No Tavares? No Problem!
I like Riley Nash a lot as someone I think the habs should target this offseason, but 3-3.5M per sounds a lot better than 4.5 M per.

Trade Down
Pacioretty for RNH shouldn’t have either side adding too much <strong>If</strong> Pacioretty agreed to an extension prior to the deal. Yes hes 30 years old but he is a perennial 30 goal scorer who is also very responsible in his own end. Edmonton has their 1-2 punch at centre for the next while so Pacioretty brings a ton more value to that team than RNH. Mcdavid needs legit wingers who can assist in scoring (you guys had one in hall but we know how that went)

Kadri or one of marner/Nylander will most likely need to be moved before the following season when Matthews/marner get paid as well as the raise for Kapanen.

Trade with Anaheim
Riley Nash will cost more than that on the open market. I just don’t see how the leafs can sign Tavares and make the cap work the following year. Matthews/marner will account for roughly 17M per year together most likely, plus Kapanen will be due a raise on his 800k with only gardiner’s 4M off the books

REBUILT 2 or 3 years
I don’t think dropping down from 3rd overall would be wise for Jonas Brodin. He’s a decent player but I think capped as a 2nd pair guy. Taking one of the elite wingers (zadina or svechnikov) is the best bet at 3rd unless we’re offered a number 1 Centre or top pair dman in a potential trade that moves the 3rd pick (Dumba if staying from Minnesota)

Discussion: Is this years No1 overall pick the most valuable asset in the NHL
I wouldn’t put him as the most valuable asset just yet. He still hasn’t stepped ice on an NHL rink, by no means do I think he will bust, but players of the caliber and value of Mcdavid, eichel, etc. are of more value for now.

What would you guys be looking for? I included 2 top 9 wingers (Hudon, Shaw) as well as Lindgren who is better than any goalie buffalo has ATM, as well as a good wing prospect in scherbak, plus the early 2nd.

Carlson and Staal
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Leafer67</b></div><div>Because Dundon is looking to clear cap space, plus make room for Necas. Staal wants out of there. Carolina can either resign Gardiner or trade at the deadline. Think about it this way, when you are retooling, on the open market which one is more likely to get you a 1st round pick - Gardinaer or Staal? For sure the puck moving 50+pt Dman. As far as Carlson, no idea where he wants to sign. Which contender has more than $7M in cap space for him? I think Toronto is as likely as anywhere.</div></div>
I disageee with this comment. Take a look at what Paul Stastny fetched at the deadline, and Jordan staal is better than him.
While mike green wasn’t even able to be traded (yes there was the injury but he was the point getting puck mover available this deadline). Jordan staal is a top 6 centre that would be extremely coveted around the league come deadline time if the canes wish to move on from him.

Also, there will be no problem with doughty resigning in Toronto, and can even make that a condition before the trade is completed.

Montreal is probably adding in a patches/ROR swap. As a habs fan I know a top 6 Center is much harder to come across than a top 6 winger.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Caco</b></div><div>We could pay another 0.5 mil more each (Nash and JVR). There is sufficient cap space with the salary cap raise. Just think teams will stop being silly throwing money at UFA considering some recent winger UFA busts in Okposo, Moulson, Ericsson, Lucic, etc, etc.</div></div>
For sure, I just think with a couple teams around the league seriously lacking Center depth (my Canadiens at the forefront) a top 9 centre like Riley Nash will get offers of at least over 3 million per year, and if only a 2 year deal closer to 4 million. (.5 ppg and can play up or down a teams lineup - filled in on the Pasternak and Marchand line during leafs series and fit right in with top guys)

Bergevin hangs up the phone. Well actually who knows, maybe there’s a better “attitude” player at 10 who wouldn’t make sense to choose at 3.

day 1
If habs do get an additional 1st through trades, I’d put my money on them making the pick. Bergevin has used multiple 2nd round picks as ammunition for trades in the past (Shaw) so I could see at least 1 of those 2nds being packaged with a winger (we have too many on the roster) to bolster either the centre or LD position. Good work with the sabres trade, gives them a responsible 30 goal scorer to play with eichel and the habs a top 6 Centre we’ve been lacking for what seems forever.

This would greatly bolster the habs quickly, but I don’t see this as realistic value unfortunately. Parayko alone is worth probably Petry, Reilly and a 2nd (at minimum) meaning we would be getting allen, Thomas, Dunn, fabbri and a 1st for price. If he doesn’t have the 10M contract kicking in perhaps this can happen but that’s a lot of pieces for an elite goaltender who won’t be elite for his whole contract already signed.

Making a fast team
Pacioretty trade is pretty fair. If habs retain 1.5-2M on alzner he isn’t all that bad (cheaper than jack Johnson at 3.5M which you sign) so I don’t think we need to give up picks as well as retain on an alzner deal. Him and Juulsen played relatively well together at the end of the year. Of course 4.6M on the 3rd pair isn’t ideal, but the habs aren’t in a cap crunch and he plays well for bottom pair so just keep him there. Pick up a top 4 LHD (which you did in brodie) and just keep that the 3rd pair and Weber, Petry, mete, brodie(or someonelse) top 4.

MTL trade
5 stars for some realistic trades and value. A lot of habs fans might think galchenyuk carries a ton more value, but unfortunately after his 30 goal season his usage has been way off on the team, resulting in less of a return coming back if traded. I personally am a galchenyuk fan, but I think he may be a casualty of bergevin’s “attitude” sell off this offseason.
