Yes. That would be the only way it works under the cap for both teams.

Just my two cents.</div></div>
The cost to play it is definitely a big factor.

Part of me thinks it has something to do with the broadcast. I've noticed that TSN broadcasts start at 7:08 when the game is scheduled for 7. But Sportsnet is 7:15.

Thread:
The NHL needs to change these things
1) I don't like the idea of favouring teams that just miss the playoffs. The whole premise of the draft priority is so that teams who need help the most get the better players. I think the adjustments that have been made so that a team doesn't keep winning the lottery is much better than it has been. As I mentioned in my other reply, it'll be interesting to see how the PWHL format goes.
2) I'm all for anything that encourages player movement, but I don't think that's the holdup. As you saw between Montreal and Carolina, teams take offer sheets personally. A lot of GM's have respect for each other and will likely not do it unless the compensation is lowered drastically.
3) This definitely seems to be becoming a problem. I personally don't see how you can be ok for game 1 of the playoffs, but not ok for game 82 of the regular season. I'm not sure if a series is the way to go, but maybe 4 games. I also do like the idea that the 20 skaters on the ice in the playoffs have to be within 10% over the cap at most. Or maybe even cap compliant.
4) I think the tax thing helps in a player's decision. More so at the end of their career. But if the team is winning or has a good potential to win, then players will sign there.
5) Other changes I would make are:
a) Go to a 3 point system all the time. 3 points for a regulation win. This keeps playoff chases alive for longer in the regular season.
b) Go back to the 1-8 playoff format. This current system has way too many really juggernaut match-ups in the first 2 rounds. The only difference from the old system I would want is that division winners
are guaranteed a playoff spot and not 3rd place.
c) Get rid of coaches challenges. Have an off-ice official. If there is goaltender interference or a blatant offside that was missed, the off-ice official calls it and then they can have a review or discussion. This
would also give opportunity to refs who want to continue to be involved in the game, but have to retire because of physical demands. It would also remove the close ones that we have to wait 10 minutes
for the review to be done. If it's that close, then just let it go.
d) Expand OT to 8 or 10 minutes, but maybe also throw in a floating blue-line. I would prefer to not see players skate back to their own zone and go behind their net to maintain possession. A floating blue-
line would be once you cross the offensive blue-line, you can then only go back as far as you own blue-line, but the offensive blue-line is no longer offside. They have this rule in some ball hockey leagues
I've played in. It works really well. This expands the offensive zone and keeps the offensive flow going in OT. If they extended it to the red line, that could work too.
e) This isn't really anything to do with the rules, it's more for broadcasting and help grow the audience. They need to get rid of this model where there is a contract for nationally televised games and
regionally televised games. Stop with these blackouts. Especially if you buy the NHL Gamecentre package. Blackouts are giving cable companies way too much control. You should be able to buy a
subscription to get all of your team's broadcasts. I would like to see teams have their own team of broadcasters and create their own production for the game. I don't know about all other fan-bases, but I
know there are quite a few that don't like the Sportsnet broadcasts. There are some in the US that don't like what ESPN does for their broadcasts either.

I'm interested to see how the PWHL format works. Maybe it could be a better format in the future for the NHL. It gives teams a reason to keep playing to win. Mind you, I don't think the players care about securing a top pick in the draft, but it would certainly encourage GM's to not strip their teams bare in order to improve their lottery odds.
I do think the process is now much better in the NHL than it was before. I like that we can't have a situation like we did before when Edmonton was winning every lottery.

It would make more sense for Ottawa to get Jarvis in the deal instead of him going to Anaheim. Anaheim would then get Drury. I'd rather see Luneau going to Ottawa as well instead of Helleson. Ottawa could also send a 2nd or 3rd round pick to even things out more. Either way, I'd still rather see Pinto stay in Ottawa, but if he needs to be traded, this would be more fair.

For the DeBrincat trade, I don't think Kupari and Vilardi gets it done. Ottawa would have a hole in the top 6 with that trade.
A fair trade would have to be something like:
To LA: DeBrincat, Joseph & Brannstrom
To Ott: Kempe, Vilardi & Roy
Throw in 3rd - 7th round picks to fully balance it out each way, but that would be a good hockey trade in my opinion.

DeBrincat won't get 8 x $9,000,000 with the way he's playing this year. Ontario taxes are only a little bit less than California.

I'm assuming since this is a 23-24 Sens team this happens after this season is over, so only 1 year of Zaitsev. But you could be spot on. If Sens insist on the 2nd being their 2024, maybe Hawks ask for something else.</div></div>
Not only is it just for the 1 year. It would likely be after his bonus is paid. So in actual salary it would be $2.5 million with a $4.5 million cap hit.

He was just signed to an extension anyway. Why would they trade him? If Lou were to do that, it would be for a futures package because he'd be doing a rebuild. It doesn't make sense. I think the poster is just trolling Sens fans. They're either a Leafs or a Habs fan is my guess.

Final touches before the season starts
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Lanctot</b></div><div>As a Sens fan myself, I really like this setup if we could land Chychrun! Alternatively, I propose the sens start the season as is and try to pry Dobson out of NYI if their season starts off poorly and they consider starting a fire sale to kick start a rebuild. Shipping out Barzal and Dobson could fetch a large reurn for NYI and I'd much prefer the price for Dobson rather then Chychrun. Plus Dobson is a Right shot D which is what the sens really need. I suggest the trade looks like Z. Ostapchuk, E. Brannstrom, a 1st in 2023 (top 10 protected) and WSH 2nd rounder in 2024 for N. Dobson.
Toughts?</div></div>
Yeah that could work. I'm not sure NYI would want to go the rebuild route though. They also would probably ask for the same price Arizona is asking for Chychrun. They just signed Dobson too, so they don't really have any reason to trade him, unless he asks for a trade. I think if we're looking for alternatives to Chychrun, we'd have to look at teams that are over or really close to the cap or players that have 1 year left on the contracts. Severson, Tanev, Weegar & Dumba are all guys that could be targeted. I think if the team doesn't pull the trigger on a trade before camp, there might be some rumours that start around November/December where new names start circling the rumour mill. I hope it doesn't come to that because Ottawa really needs to upgrade the defense and it becomes even more pressing if Sanderson isn't ready for top 4 minutes. Zaitsev also needs to be moved as well.

I figured Chychrun could play with Sanderson or Chabot, same with Zub. I figured since Zub already has chemistry with Chabot, that I'd start with that and give Sanderson a very good D partner. Hamonic slots in perfectly on the 3rd pair. I found that when he played higher up last season, while he was a definite upgrade over Josh Brown, he looked out of place playing top 4 minutes. I would rather keep him in the bottom pair. Holden and Brannstrom can swap in and out depending on who's playing well and who the opponent is.

The rumoured ask from Arizona for Chychrun is:
- Zaitsev
- Meriläinen / Sogaard
- 2023 1st round pick
- 2024 1st round pick
- 2024 2nd round pick
Basically they're asking the same thing Chicago paid for Jones. I think one of the 1st round picks will be taken out and replaced with a forward prospect like Jarventie or Ostapchuk and it's likely going to happen before training camp.

Considering what the rumoured ask from Arizona is, I think that would be alright to swallow on Ottawa's side. Ottawa could offer a 2024 1st and Jarventie (currently playing for Finland in the WJHC). Would that do it? You could always take Zaitsev back as well (I'm joking btw).
