Would NYI do this
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Feelers4Ehlers</b></div><div>I rather have Pageau because he is a right shot centre. He could play right side and have Perfetti play centre. But if that doesn't work out then move Perfetti to the left side and find another RW. If there needs to be an upgrade would NYI have any interest in trading for Dobson if Connor is in play? Pulock locked in long term already and Dobson will probably want the same or more when his current contract is over.</div></div>
Connor was a 0.94 PPG player this year as a winger; Dobson was a 0.89 PPG player as defender. There would have to be much, much more value coming back to New York in that kind of trade.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Subbanator7667</b></div><div>He's a 40 point center making 5 million and is 31 years old, on a contender, he's most definitely a 4C and will be that for the rest of his career. That's not a bad thing, he's just over paid and a team taking him on has to know that's his role</div></div>
Pageau's a 3C/PK1 on nearly every team in the league; Pulock has been a 20-22 minute guy for the last 6 years on a team generally regarded to be a strong defensive squad. I think the value here is more or less even, with the Isles maybe needing to add a little more - to me, it's about two teams trading to fit needs. Winnipeg gets two strong defensive players who are not necessarily black holes offensively, while New York gets two more offensive-minded players to try and achieve their lifelong dream of scoring more than 2 goals in a playoff game.

time for change
let's look at this deal.
on one side, you have:
-Brock Nelson, one more year left at $6M AAV. He's scored 107 goals in the past 3 seasons, averaging a 37-34-71 line per 82 GP. He's been a good playoff performer in his career, with a 27-23-50 line in 78 career playoff games. He's generally regarded as one of the better 2Cs in the league.
on the other side, you have:
-Nick Abruzzese, a soon-to-be 25 year old with 11 career NHL games under his belt who did not manage to crack the Leafs' NHL lineup once this year;
-Calle Jarnkrok, a career 30-35 point type guy who turns 33 before Opening Night and still has 2x$2.1M left on his deal;
-Connor Timmins, a guy who has been the 7th/8th D on Toronto for the past two seasons;
-a late 4th-round pick
Would -you- take this deal if you were the one giving up the useful player?

My question is, what team is giving up a 3rd rounder for Calle Jarnkrok at 2x$2.1M when they could just as easily save the pick and spend about the same amount of cap space on a similar UFA forward this summer? Guys like Stefan Noesen, Teddy Blueger, Kiefer Sherwood, & Jordan Martinook are all UFAs this summer, are all younger than Calle, and all profile similarly as bottom-6 forwards who can defend and score 35ish points in a season. You could just as easily throw 2x$2M at any of those guys and likely bring them on board with no acquisition cost.

Why I like these moves
Giving up a 1st for Robertson and Lilljegren doesn't make sense for the Islanders. Lilly doesn't fit a need - their RHD depth chart right now is Dobson-Pulock-Mayfield, and even if you think he's better than Mayfield currently is, well, that guy's got 6x$3.5M left on his deal and isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Robertson is a 5'9" winger with a long injury history who barely saw the ice in the playoffs. Neither of these guys fills a roster hole that would justify giving up the team's first 1st round pick they've held on to (so far) since 2019.

Getting Serious
I don't think the Isles trade is in the realm of possibility. You have the optics of trading your current captain, the one who replaced the guy who left, for that very guy who left, along with trading a pair of guys who fit the team's lunchpail identity for a guy who has never given off that kind of vibe. I think the trade makes the Leafs worse on paper, for what it's worth, too.
Beyond that, you've got a deal with 5 players here and 4 of them have full NMC/NTCs and Pageau has a 16-team NTC. The odds of getting all 5 of these guys to sign off on this move seems slim to nil.

Kent Hughes Realistic 2024 Offseason
Based on trade value charts, the deal seems fair - #18OA for #26OA & #78OA works out to a slight overpay on the Shuckers' chart and a slight underpay Dom@theAthletic's chart (I will -never- remember how to spell that last name.) Adding Struble makes this deal a win for the Isles in a vacuum.
But since we're not in a vacuum and we have to look at each team's needs, I think the Islanders decline. They have LD1 & LD2 set, so Struble is at best a 6th/7th D on this team - not a position that you would want to really target, especially when you have a pending UFA on your roster who has proven to be a good fit in that spot, and who probably won't cost much more than Struble's cap hit next year. Add in the fact that nearly every major publication ranks the Islanders' farm system in the bottom 5 of the league, with not a ton of NHL-projected talent in the pipeline, and I'd say I'd rather go ahead and keep the higher value pick and get a player more likely to be an impactful NHL player.

Leafs Offseason
-Feels like a huge undersell on Marner. McBain is a solid checking center, nothing more; Ingram had a decent year this year but his track record is literally 77 games long at this point, so he's far from a proven commodity. The 1st is a year away and honestly, probably winds up being a late lottery pick at best (I assume adding Marner makes them an 80-85 point team) and a pair of 2nds. Utah jumps on it.
-Isles pass on this one - Robertson's injury history makes him a concern, and I think I'd want something less volatile giving up that 2nd rounder.

