<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Heiskanen4Vezina</b></div><div>Why are we signing guys like Fast, Vesey, Hutton, and Merrill to depth positions when we have guys like Dellandrea, Robertson, Caamano, Kiviranta, Gardner, Bayreuther, Heatherington, and Harley that can all fill those depth spots for a far cheaper cost and have similar production. Dallas has been one of the worst teams in the league when it comes to signing pointless veterans instead of actually bringing up the NHL-ready prospects they have.

Bayreuther &amp; Heatherington could have been up last season, but Nill goes out and signs the pylon Polak and his sidekick Sekera. There is no chance that Bayreuther or Heatherington are worse than either of those two. In terms of forwards, we finally have prospects that are NHL ready, and you want to further bury them on the depth chart for another year while we wait for these depth veterans contracts to expire?

Sorry man, but there's really no need for Dallas to sign depth veterans, especially in the quantity that you have listed here. If guys like Dellandrea &amp; Harley aren't quite ready, there are players like L'Esperance and the aforementioned Bayreuther/Heatherington that easily fill a role until those two are ready.</div></div>

I appreciate the comments!

I agree that Dallas has a good group in the pipeline, but there’s a couple reasons why I took the approach I did.

First, depth is important. Despite signing a few free agents to supplement, I also walked away from several. Many of the prospects you mentioned would still get games this season, but it’s a process becoming a pro. Blending the roster with vets and kids is essential, and doing such where roles and responsibilities all fit across the 30+ players that’ll potentially be used across an 82 gm season is a tough balance to achieve.

Having said that, I also don’t disagree there have been mistakes in the process. I too thought Bayreuther and Heatherington deserved longer looks, but nobody thought they fully grabbed the opportunities. Polak was solid in yr1, but agreed he’s not lived up this season. I personally really like Sekera. Regardless, our current D prospects need more time before giving big roles right away. Similar with fwds, although I envision Caamano and Robertson will be two that do see bigger roles next season.

Also keep in mind the players added are assets, so when young guys knock down the door, we can always move players to open up space in the form of future assets to protect the long term as well.

Thanks again for the hockey debate, much needed
