<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>pensfan21</b></div><div>Because you need youth and prospects to win the cup. That's part of the reason we've been declining, because we have no young talent to infuse into the lineup and the young talent we did have Hextall traded them away. We are not going to win the cup just signing a bunch of free agents and trading the 1st for a goalie. That's not how you build a cup winning team. We need to get extremely creative and find a way to get younger. Trading away our highest draft pick in years is not going to fix this team. We need to get young through the draft and through trades not involving the 1st if we can, and if we are extremely lucky then these players can help Crosby Malkin and Letang at the tail end of their careers.</div></div>
That's just insanely silly thinking. You are absolutely 10000% wrong. You win the championship with established players. Sometimes you get lucky and a young player turns out to be amazing but they are FEW AND FAR BETWEEN. Montreal has to be one of the youngest teams in hockey, how'd they do? How did the young devils do? How did the young leafs core, the young oilers core? The young canucks?
That's just non knowledgeable hockey fans. Fans who just read their favorite blogger, watch the games and parrot them. If the penguins use the 14th overall pick this year to choose a player - they have slammed their window shut. You just resigned Rakell, Rust, Letang & Malkin. You've made a commitment to the core. They will not be around in 6-8 years when this 14th overall pick is an impact player in the NHL. You trade these prospects and picks for players who CAN PLAY. Not for players WHO SAME DAY MIGHT BE ABLE TO.
Do you know what happens when Sidney Crosby calls it a career, likely in 5 more seasons? This team crashes and burns. There is not a retool opportunity, there is no small rebuild. It's to late for that. In 5 years, you move on from everything that has value, you tear it all down, and you start over. There was an option to have this team setup for a post crosby era, Jim Rutherford chose not to go that route & than Ron Hextall chose to do NOTHING but crush the teams competitive window since.
Someday you'll get it, go back and watch the 2003 Pittsburgh Penguins.

Pittsburgh should pass. If they're trading the 14th pick it needs to be packaged with someone for a useful roster player. There's no sense to trade the 14th pick for more lottery tickets.

I will never understand the part of this fanbase that wants to use the first round picks. If it's not a top 5 pick, they should be moving it. This core has 4 years left, five if they're lucky. You trade these picks for someone to help you NOW. I know a LARGE majority of the vocal fanbase wasn't around to see the dark years from 2001 - Crosby, but this rebuild will be much, much worse than that. The likelihood of them making the playoffs next year is high. They'll be competitive for the remainder of Crosby's career. That means AT BEST, they're picking somewhere from 16-31 lets say for the next 3-5 years. The prospects they have are not great, they're not even bottom six regulars in the NHL. They have a couple nice goalie prospects and pickering who MIGHT be a solid 2nd pairing option someday but we're talking about YEARS from now. Nobody they draft at 14 this year is going to help this core, and the chances are they likely won't ever be impact players anyway.
Use the little assets you have to make savvy enough moves to help this core MAYBE make one or two more runs. They deserve it, we have been SPOILED as fans of this franchise.

I'd take Hill but guessing Vegas resigns.
Too much on Zucker and Pacioretty coming off more Achilles issues... nah</div></div>
I'd absolutely 100% take the risk to sign Patches for a discount on a one year prove it contract.
Zucker is going to be somewhere in the 5-6M range. He's a UFA top 6 winger that just scored 27 goals in 78 games. Along with the forecheck and physicality he brings, this number is in the right ballpark for him.
Compher is a pending UFA and the injuries to the avalanche doesn't change his ability to test the open market, same thing goes for Hill & Gavrikov.
I'm not sure why people are acting like these players are restricted to the teams they currently play for.

As a penguins fan, I disagree. I'll take LeBanc at 2.5 for one year over Granlund at 5M per for two more years. The reality is, Guentzel needs an extension & you're going to have to either buy Granlund out or use the first round pick to HOPEFULLY move on from him. Sharks would be doing the penguins a favor here. I'd jump at this opportunity.

These are the takes I hate about the penguins. Who gives a **** about Owen Pickering? You committed to winning the minute you resigned the core + rakell. You have very little assets and a player like Pickering isn’t about to benefit this team for 4,5 years.
In four or 5m five years, Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin & Kris Letang will all be retired. At that point, regardless if you traded the picks & b level prospects or not, you are in a full sail rebuild that will see this team be absolutely terrible for atleast 5 years.
Trade the prospects, the picks and go for it.

Yes, both goalies look good and could very well be elite. Their problem is in games played. Saros has 2 seasons of >40 games (Demko has 1). Sample size plays a factor.
We can disagree if you'd like but the numbers (while great) are not a large enough size to be called elite. And not elite goalies don't fetch as much as you'd think in trades.
If Saros has another strong season with 50+ games, he would be worth more. But, then again he would only have 1 more season of control. So...</div></div>
That’s just a crazy take brother lol you can’t dock him for backing up Rinne. He’s got 286 GP in his career, a 2.58GAA & a 9.19sv%
Saros saved 46.7 goals above expected this year, that led the league. Last year he was 6th, the year before that - 5th. Whoever you’re having this fight with about him, stop having it because you are wrong lol

I can’t see a world where a 33 year old, expiring UFA who had a knee injury last year fetches more than a third round pick, in all honesty. Nino NIEDERREITER went for a 2nd with a 4m aav with another year on his deal. I’d agree that maybe they don’t take rutta, maybe a ty smith instead but a 2nd + a prospect is lunacy

They also likely pass on any deal with sharangovich as the main piece. He’s on an expiring deal and isn’t that attractive.
San Jose doesn’t have to trade Timo Meier. If NJ wants him it’s going to cost them. Any trade for Meier starts with Holtz and a first round pick, then you can add from there. They’re not going to take back a contract AND retain money, either (not that your deal has that but the entire board is full of devils fans being weird)

Genuinely think you’re going to be SHOCKED by the return for Kane. The reported ask is currently a Giroux like return (which is less than I have given the hawks here)
You’ll end up seeing him traded for a prospect, a 1st and a third with 50% retained by Chicago.
And if you think that’s bad, wait until you see the return on Toews lol

Imagine trying to improve this team by giving Ben Chariot a contract, period. He's not good. You're also overpaying him. No.
I'm okay with moving on from Zucker.
Heinen has produced 14 goals in 13 assists while making 1.1m this season. He'll get a raise, but the penguins should be considering keeping him as a bottom six scoring option somewhere around 2.5ish.

Big time disagree. They have exactly one player on the backend who is better than MP and I don’t think they’re looking for picks at all right now. They’ve got basically until the deadline next season before Eichel says “**** this I’m done”. Jack Eichel doesn’t give a **** about a 2nd round pick, and they have nobody other than JE worth more than a 2nd round pick. They’re also not getting any forward prospects worth a damn for an 8m rental player who’s scored once since like January.

I don't see him here next year. But I think next year this team looks totally different on the 3rd line because Hextal will pick better bottom 6 players than JR did.
This isn't true at all. Matheson has looked good so far.
If he continues playing that way Seattle will take him, most the penguins add is a 2nd or 3rd to make sure.</div></div>
Every single underlying number that we use to evaluate a player shows us that Matheson has been bad this year.
He’s made a couple nice plays over his last two games. It doesn’t excuse him from being a below replacement level defender in the nhl his entire career.
