What could/should have been damn it!
I agree that this is a way better team.
Although Markov wouldn't have signed for less than 3 years. He was asking for 4 years at 8M$/year before Bergevin told him to go play in Russia.
Furthermore, the salary cap situation for the next season would be really tight (a little over 11M$ in cap space) with a lot of re-signing and/or free agency to do.

Fixing Montreals Mess
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quote:</div>How does it not? You get rid of Jeff Petry's whale of a contract and replace it with 2 solid puck moving defenceman. The james neal trade maybe a hit or miss but it hes the type of person Tavares would strive to play with, and it gives MTL the scoring depth they want</div>
Tavares? You do realize that he's not with MTL right now, and probably never will be... Right?
Also, Ceci isn't worth that much. Change the 1st for a 2nd, and that makes more sense.
Furthermore, VGK would never agree to that trade. You would need to send another prospect that is worth way more than Morrow or De La Rose.

No way that BUF takes those contracts (Benn, for example).
Furthermore, WSH won't accept that 3-way trade unless MTL gives them more, since they would be losing so much just for Pacio (De La Rose isn't going to amount to anything).

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quote:</div>You're right but he's very skilled maybe he could turn his career around. Like Kovalev did a couple years back.</div>
Really? Kovalev is your example here?
Sorry, but Ryan is after his peak. For a guy that played alongside Perry and Getzlaf in Anaheim for so long, it's not surprising that he didn't score as much after he moved.
MTL has a history of giving guys like Ryan a "Second chance" and it has never worked.
Furthermore, why the hell would TB trade a 2nd round pick to MTL for a 6th?

Buffalo selling
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Shibbal18</b></div><div>Definitely not enough, the sabres should be looking at getting a+ prospects that are in the nhl or can step in immediately, theyre trying to avoid another complete rebuild. 2nds and prospects that are a couple years away do not help them. Pacioretty is nice but he's possibly on the down side of his career, has only a year left, and is going to be looking to get paid.</div></div>
Pretty much sums it up.
Also, Plekanec isn't worth a 2nd round pick, even as a rental.
Furthermore, you can't trade picks and add conditions regarding a player that was already traded in the past (Sergachev). Nor can you send picks on the condition that the other team makes the playoffs or not. No GM in their senile minds would ever agree to that.

Buffalo selling - next year
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>wojme</b></div><div>Easy no from the sabres. Overvaluing an expiring pace as usual.</div></div>
That pretty much sums it up, but I would like to point out that Jerabek (Unless he comes back to MTL to finish the season and breaks every record) isn't worth 2.5 M$. I would say 1.8 max for 2 years.
Danault getting 3.9 M$ for 6 years is a huge risk, too. His production is not consistent enough to guarantee that kind of contract. With the addition of O'Reilly (If this scenario is conceivable), Danault becomes less of a need for MTL.

The Sbisa trade, I could see that happening, but the Seguin trade, no way. DAL won't let him go for that cheap and Maata is a good playoff defense men for PIT.
Plus, no way that Seguin would accept to be traded to play on the third line in PIT, when he has 1st line opportunities in DAL.

No way Pittsburg would agree to that, they are on a conquest for a third cup.
Also, the addition of Hagelin and Maatta would worsen the salary cap situation for next year. We won't survive with 15M$ during the re-signing and free agency phase in the summer.

Habs would lose big time on the long term with that OEL trade. Add Duclair and a 4th round pick in 2018 and that would be more of equal value. Only thing is; Arizona won't want all those additional contracts to pay (they are on a low budget).
Furthermore, Bennett won't go anywhere. Calgary will keep him and send off Backlund as soon as his contract ends. I would ask for Backlund (If he signs a prolongation contract right away) and offer something else instead of Lekhonen

Yeah, so to repeat what everyone already said; he'll go through waivers.
Thing is tho, I wouldn't exactly pick him up and play jom on the first line. He's noted as a player with a lack of discipline. Could be a distraction in the locker room more than anything else.

Maybe if the leafs trade Horton and Kessel's contracts to Arizona in order to make some room on the cap space.
Otherwise, Mike Green won't be worth 12M for 3 years when he's 34...

As he said, Sakic would never let go of Barrie and Duschene for what you are offering. Maybe Petry instead of Scherback and switch the 1st round pick for a 2nd (2019).
Then, trade Plekanec and Shaw (both salary retained, 20% at least) for Leddy, cancel the 2nd round pick and add a 4th from New-York.
Other than that, the Chucky trade makes sense.
Cheers!

2018-19
Few things I would change:
Alzner for a 5th round pick is basically giving him away. Bring that up to a 3rd and that makes more sense.
Kreider and Skjei are not going anywhere. The Rangers definitely want to keep them, since they are younger than Pacio and Benn. I know that Pacio is kind of going nowhere and that his peek might be already past, but you don't trade him for somebody who scores less than him.
Furthermore, Chucky for Girard and Smith doesn't make sense for both teams. Nashville would not be interested in Chucky and Montreal doesn't need another Left-handed D prospect (They already have Mete). Even worse, Smith would just be another plumber moving from the 4th to the 3rd line.
Last thing: Your title says 2018-2019, but you seem to have created the team in the 2017-2018 timeframe. There is an option when you create a team that allows you to begin on July 1st of the next season.

Disregarding the trades (which makes no sense at all), the defense would be even worse than what it is right now...
Petry with Alzner on the first pair? I would bet a million dollars that Raanta would have a GAA above 3.5 before November.

What to do about the salary cap next year?
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>I really can't see those trades. Teams aren't going to willingly to take on all that cap. Sekera has a NMC, do you really think he would now want to move from a top contender? And Jersey would know that there is limited amount of teams he would want to be traded to, they wouldn't offer so much. I imagine Calgary wants their cap to sign Backlund not to trade for RHN. Right now I wonder if the Arizona really wants to give up on Strome.
Pouilet, it might be a fake cap hit, but I believe it's really money.</div></div>
New Jersey can afford Sekera, and Bastian isn't even close to Sekera in terms of trade value (even considering Sekera's injurie). Furthermore, this edit is a scenario where we jump all the way to before July 1st, 2018, without looking at the current season (2017-2018). Hence why I think Sekera would consider moving to NJ (They are becoming a force in the East).
Calgary won't resign Backlund if they don't make the playoffs this year (since he is a UFA). He's gonna want to move to a better team. Getting RNH to replace him makes sence for them since they are still rebuilding and RNH is younger.
Arizona might not want to lose Dylan, but they are getting nowhere with their prospects. They need more prime-aged guys to support. Plus, trading two brothers would get them media attention (which they really need rn), for a 0$ cost in marketing...
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>StammerTime</b></div><div>I don’t think you can trade buyouts</div></div>
Talking about that; Yes, you can definitely trade buyout contracts and Long term injury reserve contracts. Since Chayka has taken office in Arizona, they have acquired a bunch of these plus draft picks in exchange for low value players (look at the Pronger, Bolland and Ribeiro contracts...) That gives them room on the minimum cap space (58m) and allows them to play young prospects on entry-level contract and still make the minimum cap.
Cheers,
C4

Just like palhal said, trades don't come by that easily, although negociating rights for RFAs aren't as pricey as a player with a signed contract.
Maybe trade some offense like Brokovsky to get a good Lefty defense alongside trouba.
Also, why get Aberg if you don't put him in the line up?

Kidding aside, the Caps' cap space is something to worry about. Make the Habs retain some of Chucky's salary, and that's a win-win!
