Ghost is worth a 2nd round pick 50% retained, but since the Yotes are already retaining 2 contracts and probably want to be able to retain Chychrun, they cannot retain Ghost hence just the 3rd round pick.

He's a UFA but was still expecting more

I don't really understand it for either teams.

CAR could have asked a retention atleast and ARZ could have gotten more too.

Also I don't really see where Gost will fit in CAR.

Why not 50% retained for a 1st? What was ARX thinking? Win for Carolina, but they could’ve gotten a retention.

This is the biggest one sided trade of the deadline. Bigger than the Jeannot trade. Carolina just got themselves a good 1st pairing defender for a 3rd round pick. Absolutely stunned that nobody offered more.

He'll play 3LD and will be the power play guy. Could see him going to the Hurricanes a while ago, a fantastic fit for them. Arizona should have gotten so more though

They don't need retention -- Pacioretty's not coming back so they have plenty of cap space. They don't really need Gostisbehere either. It wouldn't make sense for them to give more than a 3rd for him, and certainly not a 1st. I can't see him cracking the top 4 in Carolina unless somebody gets hurt. With what he's done in Arizona the last two seasons, it seems like he should have been worth more, but there doesn't seem to be much demand for rental defensemen this year. Other than Orlov, forwards have been getting much better returns.

I guess any comp is good comp considering Ghost was a cap dump from Philadelphia when he joined Arizona. That said, Arizona should've gotten more for Ghost such as a late 1st round pick or a 2nd and a roster player. Seriously good business for the Canes.

Arizona got a 2nd, 3rd, and 7th to hold onto a cap dump for 1.5 seasons.

Carolina is having a strong deadline IMO. In this strong seller's market, they're (so far) keeping their head cold and picking up cheap assets. If they use Ghost like MTL used Gustafsson on their final's run (aka sheltered minutes, paired with defensive partners + PP usage), he'll surely be serviceable.

Considering ARI was paid to get Ghost, the fact they turned Ghost's value into something positive is in itself a W.

Still, holy balls Canes got themselves a very serviceable D-man for so cheap.

I love this trade for the Canes, I didn't really see a point in getting a Dmen but if you're going to get one for only a 3rd then I would do it too (especially since he's going to help on the power play and offensively). Yes we don't get any retained salary but we could potentially get another forward with the 2.6 mil we have. I'd like another top forward picked up, even if it's a rental. But anyways great deal, Welcome to the Canes Ghost.

How does Carolina do this?
First, Burns with retention for nada, then Pacioretty for nothing, and now Ghost

Well, so much for my dream that John Klingberg with 50% retention ($3.5 million) is going to get a 2024 second.

Good move by DW. I've been harsh on him and I wish he had made a bigger splash, but this is a solid return for a PP Specialist. He sucks at defense, but the team as a while has solid D.

Great price for a solid rental.
