On the open market this summer he's still a $7M+ forward.</div></div>
But after another season...at his age...and assuming more decline...that's not something you commit 3yrs to at $5m. At least I don't.

It sucks to tank but I love it
I honestly don't think I would trade any of those pieces individually for a package of Dumba and Allen.
I'd rather have Samsonov over Allen at this point
I'd rather keep a 1st over either Dumba and Allen
I'd rather keep Niemela over either Dumba and Allen
I get that there's value in adding a guy like Dumba at that cap hit....but this ACGM suggests you haven't been watching Samsonov or Dumba play much recently

So...it's a weak draft...and a late first shouldn't be take as similar value to, say, a late first last year.
Do I want to give up a first for Tanev? No. But I can see it happening. This package is too rich...but maybe Tanev + some depth piece.
Or something like a 1st + 4th + ahl player for Tanev + 3rd
Hopefully treliving has a solid understanding of what Tanev wants on an extension...if that's not something he wants to commit to, I don't think he should give up a first for a rental.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>fangm</b></div><div>LOL at how badly this has aged.
Looking more like:
Auston Matthews - 13.25m x 4
William Nylander - 11.5m x 8
Marner - 13m x 8
JT - 5m x 3</div></div>
I am hoping they just go year to year with JT. He's trending closer to 3rd line winger at this point and I wouldn't give him $5m...but who knows.

Rant: What's the obsession with guys like Mario Ferraro, Pat Maroon, and Adam Larsson?
To start...I think this site and the fans it attracts are those who are looking to be fantasy GMs and try and improve their teams.
For the Leafs...we are in win now mode...so clearly looking to add talent vs sell for futures.
When looking for realistic trade partners...it's natural to look at teams outside the playoff picture who might be looking to move pieces who are 1-2yrs away from free agency that might not be a part of their future.
Add to that, most leaf fans feel like it's our D and toughness that have been shortcomings in past playoff appearances.
So that's why those specific names are popping up..simply because they meet the criteria of the above.
Does that make them additions that will improve the team or be worth the cost to acquire? No. But to me it's a simple explanation as to why you're seeing those names.
For me, I tend to agree on Ferraro. I think he could be a good add but, with limited assets and cap space to use, he's not the guy I'd take a risk on unless he comes quite cheap
Larsson I will tend to disagree with you on. Again, depends on the cost to acquire him, but Rielly has always seemed to take his game to a higher level when he has a simple, defensive D paired with him. Larsson would bring that steady presence and has been a top 2-4 d-man pretty much his entire career....and again, he meets the criteria noted above
Pat Maroon and Bogosian? I mean, if you're picking them up for 5-6th round picks with the idea that they'll sit in the pressbox and be insurance against injury...sure...maybe...if you'd rather have vets like that available to fill in instead of using the youth that we have been so far....but neither are guys I would think makes this team better or should take playing time away from anyone already on the roster.
Everything is subjective until we can see it in practice.

Is this team for real
I think they look real enough that they're a hot goalie away from going on a run.
I don't think they look real enough to go "all in". I think they can set themselves up nicely by not giving away key futures this year and using the available cap space over the next two off seasons to make the D more robust, have a deeper and more solidified bottom 6, and letting young guys in the system like Cowan, Niemela, Minten to develop and crack the lineup over the next few seasons on entry level deals.

End of this window, start of the next.
I think we still have about a 5yr window which is when all our main guys will be in their early 30s (with Rielly being 34-35).
But this all depends on continuing to compete at the same or higher level. If they find themselves as a wilcard or outside the playoffs over 1-2yrs maybe they change the philosophy.
For the sake of the argument...maybe a new window begins after next season when, between the rising cap and Tavrares' $11m coming off, they can reshape around the core...but it all seems to be around the same timeframe so long as Matthews-Marner-Nylander-Rielly are leading the way and production doesn't take some unexpected fall off a cliff

- JT can't lose his cool, the game swung into AZ's favour when that happened, McMann is perfect for that
- Lilly needs to be playing top 4 minutes, he's too good</div></div>
JT, I feel, has looked better in a reduced role. I just don't think he was able to keep up with Bill and I think having somewhat sheltered minutes has been beneficial.
Brodie looks a lot better. Not sure if it's from playing the left side or what...but he's close to being back to last year's type of output so hopefully that keeps up.
Lilly has been very impressive. Has had some shifts where he's playing like a man possessed and seems to be picking his spots better as far as when to pinch.
Woll is on a conditioning stint. If he can come back and share quality starts with Sammy we may finally get some consistent results down the stretch.
and I guess better late than never...but gotta give at least some kudos to Chief Keefe for mixing the lines a bit...hopefully they don't let their foot off the gas with Morgan returning.
tough schedule coming up so should be fun to see how they rise to the challenge.

