Realistic Oilers Offseason
On LTIR, you don't accrue cap space, so it doesn't make sense to hold on to Kassian. I could see him packaged with a pick, or bought out as his cap hit on buyout is only $667k for next season.
To take full advantage of LTIR, you need to be at cap, so having $2.2m unused doesn't help. I'd find a way to use it.
If you want to accrue cap space, I could see them moving Klefbom's contract with a pick to a team that's already in LTIR. If his contract is insured, no dollar impact to the team taking him on.
If all you get for Puljujarvi is a 3rd and 7th, I would hold on to him, and not sign a player like Phil Kessel. Puljujarvi looked good until Covid, and I don't value a 3rd and 7th at all.

Love Barclay Goodrow as an Oiler fan, but Edmonton has a home grown actual Edmontonian backup goalie who went 13gp - 2.62gaa - 0.913sp, signed to a $750k deal. Given Edmonton's goal situation, can't see this happening.

Yep. Really like the Gagner signing. He'd be a great add at $950k

Klefbom, unfortunately, should be listed on LTIR. No indications that he's able to return, most believe he's in LTIRetirement.

Unfortunately, Klefbom appears to be done. He's LTIR for his final contract season.
No way Yamamoto gets 5.25m over 6. He has 3 RFA years left, you're likely looking at a 2 year deal for when some of the older players cap comes off.
Puljujarvi won't sign that deal either, has 2 years of RFA left. Either a one year deal (likely preference for both sides,) two years to walk him to UFA (maybe agent wants that,) or long term.
I see Kulak signing at something like $2.25x4 to play bottom pair (Kris Russell v2.0)

Bouchard, with 12 goals, would have been 10th on the Isles between Oliver Wahlstrom and Anthony Beauvillier.
His 43 points? 6th, between Bailey and Pageau.
His +10 rating? 2nd, behind Adam Pelech.
Oh, and he has an $863k cap hit as a right shooting defender.
I wouldn't trade Bouchard's current contract for the players listed, much less throw in Puljujarvi (who you think is a 2nd liner) and a 2nd round pick in 2023.

Edmonton gives a 1st and a 2nd to clear $667k?

Sorry, I can't see how Jacob Bryson would fit.
Edmonton has Nurse and Keith on the left, and will likely resign Kulak.
They have Bouchard, Ceci, Barrie on the right.
They have Broberg who's on the edge of playing (23gp and 1 in the playoffs,) who plays both sides, and Niemo whom the fans love and brings a unique skill (which is why fans love him) who played 20 games this season. They also have Samorukov, who they've been very high on, and a bunch of college guys that will likely be traded and become the next John Marino.
I can't see them bringing on a 24 year old defender with under 150 games.

Personally, I like Puljujarvi, and would rather just keep developing him. A team could try and do an offer sheet, but it's unlikely (for all of the reasons GM's don't offer them.) This was predicated by the belief that Edmonton does not have the cap space, and that's not true. If Kane isn't coming back (and from what Kane posted and Holland said, sounds very unlikely.) Edmonton has cap space for McLeod, Yamamoto, Puljujarvi, Kulak, and anyone else Holland wants to bring back.

So they match, hold on, and move him as a RFA next season. Or, someone offers him a deal that takes him to UFA, in which he would need more years, and could be flipped for the remainder. That said, if you were a GM, would you offer $4.2m AAV for more than a single season for Puljujarvi? I'd think Edmonton would likely take the pick and watch a team put themselves into a hole.

Considering the cap situation in that case, why would an NHL ready power first round power forward on an ELC not be seen as a suitable return. Maybe another prospect or a 2nd is attached but this is perfectly fair based on everything said by the Edmonton media /and/ Ken Holland.</div></div>
Gregor and others think Kane is gone, which makes sense from both Kanes post and Holland's year end press conference.
Yamamoto's a very useful player, I would value him more than Puljujarvi at this point and time, and you have 3 years ELC for Yamo rather than 2 for Puljujarvi.
Without Kane, Edmonton's cap space is not a concern. If Smith retires or LTIR, and/or Duncan Keith decides to call it a career rather than play for $1.5m, and Edmonton's suddenly floating in cap space.
I could see a team offering Puljujarvi a one year $4.2m contract, which Edmonton could match with current cap. Dunno if they would though, might match, retain and flip at that point and time.

Dunno what yelling at Ryan Rishaug would accomplish - he's paid to create media, and I doubt Holland would ask him his opinon. That said, Edmonton media is likely the cause of me being "pissy," - they're only good relative to Eric Francis down south.

If Smith decides not to retire, and rather goes on LTIR for his injuries, it doesn't make sense to move Klefbom. If they're moving on from Puljujarvi, it'll likely happen before they know about Smith, so I can't see this being the basis for a deal.

Edmonton would decline - Bouchard is why Barrie can be moved, Broberg plays both sides, McLeod plays PP, PK, up and down the lineup, and you're asking for a first. Connor Brown has one year to UFA, and even eating on his contract, can't see this being of interest to Edmonton.

Kane's sent his thank you to the team and fans, can't see him coming back.
If they buy out Kassian (likely as his buyout is $667k.) call up Skinner (who's waiver eligible, so unless Smith retires, no point in bringing in a goalie,) Holloway and Broberg, leaves them $12.1m to resign Yamamoto, Puljujarvi, McLeod and maybe Kulak.

Oh, and just saw the Kuzmenko signing. He's going to be a one year ELC, 925k, FA one year after signing.

But I would say it wasn't even the depth that was the issue I think they just lost to a better team. Overall team defense will definitely need to be addressed which is why I think they move on from Bouchard and could see them go after another shut down dman especially with Manson as the coach.
And no I don't think goaltending was the issue but would be a little risky going into next season with a rookie and a 41 year old Smith. Need at least one guy that could give you some NHL minutes.</div></div>
Skinner ran 13games with a 2.62gaa and a 0.913sp in the NHL, and 35gp and 2.21gaa with a 0.920sp in the AHL this season, at a cap hit of $750k, signed for next season. As a 23 old goalie, he's looking like a good option for Edmonton, and at league minimum and his age, no chance he clears waivers (eligible this year.)
I think that they might move on from Barrie (your post says Bouchard,) but only because of players like Bouchard and Broberg.
I wouldn't give up alot to move Kassian due to the terms of his buyout (666k cap hit next season, carries into the future where players like Keith's contract comes off.) That said, if someone wants Kemp, would make that deal.

Skinner is waiver eligible, so I'd trade him before losing him on waivers.
That said, was goaltending the problem with Edmonton, or was it depth?
I wouldn't commit 4 years to Campbell at this point, rather spend the money on upgrading the bottom six.

Problem with Edmonton trading for a goalie is that they have Smith and Skinner signed for next season. Skinner is waiver eligible, and I would expect he'd be picked up if waived. Smith is popular with his teammates and Edmonton's leadership, unless he chooses to retire or go on LTIR, I think Edmonton runs a Smith/Skinner combo next year.

If Keith retires, Edmonton gets a recapture benefit of $3.4m for next season. Puljujarvi has 3 RFA years left, Yamo 4. I'd bridge both of them over 2 years (acknowledging that the Nurse bridge shows how dangerous that can be.)
