They probably should, but I've seen it reported that the owner wants them to compete for a playoff spot, so the extra years of dead cap from a buyout might not be an option.

A buyout saves them 1.5M less over the 4 years of Vlasic's deal, and adds 4 years of cap hit, plus the cost of a replacement player makes that even less in years 1 and 2 even at league minimum the makes it about 3M less in savings over the first 4 years.

In the last 3 seasons Adin Hill, Vitek Vanacek (maybe Caps saw him as a starter over Samsonov?), Robin Lehner, and ,depending on what your opinion on Matt Murray was at the time of the trade, him as well. Now they are younger, but they all either made more or were due raises which will have them making more than Allen half retained. Add on to the fact that it has happened recently, MTL has major uncertainty in net due to Prices health and Allen is the only guy in the system who will likely be able to handle the work load if Price can't play. Mrazek isn't a guy I'd want taking the workload, even in a rebuilding year, but having him take some of it and hoping someone steps up is an acceptable option, for the right return.

Their saving 2M in years 1 and 2, while getting a LD to replace Vlasic who is actually worth his deal, and their saving 5.5M in years 3 and 4, if you don't think that's worth a 1st you might need to revisit the value of cap relief moves in recent years. If Edmundson is the issue though fine, he could easily be traded somewhere else for actual assets.

If MTL were to trade Allen with 50% retention it would likely be for a 2nd, so dumping Mrazek is the difference between the 2nd and a late 1st, I even went with the 2024 pick because it should be later than than this years.

Curious About this Trade Down Caps Fans
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OldNYIfan</b></div><div>Well, the problem is that I'm not sure everyone would agree with you that he's worth a late first. For example, I don't think that Arizona or Buffalo would be willing to pay their late firsts for him. I could be wrong.</div></div>
So because a non-playoff team wouldn't pay a certain price for a player, their value in a trade with a playoff team should be less? Weird argument but fair enough. Dvorak's value based on middle 6C being traded in the past would be late 1st early 2nd, or a similar value of roster players/prospects. Just last draft we saw pick 20 traded for 22 and 90, the extra 4 spots don't equal moving from pick 90 to around pick 30-40's value. We also saw that moving up 7 spots to 15 cost 23 48 and 138, which is also less than Dvorak plus 26 and it moved them more spots and to a more valuable pick. Maybe Dvorak and MTL 2nd (33) for WSH 1st (20) WSH 3rd (85), I don't know though, MTL would need to be pretty high on someone at 20 and be positive they wouldn't slip to 26.

Accuracy is important, and at the draft it could be the difference in the deal happening or not, but it's such a small change that editing the original seems more appropriate. The deal is inadequate from the MTL side of things, considering a mid to late 2nd would be more than enough to make a 6 spot jump late in the first round, and a good middle 6C on a decent deal is worth more than that. Caps fans take the deal and run, easily.

The difference between pick 20 in this version, and pick 21 in the old is unlikely to change any opinions about the trade.

(MTL/VGK) - Weber for Dadonov
For the people going on about how the Ducks were getting 2nd with Dadonov keep in mind that happened at the trade deadline when Vegas needed cap space or they couldn't ice a full lineup while in a playoff race. That's a different market than the offseason when teams can exceed the cap by 10%. Overall I like this for MTL, they get a slightly overpaid 20 goal guy that they should be able to flip at the TDL, and if he performs as wells as the last cap dump they got from Vegas (Tatar in the Pacioretty deal), the return might be impressive. Vegas gets immediate cap flexibility, but LTIR isn't a cure for their cap issues.

2021-22 NHL Off-season Discussion Thread - #2
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Juiceman</b></div><div>Vancouver was the team that got slapped with Luongos recapture penalty</div></div>
Pretty sure both teams did, Vancouver is just the one everyone remembers because the had a significant cap hit from the recapture, while Florida had something around league minimum. And, for context, Florida was the team being referenced because, like EDM and MTL, they were the 2nd team a recapture penalty (or, in the case of what started the talk, a recapture credit) eligible contract was playing for and therefore were a reference point to the discussion.
Edit: A quick google search tells me that VAN had just over 3M cap hit while Florida had just over 1M, both for 3 season because that was how many years remained on Luongo's deal at the time he retired.

I wonder why Keith's contract differs from this.
EDIT: yes there is a cap credit of $5M for Habs as well lol</div></div>
Luongo had no recapture credit for Florida because they were still in penalty territory with his deal. I'd assume that the recapture credit is just the recapture penalty still remaining in effect even when it goes negative.

Hold up. Cap recapture credit? Keith retiring relieves them the whole $5,5M of his cap hit is PLUS $3,4M too?
Yeah there's definitely gonna be an influx of KEITH RETIRES posts coming forth pretty soon.</div></div>
If this goes for all the contracts subject to the cap recapture penalty MTL should be talking to Weber and seeing if he would retire prior to the final year of his deal when he's only owed 1M, because if they keep him they'll have accumulated almost 18M in cap recapture credit at that time. It would likely be like the penalty and not exceed cap hit in any season, but nearly 8M of the books plus an almost 8M credit would be nice in what would be the final year of Price's deal, Wright (or however they take 1OA this draft) hopefully needing a raise, and it there would be a 2nd year at almost 8M credit and a 3rd at about 4.

Try the AZ approach
Easy no from MTL, an unprotected 1st (even from a team that shouldn't be in the lottery) for a rental LD and an RFA who is yet another LD ( MTL has a quite a few of those in the system) is already a bad idea given MTL's unlikely to make playoffs, then adding a decent 3C, 3 middle 6 wingers of varying quality, an alright 2nd pair-really good 3RD option, and depending on Price's health, possibly the goalie who will be getting the majority of the starts next season. Horrible use of assets by MTL, even if Dunn extends 8 years at a reasonable cap hit he's likely more a 2nd pairing guy and MTL has more than enough guys with that potential.
Maybe pick a couple of teams that's likely to make the playoffs and need 2nd pair LD and send Soucy and Dunn to them, even better if the team you send Dunn to is lacking in LD signed to term and a lack of decent prospects at the position.

Radical
I'd rather have 5 years of team control with Caufield and what should be a top 6C with the 1OA instead of 2 years of Nylander (who with MTL's current lineup is likely a 60 point winger not an 80 point guy) and Clarke (although a high end RD prospect is high on the shopping list). Kerfoot and likely LTIRetired Price have minimal impact on the trade value.

Yes, 2nd lottery is for 2nd (or moving up 10 spots if it's a team that can't jump to 2nd), but Columbus would have priority on the pick since they won the 1st lottery, meaning they push the 2nd overall winner to 3rd overall if they win the 1st lottery.

A sportsnet article states MTL has a 25.5% shot at 1OA, which is their 18.5% chance to win the 1st lottery, plus the odds of 12th-16th place, so I'm working off of that and assuming the 2nd lottery is for 2nd overall. Plus the tweet you shared early says that the league confirmed Columbus moving up to 2nd makes the 2nd lottery for 3rd overall at best.
