What you aren't considering is that neither Pittsburgh nor Carolina have the cap space to make it happen at this moment. Anaheim's trade makes that happen. Even if Carolina trades Pesce, that only opens $4.xm of cap space, leaving CAR with between 6-7m.
What can SJS reasonably ask for a 33-year-old offensive defenseman who doesn't defend, especially when only two parties are interested and San Jose is reluctant to eat a notable portion of his salary? It's not like we're getting a 24-year-old EK65, glorious on both offense and defense and in his prime. EK65's window coincides with PIT's.

You need to hit the cap floor. Troy Terry is going to run the first chance he gets to go contend.
Pickering and POJ were both first-round selections. They might not be blue-chip stars, but POJ is solid defensively and Pickering has some notable offensive upside.
As far as I'm concerned, it's a better return considering where Anaheim is than what WPG got for PLD or what OTT got for DeBrincat. Could the 2nd turn into a 1st if the Pens win the cup? Sure, why not.

Not a chance the Penguins (who have Casey DeSmith under contract) take on Vladar for a 3rd and 4th.

Pittsburgh accepts without thinking twice.
We send away pick 14, acquire pick 42... send out all of the dead weight. Enjoy hometown boy Petry (who still isn't bad but the wheels are close to falling off) but sorry about Jeff Carter and Mikael Granlund.

Pittsburgh has SEVEN NHL Defensemen, and we're going to pay you two picks for an over-the-hill, overpaid Luke Schenn? Not to mention that we're already up against the cap. Hard no.

Oh, Pittsburgh will gladly trade you Kapanen. And Pittsburgh will retain. But if you're asking us to be on the hook for $1.6m, it better be better than a 3rd.

Pittsburgh hangs up before you can finish "Luke".
We have Ty Smith in the minors right now because the defense is a logjam. Further, draft capital is very valuable at this stage. The only available Canuck I'd burn picks on is Horvat (EDIT: wanna part with Hoglander? Him too.) , because I'm not sure that Jeff Carter is even a WARM body at this stage in his career.
Take Kapanen, Ty Smith (out of mercy for the player who is far, far better than an AHL guy) and a second for Horvat. Two young players with bounds of talent who could be retained for cheap. Keep Schenn or send him to Arizona. Pittsburgh can't take on that cap nor do they need another aging defenseman.
Trade Schenn and Boeser to the great beyond and Vancouver's cap jam disappears.

Josh Anderson would be an upgrade to the Penguins' bottom six. Any warm body would. But the fact is that the Penguins only have pennies of cap space. You'd be taking a contract back, and we wouldn't be giving up a first-rounder. That could get us a far better player than Anderson.

You guys hold on to Tierney and Jaros. Despite putting up a modest amount of points, Tierney is a possession nightmare and while Jaros is young, he doesn't look far better. We'll give you Murray (If it were me) for just your lowest second round pick.
We send you Jack Johnson... you do whatever with him. Play him, scratch him, buy his contract out. Use him for cap floor purposes. (Murray + Johnson will probably be in the $8m-$10m neighborhood.)
Deal? Deal.

Memories
Why do the Penguins do this? Like, why in gods name would they even consider this? Noah Hanifin and what should be a fourth round pick?
Bryan Rust, as far as top six wingers go, is one of the best values in the league. He’s got term, so he’s going for at least a first. And we’re retaining?
Marcus Pettersson is very steady and the Penguins have no reason to move him.
Matt Murray is going to be traded but if all we’re getting back for a top 6 winger, a very steady second pairing D, and a starting goaltender is a top pairing D-man and the last or second to last third round pick in the draft, you’re insane.

...so wait, you're telling me that for Zucker--who we want, and who would likely be had for Bjugstad and a first-round pick, and Brodin, who is average at offense but awful at defense (career CF% of 48.2 and career 49.2 FF%)...
you want us to pay a first round pick, two of our top three prospects, and a top-six winger?
And you're doing next to nothing for our cap relief? No Galchenyuk, no Jack Johnson? Jim Rutherford sends you an invoice for time wasted

If Pit is including its top defensive prospect as well as a first, Toronto will need a time machine to get 24-year-old Jake Muzzin back and the Leafs are eating Jack Johnson's contract in return.
