(COL/WSH) - 2nd for Eller
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JTrades</b></div><div>Washington is having a great deadline! They are getting younger and aquiring picks while only dealing UFA's</div></div>
I think that’s exactly what they’re trying to do. This is not a sell-off or the start of a rebuild. It’s making lemonade out of a lemon season.
They were kept out of the playoffs more by injuries than by lack of talent, and as long as Ovi’s still playing like the greatest goal scorer of all time, they’re going to want to try to keep their win window open. But it’s not happening this year, so it makes sense to take advantage of knowing where they stand to pick up some assets that could help in the future for guys they were probably going to lose at the end of the season anyway, rather than hanging onto them for an improbable playoff run. Then use the cap space that losing those guys creates, and maybe some of the draft picks they're acquiring now, to reload around the returning core.

Silliness. Leafs aren't over the cap right now and don't need to make any further moves. They don't need to trade Holl, the Schenn trade just made him redundant so makes sense to recoup a mid/late pick from a team that wants some extra d depth going into the playoffs

Very random signing but I think they are just rewarding him. He's stuck with the organization in some way, shape, or form, through a lot of changes. Good guy, he gets a nice payday

How can you not like this signing? Worse case scenario is they flip him. Would you have rather they didn't sign him and just let him walk? He is certainly worth this deal

A deadline like the Lighting
I think pushing for Murphy would make more sense for the Leafs in the summer - as it stands, they're a top-5 defense in the league right now, so paying deadline prices to add to a strength seems a bit excessive. But with Justin Holl's 21+ minutes a night potentially finding a new home, I could see Murphy being brought in to pick up those minutes on an affordable deal with a few years term - I'd wager that you wind up paying a slightly lower price in the summer, too.

Who won the trade 2 years later
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JTrades</b></div><div>I think it's a loss for both and here's why. When they were drafted there was a lot of hope and potential for these players. Then they started player and they both had a immediate impact once they played in the NHL. 2 solid players with different skill sets. Attitude problems/personal problems is really what led to this trade. Since then I'd say neither has really quieted things down and been able to be a force on their new team. In fairness to Laine, he has been injured and hasn't had stability from his coaches or team. I think Columbus wins at the 5 year mark</div></div>
Both teams lose if laine continues to be injury prone and Dubois leaves WPG.
If Winnipeg wins a cup and/or gets a haul back for Dubois. It probably ends up as a win win for both teams if laine can get healthy.
CBJ wins the trade by a mile if laine gets healthy and Dubois leaves for nothing if jets decide to go for it and let chips fall where they may.

Proving How Garland Fits In 23 24
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>T0R</b></div><div>Garland is terrible</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>T0R</b></div><div>He’s terrible & not what the Leafs need</div></div>
How so? Is it because this point production is down this year despite playing with bad linemates and being stuck on a miserable Canucks team? What about his years of success prior to this season? This season is a huge outlier for Garland. His offense, defense, and transitional game are all there, he has just been wasted in this Canucks system. Or is this just about his size, which means absolutely nothing. Garland is the furthest thing from a terrible player...

Pay the price for Sam Bennett
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JTrades</b></div><div>I wouldn't have thought of Toffoli as a comparison. The only thing I'd say is that Toffoli had 28 goals in 52 games the year before he was traded and Bennet also had 28 goals but in 71 games. Now Bennet is more physical than Toffoli so there is that but Toffoli has more of a track record producing in LA. Bennet has really only been at this level in Florida. I'd say it's a comparable but that Bennet has less value for the reasons stated above.</div></div>
It was tough to find a comp in general (not a ton of useful players getting traded with decent contracts, I wonder why??) but I think there's enough there to make a decent comparison. Toffoli had almost identical term left when he was traded (3x$4.25M vs. 3x$4.425M), and his 28 goal season came with a hefty 17.7% shooting percentage - I'm sure GMs took note of that spike when valuing him. I can't disagree that Toffoli's track record was stronger than Bennett's, but I do think that the fact that Bennett is younger (26 vs. Toffoli being 29 at the time of his trade) and plays center vs. Toffoli being strictly a winger brings the value closer to neutral. But again, tough to find a recent comparison for a potential Bennett trade.
