2023 outlook
Outside of the D, I think this team is as strong, or stronger than what they have this year. Values for ROR and Bunting could be a little low, but with money to spare, I think you're in the ballpark. I think the Samsonov contract is inflated too, I would expect around 2.5-3m per on a shorter term. They still need a better top pair D

You think they're willing to take the risk that he keeps this up and will continue to on the outside of their rebuild? Grier is only trying to talk up his asset and drive up the price as high as he can. If they didnt want to move him, there wouldnt even be a discussion

Very much a typical Leafs post not moving one of your higher end pieces but still acquiring elite top line players. Doesn't work that way.</div></div>
You are aware Kane only wants to go to toronto or new york right?

Murray (cap dump, could retain and flip)
Engvall (serviceable player who can play all positions, which they could retain salary on and flip for assets)
Abruzzese (Solid B prospect)
1st round pick
for
Burtuzzi (Rental having a down year)
Ned (overpayed and buried in the minors)
This one seems pretty even
Meir (basically a rental)
Karlsson (terrible contract, having a great season)
for
Kerfoot (serviceable player who can play all positions, which they could retain salary on and flip for assets)
Holl (serviceable player on a cheap contract who can play all positions, which they could retain salary on and flip for assets)
Knies (top power forward prospect that literally every team is rumored to want in any deal)
1st round pick
3rd round pick
3rd round pick
I don't see the problem

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Dutchies</b></div><div>The Leafs say no.
There's no need to move Murray. When healthy he's decent, and Sammy has been excellent this year, so he's just a back up.
Bert is a shell of his former self this year, with no guarantee to improve. Ned isn't a need or a fit.
Shelling out a first and one of our best prospects just doesn't make sense.</div></div>
The key on Murray is he's not healthy, and he's a huge cap hit. moving Murray facilitates more impactful moves. I do agree, the compensation is probably too high though

I see Rielly/Holl being deployed in primarily offensive zone starts while McCabe/Brodie would be the shutdown pair. I personally think Sandin is too small for the playoffs, and the Gio/Lilly pair could take secondary shutdown mins

I believe this scenario puts the Leafs at 53 standard player contracts, the limit is 50. Even NHL 23 wouldn't let you do this.
3rd, 5th, young goalie prospect for old goalie and out for the year forward. That one isn't adding up to me, regardless if Nyquist can come back and be free money. I like the Acciari trade

STL - TOR
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>kmerk12</b></div><div>You're right, I was picturing this probably as a secondary move for added scoring depth and some physicality. But on the other hand, Toronto's cap situation is becoming very difficult and I don't see them paying for a player that would demand significant salary. Maybe the Blues do a sign and trade in this situation so Toronto is comfortable planning around it. Maybe Toronto goes all in or maybe they do nothing.</div></div>
With the right retention, and moving out a little salary (one or more of Kerfoot, Engvall, Holl) to a rebuilding team that could retain on them and flip for assets, they can do a lot if they're creative. Kerfoot can be replaced by a callup as hes been relegated to 4th line duty, they just extended Holl's replacement (Timmins) yesterday, and Engvall just doesnt fit anymore

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Hammerwise</b></div><div>You are correct, but then you'd have to make this deal very soon, as you'd want to get kerfoot on the market sooner (and you are correct, he does have value with retention to a contender, but more often than not, most leaf fans dont take into account the non-existant market of value for a 3.5mil kerfoot, so they pawn him off and make their trade partner do the leg work)
I just dont think this trade goes through until the TDL, and then you have a limited window (and limited buyers) to move kerfoot for value.</div></div>
Fortunately, Dubas has a history of completing his work early. We've also overlooked the value of a young, cost controlled, HOMETOWN power forward coming to Arizona. Im surprised Gary Betman himself hasnt forced this trade through just on that merit

Murray is negative value, no question. I'd argue Kerfoot is not negative value. if ARZ was to retain on him they could absolutely flip for a 2nd rounder and/or decent prospect. He is a versatile player (can play all positions) and can move up and down the lineup. If he was making 2 million, he wouldn't even be considered as a player the leafs wanted to move, I'm still not convinced they even want to move him at 3.5 as it is

And what are other teams going to bid? 2 A level almost if not NHL ready prospects, and a 1st is pretty good value. I'd even go as far as pulling Niemela and Minten and replacing with Sandin and a B level prospect or 3rd rounder
