Trade Zaitsev to fit the contracts
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Gauss</b></div><div>I am looking at all the other posts that want to improve defense and to stay under the cap trade a crap load of prospects and pics with a Kapanen, Brown, Johnson, Zaitsev etc to make the room for a 5+ million Defense to keep Nylander. We won't have a Marlies team left to call up players giving up so much future.</div></div>
I don't understand your point here. I'm not suggesting to trade away any prospects or picks.
I think that out of the Leafs players Zaitsev and Brown are probably the most expendable and most overpaid.
I think that obviously the leafs can't afford to have the best offence in the league and the best defence in the league the goal is to have players who are worth more than what you pay them, and Zaitsev is overpaid and Nylander is not.
I think it's better to remove a fringe 2nd/3rd pair defenceman and replace him with a 3rd pair defenceman than to remove a 1st line Forward talent and replace him with a 3rd/4th line Forward

I assume you are talking about Sparks, to which I didn't really put too much stock in the comparables because it's kind of hard to compare back up goalies. He could possibly go up to $1M. With Kapy the only comparable who signed for more was Mantha but he was the least similar to Kapy, and had a more proven track record, and a bigger role with Detroit than Kapy has with Toronto.

Trade Zaitsev to fit the contracts
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>Here's my take on Zaitsev. If he not NHL competent as so many suggest....than he's an impossible trade due to his contract. If he is NHL competent then the Leafs keep...even if is overpaid. I've suggested that he Leafs "force" him to stay in Toronto during the offseason. He training or skills development seems to messed. Let him be coached in Toronto in July and August, and keep his Russia vacation very short.
If cap is an issue, the Leafs should be looking at trading a forward where they seem to have viable replacements. I'm of the belief recently that Marleau is going to retire. He seems "done" and he must know it too. His cap hit can be traded if he decides to retire.
I didn't disagree with your Pesce trade that you posted earlier, but now having Muzzin, maybe it isn't necessary.</div></div>
I believe Zaitsev is probably capable enough to play in the NHL, but is just overpaid. A time like NJ lacks RD and has a lot of cap space, so I think they might look to acquire him, hoping he can fit in their top 4
I really don't think he helps the leafs D core that much more than Liljgren, Holl, Borgman, Ozhiganov, Rosen,or even Marincin can.
It's not like Borgman is completely a shot in the dark either, I thought he was fantastic when he played for the leafs last year

So you think that it's integral the leafs keep Zaitsev because they need him on defense, but Nylander is expendable for Pesce? I would disagree. Nylander alone is worth far more to this team than Zaitsev and Pesce combined IMO, and his cap hit is less than both of them combined.

I don't want to give up Nylander for any of the wild D-men but for what it's worth IMO Spurgeon >> Dumba

You probably have to swap one bad contract for another, which likely only saves the Leafs ~$1M or so. $1M can go a long way, but it doesn't help a ton with how big the Matthews and Marner contracts will be.</div></div>
I may just be overly optimistic, but I truly believe that there will be a team that see's a shot-blocking defensive penalty killing defenseman, who will look perfect on their 2nd pair.
And if that doesn't work, they could always waive him, and scratch him on the marlies so that he'll agree to terminate his contract in favour of going back to the KHL.

Trade Marleau for purposes of buyout and resign him
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Jamiepo</b></div><div>He will no longer have an nmc if he is moved as he will have to waive it. But again there is no relief in a buyout but there is if he is buried so how do you explain a buyout without collusion.</div></div>
Depending on the contract a player may have the option to waive a NMC once for the purposes of being traded to a specific team and not permanently. So this is a good point to consider, but depending on the contract he may be able to waive it once and then have it still in effect on his new team.
Also, there are still instances where teams elect to buyout a 35+ contract, where it could be to free up a roster spot, or because they want to cut the cost of actual dollars spent down, not just the cap hit. It’s entirely possible that the league may deem this as collusion, but I don’t feel like it’s a certainty that it would be viewed as such.

Orpik was not on a +35 contract. There is no other way to explain the buyout (which yields $0 relief) of a 25 goal scorer other than collusion. This is not permitted.</div></div>
As long as Toronto is willing to compensate them, the league has never punished teams for using their cap space to gain assets. Toronto still has to pay a price, and I don't believe it is all that different from Vegas acquiring Brassard solely to retain salary for Pittsburgh.

In Capfriendly's Buyout FAQ it states "If a player has a no-movement clause, the player can reject the option of waivers and proceed to the buyout process." So it would seem he has the ability to reject waivers and still get bought out.

Trade Marleau for purposes of buyout and resign him

It's always those 'what if' questions that makes you think that this could happen and it would be amazing for Toronto fans. Although, I think Gardiner would need a change in scenery. We don't always hate him, but we don't always love what he does on the ice either. Also, it would be a dream to trade and resign Marleau, but Brooks Orpik didnt have no clauses on his contract. Marleau signed that No Movement Clause for a reason. Good job tho.</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Caps_Man</b></div><div>Yeah I dont think that will work. Orpik was a different scenario, and he didn't have any clauses</div></div>
I don't see why he would be opposed to waiving his NMC though? He won't have to pass through waivers to be bought out, so there's no risk of him not coming back to Toronto, and it would help the team, making it easier for him to win a cup, which at the end of the day is what he wants. He'll even be making slightly more money than he would've before.

Marleau Trade Idea
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Juice</b></div><div>In order to buy him out, they have to put him on waivers. In order to put him on waivers, Marleau must waive his NMC.
Even if he decided to do that, there would be 0 guarantees that he would pass thru waivers. 1 year for a 25+ goal scorer at $6.25m when it's proven he's a great locker-room leader/influence is not an undesirable player/contract...
so again...would Marleau ever waive his NMC and subject himself to having no control over where he may end up? Just not a realistic option.</div></div>
In Capfriendly's Buyout FAQ it states "If a player has a no-movement clause, the player can reject the option of waivers and proceed to the buyout process." So it would seem he has the ability to reject waivers and still get bought out, making this an effective solution.
Also I don't know if you can do a buyout outside of June 15th-31st? so the buyout team may be forced to eat his signing bonus

JOIN THE GM GAME - AGM'S NEEDED!

You should swing by the "GM Game 2018-19" forum located in the Forums section of CapFriendly.
The way this game operates is having 31 people like you and me, pretending to be fake GMs of each franchise. You'd get to act as if you were in charge of a team. You would negotiate deals with our GMs, make trades, and everything else that happens in real life, that an actual GM would do. There would also be free agency, the draft, expansion, and more during the offseason; in additions to the power rankings released every month.
You would start out as an Assistant General Manager, but you would be a great addition to this fun game. GM spots open up as GMs are fired/leave, and AGMs would take over their spots.
If you have any questions, please check out the GM Game 2018-19 forum at: <a href="https://capfriendly.com/forums/gm-game-v3" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">https://capfriendly.com/forums/gm-game-v3</a>
