Dillon has value and Schmidt has negative value. Dillon can be traded at the deadline for futures because he only has this upcoming season left on his contract. Schmidt is a serviceable 3rd pair defenceman who’s a great team mate, and he only has two years left.
The Blackhawks have been adding veteran players in case you missed it, and the LD depth chart in particular is really weak.
Basically, it’s two respected NHL veteran defenceman for free and it fits with Chicago’s recent moves, so I didn’t think it was an outrageous trade.
In fact, my preference would be to keep Dillon and just move Schmidt with Fabian Lysell (acquired in the Bruins trade) being the added value to move Schmidt’s contract. Do you think that’s more realistic?

Include Byfield’s bonus money and he’s about a $3.5 million cap hit and Arvidsson is $4.25 million. If those are the primary pieces traded for Dubois, that’s not far from the $8.5 million AAV he likely signs at on an 8 year contract sign-and-trade to the Kings.

For all those saying Carolina would never be interested in Scheifele, I am not sure about that. Yes, Scheifele is weak defensively, but he’s coming off a 42 goal season and before that he was averaging better than a point per game for a number of seasons.
Carolina’s forwards are relentless puck possession stalwarts and all above average defensively, but as a group they are lacking goal scoring and offensive skill.
This is why a player like Scheifele makes perfect sense.
Offensively gifted to fill a Carolina need? Check.
On the last year of a contract and motivated to have his best season ever in a contract year? Check.
Plus, no matter the forwards he plays with for the Hurricanes, their strengths will compensate for the weakest part of his game AND he’s going to be the best possible version of himself regardless since he’s playing for one last big contract.
Very few (if any) hockey players are “perfect”. Imo, Carolina needs to recognize where they’re at in their competitive window, identify where they need to improve and be bold like Vegas was assuming they want to get over the hump from really good regular season team to Stanley Cup champions.

Pionk’s remaining contract (2 years @ $5.875 million AAV) is similar to Schmidt’s contract, so he’s another player that could be dealt for Parayko for the same reasons I stated Schmidt could be appealing to the Blues versus the Parayko situation.
Regarding Parayko, only he knows if he would be willing to waive his NMC to join the Jets. However, he’s Canadian (from St. Albert, Alberta) and hockey-wise, it would be a perfect fit on the top pair with Josh Morrissey (from Calgary, Alberta) who’s signed for 5 more seasons.

As I understand it, Bruins have huge cap issues going into next season. Harkins is a point producing machine in the AHL, but he’s never had a fair shot at a top 6 roll with the Jets. He is beyond NHL ready at a league minimum cap hit, so he’s exactly the kind of player the Bruins will be looking to add to stretch their cap dollars.
I see the Bruins trying to hold it all together for another season or two and remain Cup competitive until their rebuild cycle begins. For this reason, they will be about players that can help them now and not a prospect that won’t be ready until well after their window closes. Plus, as you probably know, Boston’s prospects are currently really poor, so it’s not like you’d be trading away a sure fire top pair or even middle pair defenceman.

Hurricanes need more scoring, so why not Scheifele?
Dylan is a legit 4/5 NHL D and the Blue Jackets just made two “win now” trades to improve their defence. Ceulemans projects to be a 4/5 defenceman if he gets there, as many prospects never pan out. Why does Columbus “laugh and hang up”?
What’s stopping the Kings from extending Hellebuyck for another 4 or 5 seasons? Also, the Kings are said to be “leaning hard” into a trade for Dubois with Vilardi and Byfield players in the rumours. Why wouldn’t it be a realistic trade if the Kings and Hellebuyck can agree to an extension which shouldn’t be difficult?

Leafs were rumoured to be looking to trade for Gavrikov from the Blue Jackets. Do you Leafs fans think he’s better than Dillon? My opinion is they’re pretty comparable.
To get Columbus to accept a trade, what do you think they’ll want in return?
Also, iirc, Gavrikov is a pending UFA and Dillon has one more season at $3.9 million. Not sure if that’s a pro or a con from the Leafs’ perspective. I guess it depends on next season’s projected cap situation.

As I understand it, the Leafs are looking for a defence-first LHD to play in their top 4 and I believe they’re shopping in the $4 million AAV salary range.
I picked Knies as the return for Dillon because he’s a Leafs’ prospect I remembered hearing about, but there’s likely another prospect or draft pick that would be fine if the Leafs are unwilling to move Knies in that deal.
Basically, I don’t think the Jets’ defencemen as a group fit all that well together and my moves are meant to reallocate cap space in order to better optimize the roster.
Dillon is too good imo to be considered strictly a salary dump, but I think he’d probably be a better fit on the Leafs or some other team looking for a reliable middle pair LHD that would be a fixture on their PK because the Jets don’t seem to have a RHD that is ideally suited to pair up with him.
If Heinola was a RHD, I think that might have worked, so that’s why the trade for RHD Schenn as he’s pretty much a RH version of Dillon, just older and cheaper and better suited to a 3rd pair mentorship role with Heinola.