-Horrible deal for the Leafs. Sanheim is a fine player, so is Farabee; but Marner is a franchise-level player. I might be able to see the logic in Farabee/Sanheim/2nd for just Marner; the fact that you're adding in one of the Leafs' best prospect in Minten plus Robertson and a pick makes this deal A W F U L for the Leafs.
It's not trading a dollar for 4 quarters; it's trading a 5 dollar bill for a pair of quarters and a nickel.
On the other hand, I'd argue that both Kampf and Jarnkrok wouldn't be trade targets for the teams you have acquiring them here (Sharks already have Nico Sturm doing what Kampf does, and the Isles don't need another bottom-6 forward). Value isn't awful but looking at who's signed for 2024-25, I don't see any reason thy these teams would make those deals.

I think if they could get Lee 50% retained he would be a nice fit on the penguins. He's the one older player I would be ok with them brining in, because of his style of play. He's gonna have a future like Maroon eventually. Always able to find that 4th line role if he wants it. Sill is there, and the physical play is there too.</div></div>
Lee is one of those hard to value guys because he's the team's captain - he's scored 20+ goals in 8 out of the last 10 seasons (only a mediocre sophomore season and an injury-shortened 2020-21 had him under 20) and he's a community leader in addition to being the locker room leader. I think that Lee has a spot on the Island til his contract runs out; that being said, I see the value here and it's something I would personally think long and hard about.

I honestly think a Kaliyev/Wahlstrom deal is a great idea for both sides. Both players have untapped potential but aren't going to get it where they are now; I think it's worth it for the Kings & Isles to take a swing at seeing if those guys can turn it around in a new place.

I mean, I don't fully disagree, but it's worth mentioning that the players you listed here are former #1, #1, #10, #4, and #3 overall picks. Rantanen is kind of the exception to the rule there - you can easily point to guys like Scott Glennie, Dylan McIlrath, Zach Hamill, Nikita Filatov, Olli Juoelvi, Lias Andersson, Michael Dal Colle, Griffin Reinhart, Vitali Kravstov, and so on as guys drafted in that #4-10OA range that completely flamed out.
I mean, hell, if you wanna do the "redraft" gimmick for the names you mentioned, it's worth mentioning that Hyman is 10th overall in goals scored for his draft class and Lehkonen is 25th overall in his class for overall scoring - you could make a strong argument that if you go back in time and draft those years all over again with the knowledge of how they've both turned out that both guys would be borderline lottery picks at worst. I get what you're saying about the type of player you want to get with a lottery pick, but the truth is anything outside the top 2/3 picks has a pretty decent chance into turning into nothing.

Yeah, I think a soon-to-be 25 year old middle 6 forward with a lengthy injury history who's scored at a 57 pt/82 GP pace over the past two seasons (110 GP) is worth the same as a 24 year old RHD who's also matched that 57 pt/82 GP pace - except he's done it over the past 3 seasons while averaging 79 GP per year.

Finding Prospects
-The Marner cost is a little heavy but I don't think it's incredibly outrageous. It's Marner + a B-tier prospect for a late 1st, an A-tier prospect, a B-tier prospect, and a pair of roster players for cap ballast - adding Kurashev here pushes it over the edge for me, though.
But, as Hawks fans have said - why would Chicago do this now? I don't think adding Marner makes them an instant playoff contender (although it gets them closer) - and if Marner's testing UFA next summer, why not keep this package and make a run at him in July 2025 instead?
-Doesn't make a ton of sense for San Jose here. I'd rather have Muk + his upside than Benoit at this point - no shade towards Benoit, but you basically know what he is. Muk showed some strong offensive in the AHL this year and I'd want to see how that might develop over turning a 6th into a pair of 5ths.
-Absolute no from the Isles. Dewar is a bottom-6 grinder (something they don't need more of), Liljegren isn't the defensive player that Pulock is so wouldn't be a good replacement (and needs a new contract), and Moldenhauer is more of a wild card than a sure thing prospect. I don't think the Leafs have the assets to make a Pulock trade work.
-Coyotes are not trading their starting goalie for a middle-6er and a smaller prospect who just missed the entire season with a shoulder injury.

