Graviteh Trades for Timo
I don’t think these are terrible proposals…
As a Sabres fan I would counter with the following…
1) I’d really rather not deal Kulich.
Ostlund or Rosen would definitely be available. Both 1st rounders. Rosen is closer but is strictly a wing. Ostlund is much more likely to be a long term center but will take time to develop properly.
2) If you want a goalie, take out Neuchev, add Portillo.
3) I’d rather keep the Philly 2nd rounder. Could we sub in one of Mittelstadt or Olofsson? Or a different prospect, Buffalo has loads of forward prospects available.

A bit more than I’d like to give, which probably means it’s a good deal for both sides</div></div>
Honestly, my belief is that if they go for a defenseman it’ll be a lefty. Lybushkin & Jokhiharju both have time left on their deals and I think the Sabres like both, but especially Jokhiharju, more than the fans do.
Adding Chychrun to the left gives you someone who can eat big minutes if someone like Samuelsson or Power or Dahlin get banged up. And while he’s not great on his right side, he can do it. I also wouldn’t be surprised to see Power be very successful on his off-hand if need be, similar to Dahlin.
Honestly I put it he pairs the way I did bc that’s how most people see it. But I’d put Chychrun with Lybushkin on the 3rd pair. Give him some big PK minutes and let him work some PP2 minutes, but allow Dahlin to go from 26min to 24min power from 23 to 21 and eat 20min or so a night himself.
I also don’t believe Chychrun is the only option here. I also don’t believe they’ll actually do this deal and that they’ll wait to see what Ryan Johnson does before doing anything to their D-corps.

Chychrun is a D signed to a reasonable contract for 2more seasons.
Meier is a wing, who is due big $ and a new deal within about a year.

rumors true
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>csick</b></div><div>Sounds like Krebs is running out of room as well</div></div>
I wouldn’t say that necessarily. Early in season they wanted to give Cozens and Mittelstadt opportunities at center behind the Thompson line, both being older, more established, but still young players. Cozens took his opportunity and ran, Mittelstadt foundered s bit, but found success with Olofsson when paired with Jost off of waivers…
Inevitably this left Krebs “stuck” centering Girgensons & Okposo. But I really believe this has allowed Krebs’ game to really develop. He can carry the puck but has not become adept in a dump & chase style. He can play with less offensive players and play more of a 200ft game… and he’s developed a REAL feistiness that a young team like this needs. He gets out there and likes to stir the pot and seems to have the respect of a lot of the other players for how he handled that situation.
On the roster right now, my long term keepers at forward are:
Skinner-Thompson-Tuch
Peterka-Cozens-Quinn
Krebs
He’s a long term top-9 forward who I believe will get a decent but not over the top 2nd contract and will be able to fit in long term.

Out of those 4 I think I’d rank them (most coveted to least coveted)
1. Kulich- 18yrs old and already in the AHL and plays a very mature game.
2. Savoie- has slipped in his raw #’s this year, but is a top end talent that can add an element the Sabres could use long term.
3. Rosen- Potential Olofsson replacement long term imo.
4. Ostlund- smart heady player but might I just don’t see him being a big time player.

Would definitely need to be. Also, any chance we could flip Johnson out for Mittelstadt? Arizona has plenty of Cap Space but Mittelstadt is still relatively cheap ($2.5AAV thru 23-24) and is a center.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BUFF36</b></div><div>I would think if that 1st is Top 10 protected Buffalo does that trade.</div></div>
I agree overall, but would like to pair Johnson as an asset in a secondary deal on Buffalo’s end for a goalie, which they need… desperately.

Why not
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>Assuming the Sabres finish out of the playoffs, should the Sabres be giving up futures for two years of Chychru? Plus he is a LHD which the Sabres have plenty. Keep Dahlin and Power, Samuelsson on the left side.</div></div>
I understand the perspective but I’d throw a few arguments the other way;
1) Dahlin plays better on his off hand imo, and has great chemistry with Samuelsson. I want that pair to be our top pair for 15yrs.
2) Power is still so young and I don’t think it would hurt to be able to limit his minutes a bit, adding a piece like Chychrun allows that.
3) Chychrun played in Arizona with Lybushkin so should have some chemistry there to start with.
4) can never have enough talent on the back end.
5) cheap deal with two additional years
6) Sabres have an immense amount of depth in their prospect pool. Dealing 1-2 pieces that aren’t Savoie/Kulich/Rosen/Levi is a solid deal. Also, they have too many forwards in their pool and will need to offset that at some point by either trading for nhl defensemen,
Or trading those forwards for picks or defense prospects.

As someone who is a Sabres fan, I think it’s a good strategy for Chicago. But they need to follow through.
Kane & Toews gotta go. ‘23 class strong st the top. Hope for a top-3 pick and enough ammo that if you like Bedard you can go get him and make that jump.

Finding a goalie prospect
As a Sabres fan I would say management has spoken highly of Levi. That along with the deal he was a part of, shows how much they like him.
We also have a dearth of goal talent overall in the organization. Likely won’t trade away a goalie at all.
Straight up value isn’t far off, but Buffalo doesn’t have a reason to (and has reasons not to) do this type of deal.
They will try to trade or sign at least one nhl level goalie and if they don’t retain Subban, 1-2 AHL goalies as well,

Agree with this. I think one of the defenseman should be a capable veteran. And maybe one more veteran winger, but they have a ton of youth to develop up front. Depending on the draft they may have a guy like Wright, Savoie, etc they could have almost too many young forwards at the NHL level.

As a Sabres fan myself I think it fits fair value. Turcotte & Kaliyev are an A & B prospect respectively, Kempe is a big, speedy winger aged 25, and the 1st is a 1st.
Meanwhile the kings get a guy who can be there for the last years of Kopitar, and the 1st few years of Byfield’s ascension

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Stanley_Cup_To_Manhattan</b></div><div>How are we going to afford his $4.25M cap hit?</div></div>
Reinhart and Olofsson could be brought back on 1yr deals. Let’s say that saves $2M.
Deduct 700K from Howard and you’re up to $2.7M.
Mittelstadt will get like 200K less, so you’re up to $2.9M
Plus the $1.25M you have in space already, and you’ve got $4.15M in cap space.
Trade away Montour or Miller and you’ve got at least another $3.75M in cap space.
That’s a total of $7.9M.
You could trade for Raanta and bury Hutton in Rochester and still be ok.
The key is finding a home for Montour or Miller.

Agreed. And I think that’s what the OP is saying. Competitive, not playoff guaranteed. And it depends on how things play out through the season.
Also, I don’t think they’re done. I believe they want to get one if Montour/Miller out, and add a LHD and Goalie to tandem with Ullmark.
