Solving the Cap Problem
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Kotkaniemi15</b></div><div>As for all of the Byron/Kulak stuff:
I think that Byron should absolutely be on our normal lineup. If everyone’s ok with it and you want to send him to the taxi-squad on off-days as a paper transaction to save cap space, go ahead. However that might pose a few issues with waivers or Byron’s mental state, so this might not work.
As for trading Kulak, I think we need to do it. We need to make sure that we are not only cap compliant this year, but next year as well, when we need cap space more. So we need to have breathing room for the inevitable performance bonuses for KK/Suzuki/Romanov. To do that, we need to make a trade. While Kulak is great with Petry, it’s unlikely that he’ll play with Petry this year, because if he was the habs wouldn’t have signed Edmundson to the contract they did. And I also think that if he’s playing on the 3rd pairing, Kulak’s extra $1 million isn’t worth the difference between him and his replacement, which would be Mete. Mete is cheaper, as well as being more flexible since he can play both sides. And even if we get an injury or 2, we have an abundance of NHL-level D who could easily be nearly as good as Kulak would be.</div></div>
Totally agree. He's expendable and has some value in a trade. Get midround pick we use at the trade deadline to bolster for the playoffs.

Romanov Petry
Edmunson Mete

I'm under the impression, his cap hit counts when you bring him back. There must some loopholes and something I'm missing. If we can keep Kulak, all the better. I actually like him. But if I'm choosing between Byron and Kulak I'm choosing Byron.

What does escrow except mean? He clears waivers, goes to the taxi squad. They bring him back in 2 games, his full cap hot doesn't count?
I'm happy to keep Kulak. I'm just under the impression we can't stay cap compliant. If you want Romanov and Juulsen on the team.

So Frolik plays ahead of Byron (an assistant captain)? If he comes into the lineup in 1-2 games how do you stay cap compliant? Who goes to the taxi squad? Am I missing something?

Kulak likely doesn't clear waivers and we lose him for nothing. You make a good point about Thompson being recently signed. How bad does Winnepeg need an LD? Kulak is definitely better than Beaulieu and if Winnipeg doesnt trade Roslovic he plays 4th line?

I think you're seriously overvaluing Kulak and undervaluing Byron. Although Kulak looked great in the playoffs he only looked good with Petry. Byron is a perrenial 20+ goals scorer and swiss army knife of a player. He kills penalties and can easily go up and down the lineup, not to mention to the breakaway speed. Kulak is a dime a dozen defenceman. Any one of Romanov, Mete, Fleury, Juulsen replaces him without much loss if any. Moving him frees up space and management issues.

Habs Center Depth
You have to trade Kulak for a pick or a fifth experience 750,000 center. Evans can move to Taxi Squad if you get a serviceable center. Brassard would have been nice.
If Juulsen and Romanov are in fact ready for full time Kulak is unnecessary. Any combo of Romanov, Mete, Juulsen, Fleury rotate for the last pairing. It's likely Romanov is playing with Petry by the middle of season and Edmunson with Mete. Juulsen is the scratch. Anyone on D gets hurt, use our plethora of picks and prospects MB has stockpiled to trade midseason for replacements. Can easily use them to find depth at Center or LD to replace Kulak.
Lehkonen is not sitting. Frolik can't go to Taxi and be lost to waivers.
Frolik and Perry start the season as healthy scratches. Byron Lehkonen and Armia have spots to lose. Perry and Frolik can rotate out with Armia, Byron or any other winger banged up, fatigued or not playing well. Between injuries, fatigue and slumps Perry and Frolik play 30-40 games each easily. It's gonna be grueling season, that's why MB has Perry and Frolik.
Totally agree we could some experience down the middle. Especially if any of Kk, Danault or Suzuki go down, God forbid 2 of them.

The battle for last spot in the lineup is between Perry, Armia and Byron.
IMO Byron makes it ahead of both. Perry cracks the lineup if Armia falters or they alternate in out.
If Byron falters, Toffoli moves over to the left Armia and Perry move up.
Don't think Byron has to go to Taxi squad. He just gets scratched.
I think one of Kulak or Romanov go to the taxi squad to get cap compliant.

Challenge Get this team under the cap
Nobody is thinking Byron should be in the lineup? My preference is Byron is in along with Armia. Frolik and Perry extras.
The lesser of Kulak and Romonov is on the taxi squad. Do you risk losing Kulak on waivers if Romanov outplays him early or try and trade him for an asset
Byron and Armia are more valuable than Kulak.

Agreed. Was more thinking a roster player with potential to be their equivalent in the future. Short term vs long term gain. Example cup contender takes Byron or Armia for serviceable prospect that will be equivalent in a few years.

Good effort and it gets them under the cap but doesn't make much sense in terms of deployment.
Toffoli can not be on the fourth line. Just can't.
You need a legit center on the fourth line. Byron is not an option.
What happens when Romanov out plays Kulak and or Edmunson in training camp, how do you get him in the lineup without losing someone to waivers?
IMO you have to try and trade Kulak to get under the cap. He has value and may return a pick at Training camp to a team that has an injury. He is easily replaceable. Romanov and Mete can play either side and edmunson as well. Juulsen, Fluery waiting in the wings.
Problems solved.

well heres north division nightmare
Bergevin is waiting to see what happens at Training camp. If there are no injuries then If anyone is moved its Kulak. Moving him gets them under the cap. He s expendable. He gets moved if someone takes him or waived to the taxi squad if he clears. Only way they get under the cap without trading any forwards. The only other way is Romanov is on the taxi squad. Which isn't happening.
Shouldn't consider moving anyone else out. Forward depth is incredible.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>coga16</b></div><div>So the avs are going to go over the cap? Easy decline</div></div>
I realize they would. I'm not familiar enough with their roster to know how they might move players around to get under the cap.
I know Yost has been subject to trade rumours. Byron is a quality player who can play up and down the lineup. I believe we need to trade one of Byron Lehkonen or Armia to make our roster work. But also need equal value in return (roster player). Equivalent to Byron. I don't know Yost well enough but I assume Byron is more value in the short term for the Avs and upgrades their roster in a year where they are favorites to win.
Maybe Colorado doesn't make this trade. I was curious to see what Avs fans thought.

Great job MB now whos out
You must keep Kulak. 1. He's been good and he's cheap and he's D depth. Edmunson and Romanov are unproven thus far. If even they play great, you need Kulak.
You can keep everyone but it's very tight.
Weal goes on waivers and gets buried. Belzile is the extra forward. Romanov extra D. That gets you under the cap. Evans is your fourth center.
In the case of an injury player goes on LTIR (caprelief) Poehling is first call up. If no LTIR Belzile must play.
In this situation Bergy can only call up a 700,000 player. Juulsen I believe is no longer a 2 way, so if ever gets called up he can't go back down and in that case someone needs to get traded.
It's doable but gives no wiggle room.
If someone has to go it's one of Lehkonen, Byron, Armia.
You have to ask yourself who is the most expendable and who can be replaced at a lower cost.
To me it's between Byron and Armia. If you trade Byron for picks you could sign a guy like Kahun for 2Mil? Then you 1.5 cap space. The loss doesn't hurt so much.
If you trade Armias 2.5 Mil can you replace him with someone for 1 M in the open market. If you simply call up Poehling and move Evans to RW you've lost depth and maybe Poehling is ready.
I've been musing this for some time as you can see.
I like Byron alot and he is unique weapon, but that 3.4 is hurting when there is possibly a cheaper equivalent.

I'd be interested to see KK (the playmaker) play with a bonafide sniper for the first time, in Toffoli.
