Ufko, Morrow…
From sounds of UMass final home game, it really sounds like it will be the last for Captain Ryan Ufko. Pre-game sounded like a fairwell…coaches comments after the game sounded like the praise a coach gives his retiring captain. Ufko is still a junior, but is likely to sign with Nashville once the playoffs are over. He is a good one…I would not be surprised to see him make the jump right away.
What is notable in all this…their other star junior dman, Scott Morrow, did not seem to get the “send off” that Ufko got. Maybe they think he is coming back? Carolina tried signing him last Spring and were unsuccessful. There has been talk for a couple years that he may be headed toward NCAA free agency (his rights expire in 2025). And Carolina not having a AHL franchise does not help. If Morrow returns to UMass for his senior season, that could be a pretty good signal he is walking.
Graf, Quillan…
A friend who is on a NCAA coaching staff told me he knows nothing, but has heard Graf and Quillan may sign as a pair for Eastern Conference non-playoff team, but may be just a pitch from their ‘advisor’ (agent). But if true, I’d guess Pittsburgh maybe. (Conventional thought has always been Quillan is going to Boston).
That’s all. Thought I’d share.

As a guy who did not care for Ras most of his career, he is starting to find his game and coming into his frame much better. Most big guys like him take longer to find their game and utilize their size correctly it's sometimes hard to forget he's still only 24 being that this is year 5 for him in the show.
I would say there isnt much injury risk, his biggest injury was a broken knee last year off a wicked clapper from the point. But he hasnt shown any signs that it's bothered him this year, and that injury happened rather late into the season last year.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>A_Habs_fan</b></div><div>If i remember correctly, most CHL players are paid pennies and don’t actually really get help in post-secondary schooling (though this is the wrong way to go about changing that). I also wouldn’t call the CHL a development league, it does have some of those aspects but at the end of the day, that league is there to make the owners money, they don’t necessarily care about developing the kids (though everyone in those leagues are arguably kids). The lawsuit does bring up some valid points, mainly that your rights are owned by the CHL that drafted you for basically your whole period of age eligibility for the CHL so teams can hold your rights hostage if they wanted to</div></div>
They get paid a small stipend, health coverage and expenses paid at billet home. The leagues to pay for college/university, but only for as many years as you play, can only collect within year of playing, and only they cover an amount matched to the cheapest available option to where you live (sometimes it’s online school). Only about half the player ever get tuition money and about one-quarter of the money promised ever is paid out.
Development is not the primary focus.
But these kids do have other options. They can play junior A or in US if they want to go college route (where scholarships are available).
It’s in many ways an outdated system build for the world that was…and needs to adapt to world that will be.

I'd be shocked if they gave up real value for a rental.
Your larger point stands, though, and the goal should be to find guys 21-27 years old who are getting squeezed out by cap or depth. Guys they think can be part of a core, and have term or RFA control. Those are the guys they'll over pay on. Everyone laughed when they dropped a second on McBain.

They are going to target Bill's guys and be willing to overpay to get them. Wouldn't be surprised to see a relatively big name or two, either.

2023-2024 NHL Discussion Thread #3: After Further Review...
Sorry for long post…but this is a huge story.
There has been talk over the last couple of years, since NIL rules were loosened, that eventually NCAA may allow CHL players. Yesterday, <a href="https://www.sportsnet.ca/juniors/article/will-ncaa-coaches-vote-to-allow-chl-players-to-play-u-s-college-hockey/?sn-amp" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">32 Thoughts</a> reported that NCAA may vote at end of season in allowing CHLers or not. I do not believe any vote would be binding as NCAA still has to deem CHL as an “amateur league”. But it continues momentum towards what will likely be some path for CHL players to enter NCAA.
But if this moves forward, the impact, both up river and down river, would be significant. First, the NHL entry draft rules will likely be rewritten. Right now, teams own drafting rights for different lengths for players in CHL vs players on NCAA path (2 years vs 4/5 years). It may even spur the ‘change draft age to 19’ idea back to life. Second, the current hierarchy of junior leagues will be reshuffled as the major selling point of USHL and Canadian Junior A leagues has been their amateur status (allowing, as they often say, “the best of both worlds” by offering kids a junior hockey experience that could still be followed by NCAA). Should they lose this differentiator, their ability to recruit NCAA players, especially from Canada (such as Makar, Johnson, etc) will be harmed. USHL will have less of an adjustment. It may end up hurting some teams more than others as they become less appealing destination for players like Power, Celebrini (who probably stay in CHL then go to NCAA).
I imagine CHL owners will respond to block their players from NCAA…which could further impact future Canadian and US player development. One tool they have would be to force players to commit until they age out of juniors (this could walk us backwards from the Shane Wright rule, the exemption allowing a CHL into AHL) or until the age out of their amateur status.
The idea that I have seen that makes the most sense…is NCAA recognizing any u18 junior player as “an amateur” and should they continue past 18th birthday to play in CHL, they would have to preserve their amateur status. CHL now offers standard player agreements to all players that include payment that makes them ineligible for NCAA. They would have to allow “amateur contracts” as an alternative (which will further complicate their own entry draft rules).
This could also ultimately path the way for a few ideas that have often be discussed, but are practically unworkable now due to current rules in both counties. One has been creating a formal link between CHL and USHL. Another, follows the idea that the numerous court battles underway to dismantle NCAA powers will ultimately succeed and there could be an alignment of Usports with US-based schools.
Big changes could come from this. It is a story worth following.

Scott Stevens signing in St Louis cost them FIVE 1st round picks in compensation for signing him as RFA (then had to give Stevens up a year later since they signed another RFA in Brendan Shanahan did did have the picks to send to NJD).

The Jets did very, very well in that trade. LA gave up a lot, but could justify it saying PLD had done more and they have a window with Doughty.
Until they gave him that ridiculous contract. That is not a contract you give a guy that still has the question marks about consistency and heart that PLD has had follow him twice (three times now). Absolutely insane, imo. And now practically unmoveable with that term if it goes further south.
