Doesn’t Montreal gain back one of the retention slots once the season is over?

The whole Kotkaniemi offer sheet situation has worked out poorly for everyone involved. Carolina got a bust in Kotkaniemi and Montreal tried to compensate by getting Dvorak (which I mistakenly thought at the time was not a bad acquisition) and he turned into a bust as well. Looks like Arizona might be the only team coming out of it with a decent return.

"4th line center" Kotkaniemi???
I had a brief back and forth with some Hurricanes fans that believe Kotkaniemi is a "play driver" and although his offensive numbers are low, he gets a lot of "tertiary assists" that do not show up on the score sheet ...........
You cannot just find a center who averages 0.35 points per game just anywhere y'know!

#29 to #32 are interesting comparisons......not too often a team would be able to draft 4 likely future Hall of Fame players at the end of the draft.

ALLEN TO PHILLY PLUS OFFSEASON ZEGRAS TRADE
I think the general consensus is that the 2025 draft is supposed to be a bit deeper than this year's draft, so I would not want Montreal trading their first round pick next year (and the Wiinipeg pick this year as well) to get #11 in this year's draft. There is a decent chance that Montreal's 2025 pick position is better than #11, so the trade could backfire on Montreal (trading a potential top 10 pick in a deeper draft in 2025 for a #11 pick in this year's draft).
I know Montreal should be better next year, but there is no guarantee (see Ottawa and Buffalo expectations for this year compared to what actually happened).
I also think Montreal might be able to get more for Savard.

Draft day dream
As you said, trading the first overall pick is extremely rare. I doubt Chicago’s does it.
I would not be 100% sure Montreal does this trade either. If they had #4 there is a pretty good chance that Demidov or Lindstrom would be available (as Levshunov is likely a top 3 pick) and I am curious as to whether they think the difference between either of them and Celebrini is still Roy + Struble + Winnipeg’s first. It’s an interesting question though.

I don’t think Lundell has shown enough to get a top10 pick back in return
IF the Habs were somehow willing to do it,
I think FLA would have to add in their 1st (at least)
It would still seem unlikely imo though
I definitely don’t think the Sabres would do anything like this though- we are already deep at forward, so no interest</div></div>
Cool. Thanks for your opinion

For example, if we didn’t have Cozens or Mitts, then the value is better
But bc we are deep at forward, it just doesn’t work for us
It might make sense for MTL,
but i think u guys would at least have to send them your 1st as well
And they’d obviously have to be VERY high on Lundell
Bc he hasn’t shown enough at the NHL level to get a top10 pick</div></div>
Are you saying that Montreal should give up their own 2024 first round pick for Lundell or no (I am not certain because you said Montreal would have to send them their first as well and then you later said Lundell has not shown enough at the NHL level to get a top 10 pick).

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Andy_Dick</b></div><div>Both of you, are wrong.
Lundell wasn't even a top10 pick. He doesnt have the upside to warrant that price, of course and the Cats will be under a cap crunch BUT they wont give him away.
You're talking about a mid 1st like the 2025 Calgary pick and a prospect like Owen Beck whom could be a Lundell.
The already established NHL'r usually goes for a prototype of the same caliber of player and a pick to weigh the risk of the prospect not working out.</div></div>
I am not sure I would even do Beck + the Calgary pick (if it lands in the middle of the first round), but that is a heck of a lot closer than a top 10 pick in the draft and a "top prospect" for Lundell that was suggested.

I agree there. The post was more about discussing the value of the trade rather than than the fit on the Sabres roster. I think Buffalo has so many good young forwards that they should not be trading (or drafting) for more.

A top 10 pick and a top prospect for a guy on pace for under 40 points???
If you think the original post is an undervaluation that’s fine, but Montreal. Is not giving up a top 10 pick and a top prospect for a guy who looks like he is best suited as a 3C.

I could trade you a guy that never had any major injuries and he gets a season-ending injury his first game with you. Injuries are part of the game so that's largely irrelevant when assessing value. You pay for the player and what they bring on the ice. For that reason - plus his age and RFA status - Byram has a lot of value.</div></div>
I do like him, and I agree he has value, but the multiple concussions cannot be totally overlooked.
He will likely stay in Colorado for a long time anyway.

Mtl 24-24
I question where Lundell fits once Montreal turns the corner. I see him as a very good 3C but just an OK 2C, and I see Dach as filling that role. Hopefully the Habs’ 2024 first round pick will play on that 2nd line with Dach too. Newhook or Mesar could go on that line too hopefully.
If he is a 3C down the road, how much should Montreal really give up for him, especially with Owen Beck joining the team in the next few years?

I really like Byram, but it seems like a slight overpay, especially since he seems to come with some injury concerns (of course us Habs fans tried to try to convince other fans that Monahan’s injuries were a thing of the past too).
I think Montreal should get a bit more in the Oilers trade.

I think it will cost a lot more than that to get Leon to play in Montreal. I think many teams in better competitive situations would offer more than $12M annually.
Montreal may have to go to $15M to get him to sign, with the cap going up and the tax situation there.
Would love to see him there though.

I said this the other day in a separate post: if you want to get really ambitious you could use the remaining draft picks (i.e. Winnipeg's 2024 and Montreal's 205 + Calgary's 2025 pick + whatever else) to try to unload the Anderson and Gallagher contracts and then go for a huge overpay to try to sign Draisaitl in free agency (if he makes it to free agency). I know it would take a big overpay to get Draisaitl to Montreal, but if they put him on a line with Dach and Celebrini that would be amazing.

It is more or a question of getting people's opinions on prospect valuation and where Montreal stands in their rebuild (i.e. how patient people might be for another stinker of a year).
Personally, I would go with Celebrini over Hagens in an "either/or situation", as it would slightly speed up the rebuild and I am just a little concerned about Hagens only being 5'9" (but would obviously be happy with Montreal getting either or both).

That is true. My mistake.
My question to you is: If you had to choose between the options of MC in 2024 vs getting JH in 2025, what would you rather have happen, Celebrini this year or Hagens next year (which would mean another year near the bottom for Montreal)?
And why?

I hope Montreal would draft a forward like Catton or Helenius over another left handed defenceman. I know Dickinson is a very good prospect, but he would have to be fit in with Guhle and Hutson, I think Montreal is hoping that Guhle and Hutson are top 2 pairing guys on the left side.

It does appear that the "Zegras is on the trade market" may have taken on a life of its own with very little (if any) basis for it. It appears that multiple Ducks fans say that he is not on the market, which would make sense, given his value is the lowest it has been in the past few years. I really cannot see Anaheim trading him right now.

Big package for zegras
If I was the GM of the Habs I would only want to trade their 2024 first round pick for Zegras if they don't win the draft lottery (Celebrini) and if Demidov, Lindstrom, Eiserman and Catton are already gone when it is Montreal's turn to pick. I think Zegras is quite talented, but I honestly would prefer to go with one of those guys and develop them in the system over taking Zegras right now. That could blow up in my face, but that is just how I value Zegras.
