Rust for 3 years will be 6+. He might take 5 for a 6 year deal with NTC. Erod should be a little less hopefully. Lets hope Letang does that, and Malkin goes 7x3 or 6x4.

pittsburgh next season start rebuild
Carter is not getting traded, after signing 2 years. They protected him in the expansion draft over Mccann and Tanev out of respect. While Pettersson has value, Zucker does not. That package makes no sense for Buffalo. Puustinen is the best fwd prospect the pens have, he would stay in a rebuild. The UFAs are all overpayments, except Rust. None of those contracts would help a rebuilding team. A rebuild is possible in 2023., but it starts with trading Jarry, Guentzel and Marino for a boatload of Picks, and filling out depth with 1-2 year contracts.

Puustinen and a 3rd is a more then fair for Hoffman, but I can't see Pitt being a good fit for another past prime top 9 forward. Hextall seems pretty intent in keeping what little forward prospects they have. Hoffman could be a fit if they can't keep Rust or Rakell.

I can't see pitt willing to sell low on Kapanen just yet. He will probably take a 1 year prove it deal with pitt. He has the potential to be much better. Eberle would be a good fit, but is redundant with Zucker for 1 more year. Also Hextall has stated he intends to resign Rakell, there would be no room for Eberle unless youre moving out Zucker, or one of the LD.

Sullivan explained it after the game. Coming into pittsburgh on a red eye flight and not even getting a practice in, they didnt wanna throw him into the fire with top 6 minutes just yet. He said he anticipates moving rakell up as he learns the system.

keeping the band together
The week before the deadline, Matheson supplanted Dumo on the 1st pair, and largely played well (aside from a few glaring mistakes) and that move was telling. I think Dumo has noticeably lost a step this year, and seems to be hitting an age decline. His perceived value could still net a decent pick or prospect. I think you give POJ that spot next year and he'll grow into the next Dumo by mid season.

Blueger is highly underrated, a solid 2 way 3c playing as 4c on a deep team for 2.2 mil. With that being said, this still tips in the pens favor.

Friedman adds scrappy new element to the penguins
Friedman definetly adds some fresh legs and energy to this team. If he played every game, this would probably taper off, but I definetly like what I see. I think the pens would be smart going forward by giving friedman some extra games and shifting around the d pairs to give guys like dumo and pettersson a break too. The most concerning thing about the d has been watching dumos play drop and almost to a point where he is a liability out there. Letang should be playing a few less minutes also to keep his turnovers to a minimum. Letang is best when he reads the play and pinches with perfect timing. If hes a split second off, its an odd man rush the other way that weve seen waaay too many times. Having Friedman come in fresh and prove he can take some hard minutes from these guys is going to serve the pens well for the playoffs.

The pens don't need another depth dman or middling prospects. Kap needs to be moved but as a package for a better 2rw.
