I really like Byram, but it seems like a slight overpay, especially since he seems to come with some injury concerns (of course us Habs fans tried to try to convince other fans that Monahan’s injuries were a thing of the past too).

I think Montreal should get a bit more in the Oilers trade.

Colorado's biggest need is a young 2C, preferably with term, that's not answered in that trade and they won't make a trade with Byram involved unless that need is answered.

I would want more then that to even take Campbells contract, adding Savard to that makes no sense.

Not getting that for Allen, even retained. That time has passed about 45 days ago.

COL just doesn’t have a use for Matheson. He wouldn’t get PP time and wouldn’t be used on the top pairing. Basically, he’d be cast in the same role as Byram: a solid player that probably needs more ice time.

The only difference is that Matheson is older, more established, and more expensive. The end result here is that you have one of Girard, Manson, or Matheson on your third pairing. Each of those guys makes $4.5-$5M. That’s too much to commit to long term.

I’m a Barron stan, but he doesn’t fit in Colorado. The Avs tend to use their bottom pair for a PK vet (like Jack or Erik Johnson). Barron is not that.

I don’t know if the value is off necessarily, it just doesn’t address Colorado’s needs: a 2C.

There will always be "injury concerns" with almost any player. I could trade you a guy that never had any major injuries and he gets a season-ending injury his first game with you. Injuries are part of the game so that's largely irrelevant when assessing value. You pay for the player and what they bring on the ice. For that reason - plus his age and RFA status - Byram has a lot of value.

Who is this player that will answer all the Avs needs and fit in their cap structure moving forward that is worth Byram? I have yet to find that guy. Also, that would mean Byram would need to be replaced and the Avs would still probably need to trade Manson to create more space so, they're up one 2C but down two top-five D.

I do like him, and I agree he has value, but the multiple concussions cannot be totally overlooked.

He will likely stay in Colorado for a long time anyway.

They can't be overlooked in terms of the risk of taking on the player but they also can't factor into the value of the player in a trade. When you want the player, you assume the associated risks. But, like you say, he likely with be in Colorado for a good long while so it's probably moot for the purposes of trade discussions.

COL doesn’t need Matheson at all, they already traded Barron, and what does a late 1st do for them? They need a legit 2c with term for Byram something MTL doesn’t have.

I’m confused why the Wild considers this. If they trade Fleury, it’s because they’re giving up on the season and if that’s the case, why drop back a round in the draft for a goalie they won’t need?
