(PIT/CAR) - Guentzel, Smith for Bunting, Koivunen, Ponomarev, Lucius, 2024 2nd (PHI), 2024 5th (CAR)
So many overreactions to this deal, in my opinion. Especially after seeing the market, Dubas did well for himself. No top tier prospects got moved <strong>anywhere</strong>... unless you're being charitable and include Erstrom to san Jose. (Maybe Erstrom will be a great NHL player, but I'm unconvinced, as of this post.)
And the elephant in the room is, even as good as Guentzel is, the Penguins just can't keep hanging on to all these players. Guentzel's going to be 30 soon. The last thing the Penguins need is another 30+ year old player on a long, expensive contract. This was a painful but necessary move. And if one or two of Ponomarev, Koivunen, Lucius, and the pick(s) become reliable middle six players, I actually think that's fine. The player(s) replacing Guentzel don't have to fill his exact role. If they fill another role, and allow the flexibility to get a younger 1st line winger in another trade or free agency, you still accomplished your goal.

Toronto Maple Leafs signed Ilya Samsonov (1 Year / $3,550,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>aadoyle</b></div><div>Have u not seen Dubas's last 2 big goalie contracts
Mrazek 3.8m x 3 years
Jarry 5.5m x 5 years
He would have gave Sammy 4.9m as he already gave him the discount deal</div></div>
We'll see how the Jarry contract looks in a few years. Jarry's problem is staying healthy. He's been an all-star caliber goalie when he's healthy, though.

Seems like you're making several leaps of faith here. (1) Saying Dubas would just given him anything, and (2) already acting as if Treliving is some kind of badass who can strong-arm anyone into accepting his terms.

I'm just confused by anyone who posted "Treliving W", or some variation. You know this was an arbitration contract, right? An independent third party awarded this contract. Whether you like the deal or not, Treliving argued for a lower number, Samsonov's agent argued for a higher number, and this was the actual result.

This guy's never even played a single NHL game. Not even a single ECHL game. And he got a contract for almost $1 million dollars? What a dumb general manager.

"We don't make mistakes here, Mr. McGing."

He was. There was a "bidding war" for him. At least as much of a bidding war as there can be for late bloomer NCAA prospects.

It doesn't matter. If the Penguins success comes down to who occupies their 40-50 range contracts, the season's lost anyway.

That's not the intent. Dubas had a presser, and said the next order of business was to make some AHL signings. Wilkes-Barre was awful. So there's probaly going to be more deals like this from Dubas, to try and make the Baby Penguins an actual team again.

Anaheim Ducks signed Alex Killorn (4 Years / $6,250,000 AAV)
With this UFA class, most people should've expected Killorn to get overpaid. Anaheim still has a ton of cap space. And the cap will probably go up in the upcoming seasons. But the last two seasons of that deal probably won't look too good.

I think that's only a valid criticism if the Penguins stand pat with their other 30+, $5 million guys. I wouldn't be surprised one bit to see Granlund and/or Petry traded before training camp--if not a lot sooner.

Chicago Blackhawks signed Nick Foligno (1 Year / $4,000,000 AAV)
This is just to get closer to the cap floor. Well, not <em>just</em> to reach the cap floor. But they deliberately overpaid him because it's only for one season, and there's no big name FAs that'll be out there who could reasonably be headed to Chicago.

Pittsburgh Penguins signed Valtteri Puustinen (1 Year / $775,000 AAV)
Now if (unlike Hextall) Dubas actually calls him up to the NHL sometime, and if Sullivan actually gives him minutes, maybe we can really see if Puustinen is an NHL player or not. Puustinen's never going to be mistaken for Teemu Selanne. But he might have the tools to be an NHL regular, or at least a bottom six fill-in player.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BradTolliverGoalie</b></div><div>Wonder who signed him to this with management gone though. Sullivan?</div></div>
This has been a big misconception. I read that press release wrong myself, after Hextall was fired. Sullivan isn't like the acting GM, or helping with choosing a GM. Sullivan and a few others are basically just doing the paperwork that Hextall and company would've been doing. I'm assuming this deal was worked out through some other high-ranking player development people. From what I understand, the GM, or even the assistant GM, doesn't even negotiate and sign low level deals like this. They leave it to other people most of the time.

Pittsburgh Penguins signed Pierre-Olivier Joseph (2 Years / $825,000 AAV)
It's well past the time Joseph gets a real shot at the NHL. Hopefully this means someone's on the way out. I don't dislike Dumoulin or Pettersson, but that defensive group is extremely overpaid. If they could shed some salary there and have Joseph step in, that'd be a big help to their cap situation.

Pittsburgh Penguins signed Rickard Rakell (6 Years / $5,000,000 AAV)
I don't know what people are complaining about. The only issue I see is Sullivan's reluctance to play Rakell on Crosby's line. Whether by the eye-test or advanced stats, a Guentzel-Crosby-Rakell line was ludicrously productive.