Iirc, the ask was three 1st round type pieces for Chychrun.
Lambert and Stanley were both first round picks and Pionk is the Jet's #2 defenceman in terms of minutes played after Morrissey meaning at the very least, he'd be a top 4 defenceman for the Coyotes. Also, in order for the trade to work (and I'm assuming it's the case for pretty much any team making offers for Chychrun), money needs to go out in order for Chychrun's salary to be added to the Jets in order to remain cap compliant.
I'm assuming Lambert and Stanley would be acceptable as 2/3 of the deal. The question I guess would be how much the Coyotes value RHD Pionk. Imo, Pionk could go to the Coyotes where there's virtually zero pressure and start putting up a lot of points and playing very well in which case the Coyotes could trade Pionk in a year or two for a very nice haul if they don't decide to keep him.

Because the rumour is Pettersson is the Canucks only untouchable, I figured Pionk could replace Hughes offensive production from the D spot and Hughes could be traded for a #1a type centre to replace Horvat. Lambert is a C / RW prospect, so he slots in however he’s needed in the future for the Canucks and depending on his development. Hate to include him, but the market will be hot for Horvat, so I figured this would make the trade realistic (to me at least).
Of course, the Jets only make this trade if the trade for Chychrun is accepted by the Coyotes.
For the Chychrun trade, Dillon is included to make the salaries work and the Coyotes can flip him at the deadline for more futures. Beyond that, Stanley and Lucius were both Jets’ 1st round draft picks and the Jets would also include their 1st round pick for the upcoming summer’s draft.
If these trades were to happen, I would want the Jets to do them ASAP since they could perhaps beat silly trade bids from other teams that may happen at the deadline and they would also help the Coyotes and likely the Canucks too in regards to improving the odds they may win the draft lottery for Bedard.
Imo, these moves would put the Jets right up there with Boston, Vegas, Colorado and any other of the top teams.
I hate to give up so much future, but the Jets window is this season and the next, Chychrun has term on his existing contract and moves like this could very well convince Hellebuyck, Scheifele and even Dubois to sign new contracts to stay with the Jets if they see the team as having championship potential for the next 5 years or so.

The rest of these deals are EA trades that I guess are somewhat close in value but are just not remotely what these teams are trying to do. Schiefle to CAR is the only one that comes close but zero chance he returns Jarvis and Necas</div></div>
Bjorkstrand HAD to be moved to free up cap space for Laine’s new contract. Also, Bjorkstrand had a modified NTC limiting the teams he could be dealt to. The Pacioretty situation was Vegas being OVER the cap and needing to move a big contract out to be cap compliant.
Mantha at his cap hit, at his production and with his injury history may be considered a bad contract by some in his own right.
The Jets aren’t over the cap so they aren’t forced to give away a point a game player.
Look a little closer at Mantha’s stats and Wheeler’s stats over the past few seasons. Given where Washington is at with their aging roster, Wheeler for two seasons fits better because he plays more games and produces more offence and, with the salary retained, the AAV is essentially the same.
Furthermore, his locker room issues are all because he favours / values veterans (like himself) over young players, and that wouldn’t be an issue with Washington’s older roster.

That eliminates EDM trade. They have cap issues if their own anyway.
Fla not using Lundell to move Hornqvist.
Canes not moving Jarvis period. That is terrible for them anyway.
Crouse gets more of a return than garbage.
NYR is the only one that remotely makes some sense, sort of but not really, but the league knows he’s not signing long term anywhere but where he wants to go. So why give Laf’s career for him.</div></div>
I think Washington takes Wheeler over Mantha if the AAV is similar because Wheeler puts up more points, he’s not injury prone like Mantha is and he fits the Caps competitive window. Wheeler’s contract runs for two more seasons and that’s likely the extent of their competitive window before the rebuild starts.
See above for explanations of the other trades.

Trade 1: Arizona covers $5 million of Wheeler’s salary ($2.5 million over each of the remaining two seasons of the contract) and the get a 24 year old former 1st round pick 6’7” tall defenceman that has been one of the Jets starting 6 defencemen the last two seasons. This is exactly the sort of move Arizona makes as they further develop the player and then either trade him for a good return or he becomes a mainstay in the Coyotes’ top 4.
Trade 2: Foegele and Crouse are only a year apart in age and their points per game are extremely similar so far in their careers, and they’re both big wingers. Moreover, Foegele is signed for less than what it will likely take to get Crouse signed to a new contract. The Coyotes get a 3rd round pick for taking Hornqvist too, but Hornqvist is in the final year of his contract so he can be flipped for futures at the trade deadline, so again, exactly the smart sort of trade the Coyotes have been doing during their rebuild.
Also, they have loads of cap space available, so this allows them to “trade” cap space for young assets and assets that can be flipped for more futures.

Heinola projects as a top 4 defenceman at minimum with a likely ceiling as a #2 defenceman on a top pair.
Together, it’s fair value for Lundell and Hornqvist has negative value as he’s just a salary dump in the trade.

Rangers would have Dubois for only $3 million this season. He had good success with Panarin very early in his career, so no doubt they’ll be even better together now.
Trochek can play wing and Dubois can as well.
Dubois is a RFA again after this season.
I think Dubois and the Rangers will be very good together and he may end up signing a long term deal there but, even if he doesn’t, two years of Dubois may be enough for at least one Cup.
For these reasons, this trade may be something that the Rangers could be interested in doing.