Just because he hasn't done it yet, doesn't mean he won't cave. Like most GM's, Tre goes with the TDL philosophy of letting his team's play on the ice dictate any potential moves. But we need to stop the cycle of giving up firsts for rentals. I don't buy into the "going for it" strategy just because Matthews is putting up a monster season. Too many holes to plug with not enough resources.
See what we can add with term or an extension, yes...but the heavy lifting should be done in the offseason.
You're initial wish-list item...Adam Larsson...would still be a smart add for me

Tre has been looking to add D since he got here
Other teams are asking for a 1st which he doesn't want to give up
Seems like he's been willing to give up the 1st if he can get a package of 2 players
No takers
So...all the "insider" reports linking the leafs to all these players is most likely Tre just burning up the phone lines trying to see how far he can stretch a dollar.
I also doubt he moves Brodie...just based on his NMC, dad dying before the season started...sick wife... I get it's a cap value that allows bigger moves but I just don't think he asks him to waive his NMC.

I think we need to mentally part ways with the first rounder. Tre has been looking for D since he got here and I don't think he can get anything of worth done without moving it.
Can easily connect the dots to see that he's tried to get 2 pieces with the 1st rounder but obviously nothing has materialized yet.
Sounds like this draft isn't particularly deep so maybe that's also a ding on how other GM's value a late pick in the first round.
I think we end up using it on Tanev....not advocating for that to happen...just where I think we end up

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>Just to add to the Liljegren comments. I wouldn't trade him for Tanev. He made good plays on the Leafs 3rd and 4th goals last night. I've been kinda dismayed why so many Leaf fans are so love Calgary Dmen. There is defensive record isn't much better than the Leafs, and IMO it was Leafs poor goaltending for a stretch attributed to goals allowed.
Maybe it's kinda of a blessing Reilly has will be out five games. Gives Lagaesson ice time. Any chance of a long playoff run, you probably need eight Dmen due to injuries. Too bad Timmins has mono, he needs game time too,</div></div>
I think it was just the nature of Calgary being a team that, in the past few seasons, has been hard to play against, but now they're a couple seasons removed from contending and have/had 3 guys on deals as pending UFA's. Probably just natural to look at teams who are likely to be sellers and have quality pieces coming up on free agency.
As for Liljegren....I agree, he had a pretty good game last night. For the record, I'm not advocating he should be traded...was moreso interested in the discussion as to if we still think he's showing hints of being capable of taking another step anytime soon...because, if he's just going to max out as a bottom 4 guy, could make sense to move him for assets or someone with more consistency as you can add bottom pairing d-men relatively cheaply moving forward.

There's no chance I'd trade Liljegren for Tanev straight up, there is way too much upside with Liljegren in addition to his already solid play and far too much risk with Tanev</div></div>
That's exactly the question...especially when paired with what Liljegren is looking for on his next deal (and what a tanev extension would come in at). Is the possibility of finally adding someone as a 1RD for a couple years worth giving up on a young player who could one day get there

Would Calgary?
I've been a Liljegren supporter since he's been drafted but I'm just not seeing him take that step. For me, it would depend on how extension talks have gone...but he's not someone that has earned $3m+ to me...maybe worth the risk if that's a long term deal...but I've just been seeing a lot of mental errors recently.
From calgary's end...they obviously get a younger guy that can step right into the lineup with control vs a typical draft pick.

Guy just hires name recognition and has no real idea where he's going. Keeping the core is wise but you need a coach who can get a full team rolling. Keefe just plays his stars into the ground and runs out of steam in the playoffs. Every year it's the same thing.</div></div>
I largely agree...but I think it's a combo of poor coaching and lack of depth. And it makes us way too easy to defend against in the playoffs. Would love an offseason where we re-shape this D-core and bring in a new coach that can put a better system in place (i'm still wishing upon a star for Brind'Amour)

Its a lose/lose situation
<strong>If Rielly did nothing people would say team has no spark or heart.</strong> He does something oh no need for that. So what we want people. Yes should have aimed lower but what can you do
No team would have allowed Greig to get away with what he did and he would have been lying on the ice anyway
Greig is lucky this was not BOS, FLA, or any of the other more vicious teams as they would have sent him to the ER as if u dont think Marchand or Bennett wouldnt take a suspension to make a point oh boy.
Anyways Greig learned a valuable lesson and knows if he does that again there gonna be a response from other teams.</div></div>
I really don't think, of all the crap the leafs showed Saturday night....that anyone would pay attention to a lack of reaction to the empty net slap shot.