Offseason and Next Year
-It's fine value for Kovacevic but I think TML would probably keep the pick and sign a Jani Hakanpaa-type for a similar cap hit.
-I don't really see a spot for Dvorak on the Isles, even with the retention. They already have JG Pageau as a 3C who can score 35ish points, which would mean that Dvorak would be a 4th liner making $3M on next year's Islanders team. Just don't see a reason to give up a pair of mid-round picks for that.
-Dallas takes this deal and runs before you can change your mind. Dellandrea might have some untapped upside but giving up a late 1st is overkill for him.
-Probably a round too high of a value for Harris; I also think he's worth keeping around as depth considering the D-corps you've built here has two vets (Savard & Matheson), a guy with a year and a half's experience as a top-4 guy (Guhle), another with a year and a half's experience as a 6th/7th D(Xhekaj), and two guys with a combined 3 NHL games under their belts. Harris isn't a stud but he's a useful middle pair guy and I'd rather have him around than worry about all three of Xhekaj/Mailloux/Hutson coming out of the gates next year as fully formed NHLers.

Lou is old school enough that I feel like the in-division cost to move Pelech would be astronomical - you would hate what you'd have to pay there. I'd think a 1st + POJ is the starting point with more needing to be added.
I'd also be confused as to why a team with a pretty pricey top 4 (Karlsson, Letang, Pettersson, Graves) would be looking to add another expensive LHD like Krug or Pelech - you're gonna wind up with a $4M+ third pair guy, which is not something you really want to do if you're trying to build up a deep playoff team.

I honestly don't hate this trade. Pulock is basically RD2 now with Dobson being a guy I can see getting a handful of Norris votes this year; if we can swap him out for a young, top-6 forward like Perfetti while also getting someone to backfill RD2 for a year, I think it's a good deal. I'd think about swapping Nate Schmidt instead of Pionk, for two reasons: first, hoping that it makes it appetizing enough to Winnipeg to drop the 3rd from the Isles side; second, I think Schmidt replicates what the Isles would be losing with Pulock better than Pionk does. But that's a minor quibble at this point.

I have no idea what Im doing lol
-I think the retention is just too heavy here. I get that it doesn't make sense for the Kings to take Binnington at $6M; but I also think they could find a goalie of similar caliber for less of a package. Maybe you call up Vegas and see if they'd be willing to clear Adin Hill's $4.9M now that Logan Thomson looks capable of being a #1 on a sub-$800K deal. Maybe you talk to Barry Trotz and see what you'd have to add to this to get Juuse Saros. Maybe you just keep Cam Talbot (2.46 GAA/.915 SV%) and offer him the $3M you'd be paying Binnington here. Whichever way you go, I think there are much simpler and/or cheaper options for the Kings to pursue - paying for that much retention just doesn't make sense to me.
-I could see the Panthers doing this but I also think they have more pressing needs - this summer they've got just over $20M in space with 7 F / 5 D / 2 G signed. D-wise, they've got a top pair (Ekblad/Forsling), a #4/5 type (Mikkola), and a pair of #6/7 types (Balinskis/Bjornfot.) I think they probably focus on the forward group first and settle for a top-heavy D corps if they run out of space - I also think 3 years of $3.25M is a ton of money to eat for a mere 2nd round pick on the Blues side of the equation.
-I am super intrigued by this deal, honestly. Ballparking the draft pick value basically has Vancouver giving up the equivalent of a mid/late 2nd round pick, in addition to Podkolzin (change of scenery needed) and Wallinder and they upgrade Mikheyev into Buchnevich with 50% retention. Canucks turn a 30 point middle-6er into a 65-70 point top line winger while saving $1.875M in 2024-25; St. Louis gets a little extra draft capital and a good prospect in return.
Really depends on where Vancouver thinks they are. If they think their window is right now, I make the move - you're giving up on a guy who could be a big deal but is still 2-3 years away from being in the NHL. Buch is still young enough that you could give him a JT Miller extension and get good value out of it; I honestly think it's a worthwhile gamble. I think it's a pretty solid deal for both sides.

75 goal differential offseason
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jonh514</b></div><div>Not opposed to higher AAV shorter term deals! Yours was the fist positive comment in 2 pages. Thanks!</div></div>
I mean, it makes sense. If you can dump Anderson and bring guys like Armia & Gallagher out of the top 6 and into more appropriate roles based on their production, I think you have something here.
I don't know if this team is good enough to swing the goal differential by 75 goals, but barring any other moves the Habs 2nd through 4th lines next year probably look like:
Gallagher - Newhook - Dach
Armia - Evans - Anderson
RHP - Dvorak - Pezzetta
To me, you've got Brendan Gallagher in over his head on that 2nd line, and then you've got two checking lines behind that. Adding Stephenson & Monahan while subtracting Anderson really shifts that middle 6 towards being more productive - and seeing as how you've still got nearly $12M in cap space with this team now, I think bumping up their combined AAVs around $3M is worth it. Like you said - there's no one in Laval really pushing to be in the lineup next year. The best scoring U25 players on the Rocket are Xavier Simoneau (5'7" center who somehow has 111 PiMs despite only fighting once this year) and Sean Farrell (5'9" winger who looked out of his depth at the NHL level last year and probably needs another year of seasoning at this point.) You're not holding anyone back by giving those top-6 spots to productive veterans.
